I've always had a sensitive spot for Father Son relationships. As Vin explained his thoughts the lyrics I found myself tearing up and thinking about all the things I've learned from my father and the role it had in shaping me into the man I am today. I'm no father but can still appreciate the hardships that Fathers encounter in raising their children. I'm also very aware of the mother's role as a parent and I'm not trying to undermine it. ^_^ anyways total classic. keep up the great work and wish nothing but the best for you and this channel. Yes! to "Dust in the Wind."

Then there's "Cat's in the Cradle" for another angle on the father-son relationship... I'd love to hear Vin's thoughts on it as a father, even if the song is bittersweet

This song is about a spiritual awakening, the writer was going through a conversion to christianity when he was writing this record. Its not a coversation between a father and son, its a conversation with God

Kansas appeared at San Diego Comic-con to play Carry on Wayward Son live for thousands of Supernatural fans. It was an epic moment!

The reason so many older bands appear to have “more” talent is that there wasn’t technology to cover their warts. They had to sing it well, which requires practice and cutting your teeth for years. Bands don’t often come up the same way and digital recording/sampling does a lot of work for the artist that they just don’t have to perfect their craft as much. And don’t take this as an “old snob” attitude. There are real talents out there now that come up the same way, but it’s becoming rarer and rarer. Back in the day you cut your teeth and with so few mediums to get music to you, that limit allowed a lot of cream to rise to the top. Now anybody with a computer can make an album, no matter if it’s good or not. This obviously liberates artists who are no longer controlled by labels, but it also saturates the music industry with loads of garbage.
@thegorn68
@thegorn68 5 лет назад
Exactly. Also, IMAGE was less of a factor because there was no MTV and music videos weren't essential to success. That's what killed a talented artist like Christopher Cross. He had early success and not many people cared he was a boring, chubby looking white dude. Once image became more important, artists like him didn't translate.

A time in music where multiple sections of a song were crafted and switched around THEN they practiced the hell out of it. They crafted pieces, then organized the song. So we are talking a ton of practice to get the songs to come on this way in studio AND live.

Vin, back then the pool was smaller and the best of the best knew each other through a network akin to 7 degrees of separation. The musicianship had to be spot on back then. Just saw this for the first time. Even though this was 3 years ago, I completely relate to your story about telling your then 13 yr old son you love him after a conflict. I heard that same voice you heard. It told me to tell my dad I loved him. Those were my and my dad's last words to each other one evening, after a conflict we had earlier that day. He died unexpectedly the next day. He was 34, I was 13. That night has stayed with me my entire life. I am now 62. Keep telling your son you love him and following God's lead. God bless you.

The answer for how they 've played so well those days without all that technological stuff is exactly that...They were forced by this lack of technology to be great musicians . Now they're good technicians not musicians.

My older brother had gone to Vietnam and came home unharmed at least physically. I remember him telling my father that America had sent him over there and when he came home America was ashamed of him. This song wasn't written about Vietnam veterans but if you listen to the words it does kind of fit them. My brother had this LP and he'd listen to this song over and over again. It was kind of theurapetic at a time when there wasn't anything for the vets to help them. Thanks for playing this.

Vin, the songwriter for this song, Kerry Livgren, became a Christian around 1979 (this song came out in 1976). Then bassist Dave Hope became a Christian, and when he (Hope) left the band he never came back to rock n' roll. I think he's a pastor now.

Kerry has a lot of Solo albums plus two other bands. AD which is a Christian band similar to Kansas but with a sax instead of violin. His last band is Porto-Kaw for 2004 -2008. They are a progressive rock/ Jazz fusion band. They have 4 albums. The band is made up of ex-Kansas members from 1971-1973 lineups. Amazing music. Kerry had a massive life threatening stroke in 2009. He has since recovered and has appeared on stage with the current Kansas once but he’s retired. He’s appeared off and on with Kansas since the mid-90s whenever they appear where he is.

Gotta love that Hammond Organ. In 1977 I was 17 when this came out and if I was out riding around in my 1968 Firebird with the windows rolled down, and this came on the radio, I would blast it. The 70s produced the best musicians because we didn't have Xbox. If you were 22 and in your parents' basement, you were probably a musician, constantly practicing and getting better. Then, instead of plugging into steam games on a Friday night, you were out playing gigs and getting noticed by talent scouts.

The biggest difference between then and now is the attention span of people. Back then people would really dedicate themselves to a "craft" and become exceptional through very hard work. As technology has evolved the attention span of people has greatly changed. There are still people who become exceptional at a certain thing, but there are so many distractions that it's likely there are many fewer. There will always be those who are just born with virtuoso-type talent, but those who are on the border-line are less likely to put in the work to achieve this level of talent.

So both Dust In The Wind and Wayward Son were game changers for Kansas. The songwriter for Kansas wrote the latter the *night before* they finished that album, and that album basically made their careers. Then he (yup, same guy wrote both songs) said he was in his practice area in his kitchen doing a guitar drill he'd made up to practice finger picking. His wife walks by and says, "You need to do something with that." He tells her, "Ah, its just a practice drill, stop bothering me." Then he wife stops, and says, " *No,* I'm serious, you need to *do* something with what you have there." So, taking his wife's advise he started putting words to it and it became Dust In The Wind. He actually didn't think his bandmates would like it because it was so different from their usual stuff. He recorded it on a tape and played it for them, just his voice and guitar. When it stopped, everyone was speechless and their drummer said, "Where has *_this_* been?" He had doubts but the others in the group believed that the song was something really special.

I have a hard time explaining to my kids ‘I’m 50 ‘ that this was a chart topping pop song in the 70’s and more or less prog rock , interestingly this era of music mid 70’s had some of the most ambitious music on the rock era , Queen -Rush-Led Zeppelin- Styx-Etc all had big multi dimensional songs that were big hits , something about that era

I grew up with Kansas! Graduated Highschool in 1977 (yea. I'm almost 60) Leftoverture put them on the map (so to speak) with Carry On My Wayward Son being the catalyst. Their follow up album Point Of Know Return gave them their biggest commercial hit Dust In The Wind. Their lyrics have always been pretty thought provoking and clever (Point of Know Return). From the above mentioned albums I recommend The Wall, Nobody's Home, Closet Chronicles and of course Dust In The Wind is a must

Kansas is my all time favorite band. Their lyrics are so amazing, touches you so deep...its like all of their songs tell your story. This song, even how great it is, for me, is not their best song, not even close, neither is Dust In the Wind. Kansas haves so many, so mind blowing songs, they are so good, the most underrated band in the world. They were the best live band ever, if you don't believe, believe one Freddy Mercury. In the 70's Kansas had the chance to tour with the Queen (and with the Aerosmith), now obviously Kansas went first. After one show, Freddy Mercury said to Brian May, this is the greatest live band i ever heard or seen, how they perform,...they are so tight, their sound is so amazing. - Steven Tyler of the Aerosmith did not agree, he was so jealous of the multiple encore request's and got super pissed, but that's a story for another time :) . Songs i recommend you should listen. From the self titled album: Kansas (1974 - all of the songs were actually recorded in 1973) - Can I Tell You - Lonely Wind - Belexes - Journey From Mariabronn - Apercu - Death Of Mother Nature Suit From the album: Songs For America (1974) - Down The Road - Songs For America - Lamplight Symphony - The Devil Game - Incomudro - Hymn To The At Man From the album: Masque (1975) - Icarus - Born On The Wings Of Steel - All The World - Child Of Innocence - Mysteries And Mayhem - The Pinnacle (the last song is really a one song, but it was forced as two by their record label From the album: Leftoverture (1976) | already listened that Wayward Son song - every single song, they are all masterpieces From the album: Point Of No Return (1977) - every single song Other songs: Glimpse Of Home and Hold On are good ones
