These rituals(daiva kola) are followed and believed very strongly in coastal Karnataka. Specially in Mangalore Udupi & Kasaragod. It's not a dance form. Every village or some home has its own daiva(demigod) who protects the village or people who believe in. There are many demigods like Avatar of lord Vishnu, lord shiva, Parvati and so on. Vishnu avatar is varaha which you can see in movie but in climax the spirit comes in rishab body is not varaha it's named Guliga (lord Shiva avatar). He is kshetrapal of that village. In movie Varaha demigod says to king in the beginning if you ask your land back in future then it's possible I may forgive you but my kshetrapal (Guliga) won't spare you. That is the climax. And one more important information is whoever performs these ritual (daiva kola) for moment of time the demigods enters their body and guide or give thr words to Villagers or people who believe in demigods. Most of the issues which cannot be solved by humans like doctors, health issue, disease, financial issues etc. Etc..then people come to daiva(demigod) and if they pray truly with all thr hearts then the issues will be solved mysteriously.

Happen to be in Bangalore last week - from the moment I was there, I could here everyone talking about Kantara, out of curiosity I booked to watch it. I had to scramble to find a seat. The first few minutes set up a simple yet powerful storyline. Therein a beautifully scripted series of scenes set up for a thrilling climax. The last 40 mins immersed me into the world of the Udipi and Mangalore tribals. I was lucky enough to watch it with the same beliefs and they chanted dialogues during the Daiva Bhoota scenes which created an electrifying atmosphere!!! All actors have done really well to give the movie life while the music and cinematography are top notch!! Kantara - Cennāgide!!!

Varaha roopam means the form of a boar. Varaha - Boar /Pig Roopam - form or shape. Daiva - Demi god Varishtham meaning lord/senior (of demigods) This song is in Sanskrit and kannada describing and praising Panjurli Daiva You should search for panjurli history you will know the story behind the roopam And it's not Khantara It's Kaan taara meaning mysterious forest The yellow coloured costume of daiva is Panjurli and in the climax it is Guliga (he is the kshetrapala). Please read the history behind the culture. You will definitely feel the divine presence of Daiva in this movie.

Since caste angle was bought in by you when you said every caste has different ritual, the most interesting thing about Bhootakola is the one who dons the role of Bhoota is from the so called lowest caste in that region and he is placed on the highest pedestal when they do the kola. It is not different for different castes and Bhoota kola common for all castes in a particular region and the above rule of person donning the role also applies across the regions.

Hi, thanks for your reviews and interests on the different cultures, this boota kola is is one of the essential part of our life here and there are not one or two daivas, 1000 s of daivas u can get, if you study the TULUNADA DAIVOLU, from google, or Wikipedia. This varaha roopam as we know, the avthaar of vishnu, but here it is the different cocept, like all these daivas and rituals strongly related with the nature and the agricultural land. This is the very vast and reviewable aspect,. Lord shiva is the supreme for all these daivas. Bhootha Aradhane or devil worship is very common in the coastal towns of Karnataka. Idols representing ‘bhoothas’ are taken out in a procession to the beating of drums and bursting of firecrackers. As the procession ends, the idols are placed on a pedestal. With a sword and jingling bells, a dancer whirls round in imitation of the bhootha he represents. Frantically pacing up and down, he enters into a possessed state and acts as an oracle.BhootaKola is performed by a trained person who is believed to have temporarily become a god himself. The performer displays an aggressive outlook, dances fiercely and performs multiple rituals. This performer is feared and respected in the community and is believed to give answers to people’s problems on behalf of the god. Drums and music give company to the dancing and pooja rituals. By praying together during BhootaKola, the community seeks God’s blessing, prosperity and riddance of various problems the community is challenged with. Popular Bhootas: Panjurli, Bobbarya, Guliga, Maisandaya, kodamanthaya, Manthradevathe, ,sathyadevathe, Kalkuda Kallurti, Pilichamundi, Koti Chennaya are some of the popular gods (Bhootas) worshipped as part of BhootaKola. Some of the BhootKola rituals also involve walking on a bed of hot coal. BhootaKola is performed Tulunadu (Mangalore, Udupi and kasaragodu) BhootaKola is not a tourist event and is not advertised much in mainstream media. However there are no restrictions on who can witness the performances. While staying in Udupi or Mangaluru district you may check with your local host for any possible BhootaKola performances coming up.

Pregnant women were not allowed to watch the Bhoota Kola due to the high energy involved during the Kola.

I do not know anything about this ritual. But that DID NOT look or sound like “devil worship” as you say in the first line. Or have you just copy-pasted it from some abrahamic media who don’t know head from tail of ancient OR modern Indian culture or rituals? Look at your logic - in the first line you say “‘devil worship” - then halfway you are equating “bhootha” with God? Other things you have said don’t add up either.

Not anArtist ,They are visible Gods for us,we also have it in our place we believe it wholeheartedly and pray to these Gods and Every year at the time of this Kola ,We call it Thira ,Where ever we are we will reach there to see our Gods and get their blessings 🙏🙏🙏
