I have one. It was ever so slightly out on the line test. I loosened the hex screw on the base, flexed the rule, tightened the screw. Good and square after that. Good enough for woodworking. If you’re setting up tools, you should be using a machinists square anyway.

try the Savage SVR149 by Swanson. It has what they call a "kickstand" that holds the square on the edge of a board. I picked one up at Lowes and its dead square. It probably won't stand up to the abuse your Milwaukee speed square will but its a good tool

👍. Thanks for the suggestion. I will see if my Lowes has it next time I go in there. I don’t remember seeing one.

Morning! Check out the Swanson Speed Square Pro (Lowe’s to see in person). It’s been redesigned to mark both sides. It won’t mark the entire long side of a stud, but still faster and more accurate than using the diamonds.

I see what you mean on the Swanson and they make a small trim square which I prefer the size of. I think I’m going to go get one of those today. I really prefer speed squares anyways. You are right it won’t mark 100% the other side, but I’m good with that. I just like having something on both sides so that if I’m at a certain position on a ladder I’m not trying to get to the other side of the stud. I don’t normally frame walls and stand them up. I’m usually doing remodels where there isn’t room for that. I can also make the two marks, slide it, and then fully mark the other if I want to. 3 swipes, but no searching for the diamonds… I’ll take it 😂 Thanks for the suggestion 👍

Do you still have it? Is it really good? The durability? I'm researching a Square to buy I found this model, I'm researching, to see if it's worth it, because it's expensive 😅, I want to use it in marble works, if you can tell me your experience with this square, thank you 🤝

I still have it, it’s not a bad square… except that it wasn’t square 😂 It wasn’t off much, just depends on what kind of precision work you do. I probably wouldn’t buy any square unless I could check it out in the store

I bought this same square from Amazon and it’s as square as can be. For those that aren’t square, I’m wondering if loosening the hex nut in the corner will allow it to be calibrated?
@MORGANSMaintenance
@MORGANSMaintenance Месяц назад
I’m sure you can probably adjust it. Mine was close enough for what I wanted to use it for. That’s the downside to ordering tools like this online. You can check the bunch on the shelf and find you a good one

So I seen a video a while back about this issue with squares like that. In video they talked about taking center punch and punching outside corner to push square in and punching inside corner to plush square out. I know if this will help in this situation. Video was on the 1 pieces large squares (24" I think).
@MORGANSMaintenance
@MORGANSMaintenance Год назад
I hadn’t ever heard that. This one seems like it is only out on the inside and not the outside… which to me almost means the ruler is not cut correctly. You would think it would be out both ways if it was an “out of square” issue. I’m going to try to shave that side down straight and get to the 1-1/2 at the same time. I’m going to look up what you are talking about though… it would be a good thing to know.

I too prefer to layout both sides of the stud on the face of the plate. I have tried many squares but always come back to an aluminum Stanley framing square. The one side of the blade is exactly 1 1/2". The long blade allows me to mark 2- 2x6 or 2- 2x8 plates. Also the framing square let's me layout 2x12 rim joists. The only drawback is it doesn't fit in your tool apron so I carry a speed square in my apron. When laying out the framing square would never need to be in my a apron anyway. Nothing beats a high quality framing square on the job and knowing how to use it.

👍… I build a lot of walls in place in my work, no room to build and stand up. I have had too many times where I change directions and with only marking one side I end up putting a stud on the wrong side of the line somewhere. If I mark both, it helps that not happen. Appreciate your thoughts 👍👍

LOL, I tried to warn you. From my perspective, it's either square or it isn't. I use my squares to not only mark lines but to spot check blades for square (miter saw/table saw). A square out of square only compounds issues elsewhere. As always, thanks for the honest review.

I know I didn’t buy it because of the feedback… my buddy who doesn’t watch my videos brought it to me and said he thought it looked like something I would like. I’m going to try cutting it down to 4” long and see if I shave the bottom of the ruler to square it and get to 1-1/2” wide…. Then it will be a layout only square. We will see.

It's like with any door. Either closed or opened. There are no inbetween values. Square or not. Sometimes I buy a really cheap (and I mean really) combination square and square it myself. Usually they have a ruler part made of steel and a "handle" part made of low grade aluminium. So I just shave the handle square on a mitre saw. Usually you need to remove like 0,1 - 0,2 mm (whatever it is in bananas). It takes me about 10 minutes to set up the saw, cut it and then clean. Because a really cheap combi square goes for $6, a really good one goes for $40-100 (I'm talking to you Starrett), doing so is worth my time. And given that squares wear out over time, I prefer it that way. But when it comes to any other squares, they have to be dead accurate. I pay and and I demand accuracy.
@MORGANSMaintenance
@MORGANSMaintenance Год назад
Yeah I think I’m going to try shaving this one down to 3 1/2” in length and also try squaring it up and getting it to 1-1/2” wide. It seems like it’s only the one side of the ruler that has something out. Those numbers mean nothing to you… 😂😂. But that will work for 2x4 framing for me, which is what I wanted to use this for.

@@MORGANSMaintenance When it comes to imperial measurement it's ok, until it goes down to 15/16 or 33/64. Then it's bananas. Not to mention that 2x4 is 1-1/2 x 3-1/2... I know - before milling, after milling and all that stuff, but it's crazy impractical. I always give an example of an American down-to-earth approach towards reality with door handles. In Europe we have a keyhole below the door handle, you have it above. Now imagine trying to open an European door with a key when drunk... That's why I appreciate your solution. And all of sudden there's that imperial measurement shit. Yeah, using some steel cutting saw blade you can make it right and square easily.

I’m going to go to Morgan’s Milling 😂😂.. it seems like the bottom of the ruler is the only part out. I’m going to try and shave down the thickness to 1-1/2” and see if I can true it up at the same time. Also cut down the ruler to about 4”

Yeah I agree, if it was 1-1/2” wide I would be using it for it…. I am probably going to cut it off at 3-1/2”, shave it down to 1-1/2”, and see if I can square it up at the same time. But that’s why I said that little bit off for me doesn’t matter… for some people it may, just depends on what you want to use it for.
