As part of our series presented by Google Arts and Culture, Anupama Chopra spoke to Karan Johar about the Golden Era of Hindi Cinema (1948-1965). Karan shared insights into how this era's music and films, such as Awaara, Kaagaz Ke Phool, and Pyaasa, influenced his upbringing and career. He discussed the impact of legendary figures like Guru Dutt, R. D. Burman, and Lata Mangeshkar, along with other filmmakers of the time, contrasting their passion-driven art with today's commercialized cinema. Karan also lamented the diminishing of cinematic artistry in favor of box office metrics.

He is absolutely right. I am a Bollywood fan from west Africa and must say, I am having a hard time finding the kind of movies that made me fall in love with Bollywood to watch today. I want back those movies that had songs that went along with the story. Bollywood looses its identity when they forget that key element. Does the current movies really reflect the current Indian society??? Has Indians really shifted away from their culture that much???? I will just wait for the next Sanjay Leela's' next movie then.

Everyone wants their dough to multiply and no one has the balls to make a film out of passion alone. Raj Kapoor went almost bankrupt for Mera Naam Joker, so did Sunil Dutt for Reshama aur Shera. They just love the money too much to lose any now.
