In this episode I had the pleasure of talking to Karan Katiyar, the guitarist, flute player, and producer for Indian folk metal band Bloodywood. Karan was one of the most humble, open, and honest artists I've ever had a conversation with, and you don't get many artists that are willing to talk in depth about some of the topics we covered.

As an Indian metalhead and Metal Vocalist, I can't express what hope Bloodywood has instilled in the Indian metal scene, there were times our metal band performed for free in front of a crowd who did not know anything about metal, now have Indians online who know what metal is.

As a German citizen, I would like to apologize to Karan Katiyar. Unfortunately, there are still people in our country who haven't learned anything from our past. Racism is still a big issue in our country and it's growing. Germany is becoming more and more multicultural from year to year, and many people don't seem to be able to handle it. But what they forget is that we all share the same earth. It makes me sad that you had to experience racism in Germany. Because our country has so much beauty to offer and so many lovely people. But one experience of racism is enough and all of that is overshadowed by it.

I, as a German citicen , travelled through India 5 times and thousends of miles and this year I'll go back to India for a longer time. India gave me a new home and I never experienced any kind of rascism. I lived with muslims , hindus, jain and what you might find there. Being in any kind of trouble I ALWAYS found a helping hand just for a "thank you". Here in Germany we have many migrants and significant part of them behave very bad. Especially people fron the islamic part of the world. We have no go areas, arabian or turkish gangs, very violent people, and thats what the Germans see in the streets. The majority of well behaving , hard working people are not seen anywhere, so they get a wrong impression. But in Germany it's a "NO GO" to talk about this violence of migrants and the common political parties refuse any discussion about that. They leave this urgent debate to stupid NAZI-punks. Many normal people feel like being "left alone" with the problems. Feeling helpless makes you agressive especially when you are not "so well educated". And it's about the mass media: You don't read Hassan is doing well in his job, you read : " Two young people where killed on a train by an Arabian guy with a long criminal record. Why was this guy not in prison. Namaste and love .

Utter nonsense. Racism is a problem everywhere in the world. Tank said as much in the video. It doesn't matter what terrible past a country had or didn't have, it's a bunch of assholes ruining the fun for perfectly reasonable people. And so when you denounce and loathe your very own country for those "Einzelfälle", that's what pisses me off. It's the same way I'm pissed of when the AfD talks shit about refugees, because one happened to commit a crime. It's literally the same freaking logic! If you wanna pull the "This country is literally full of Nazis" card, you're more than welcome to GTFO out of Germany if you're oh so triggered. But don't talk smack and relay it to our past because that gets you thumbs up from the leftist bubble. Not only that, but you're devaluing the people that have suffered unimaginable fates by claiming everything is bad as the Holocaust and that there's somehow an uproar of systematic racism without backing it up with data. Thing is, if not for this band, I know for certain I would not be here. Bloodywood saved my life -- and I will be forever grateful to them. Had it not been for Jee Veerey saving my life, I would not be in the lives of my niece and my nephew. There is no way I could ever pay the debt of gratitude I owe them. Their lyrics convinced me to keep fighting at a time when I didn't feel like it. And as a result, whenever I come across people who might need a voice to keep them encouraged, to keep them fighting, I lend them my strength and courage to keep going. And in that way, I pay it forward what Bloodywood did for me. Thanks, Tank, for the interview, and my eternal thanks to Bloodywood for being the awesome guys that they are. They are awesome humans.

@@TankTheTech : Here are two hashtags I always use: #MusicIsMyWeapon #MusicSavesLives And I use these two hashtags because I'm a firm believer that music has a unique way of expressing emotion that other mediums just can't. And in that respect, music like Bloodywood's has a way of reaching people that other things may not -- and in that process, break down barriers and walls to actually help people heal. It is why I am such a huge supporter of music in general, because music is a human universal, and there is music somewhere for everyone. And when music speaks to so many, it has the power to unite like no other.

Jee Veerey saved my life too. I found it when I was in a domestic violence shelter, having finally escaped an abusive marriage, and the song flattened me. I went weeks at a time getting up in the morning, looking in the mirror, and saying "You're not done yet, today you won't die." Rait Baney Loha is tattooed on the inside of my left forearm, and I'm trying to decide which lyrics from Aaj will be next. Bloodywood Saves Lives. Absolutely unique sound. Absolutely authentic people.

Absolutely loved this interview, Karan is so interesting to listen to, I know a bit about Indian culture and how hard it is for musicians to break away from the Bollywood schtick. Bloodywood are a fantastic band with a sound that nobody could emulate.

man, I am an older metal head, I absolutely love this band and have shared them with a number of friends, I hope that the music brings them the same peace that it brings me. I am an Afghan war vet, and man everything can be a struggle some days, but songs like Jee Veerey have been able to speak to feelings that I have had a hard time talking to other people about. I can't say I have ever had music hit me that way before. And seeing the interview, how great a person Karan is, man I want to meet more people like you in my every day life.

Karan's answer to the last question made me tear up. Bloodywood as a band have brought me many emotional moments over the years, and I am so happy that they are starting to get the recognition they deserve. Tank, that was not an interview, that was simply two like-minded people talking, nerding out over technical stuff at moments, laughing together about stories about Indian college students and creating a bond. Thank you for bringing these two hours of delight to us. Album and merch is pre-ordered and now I'm off to convince my best friend to see Bloodywood live in Stuttgart in March next year! :D

lol when you're were talking about the intern just clicking No on the copyright claims, my first thought was "Like trying to get the US visa..." and there goes Karan and actually says it!!!! I swear you have no idea how it is to apply for that visa as a latinx or, as you can see by this interview, indian. I had all my papers in order for a tech conference in New Orleans and I got my visa denied, why? because. That's it, that's the answer you get after you already spent a lot of money just to get an appointment. Anyways, I really felt that last answer by Karan, about the song in the right moment cause when I was sharing the album I talked about Bloodywod with an acquaintance I don't talk to that often and she tells me "You know... I really needed this right now", turns out she was going through depression and hadn't told anyone. She absolutely loved Jee Veerey.

Even though the EU concert tour is cancelled, Bloodywood is still in the lineup for the Friday of Summer Breeze festival in August, which is the day that I will be there. Fingers crossed that it will happen...

I basically agree with Tank, Bloodywood can become a game changer in metal. I think the main reason for that is that they show a dimension metal so far has hardly dwelled on at least when it comes to the big acts, and that is the element of local culture. Metal from the beginning was global; it might has started in the UK and mostly spread to the USA and Europe, there is a global reception. And now the whole world has artists that mirror back local culture. I immediatly have to thing of the Roots phase of Sepultura, when they used traditional brasilian style of rhythms and instruments to add a different flavor and it was huge. Now this scope broadens. Bloodywood combine more than solid Nu-Metal with one of the biggest musical cultures there is on this planet. I still remember listening to Punjabi MC like 20 years and being like... why has nobody done anything like that but in the metal genre. Add to that what mad rhythmic going on prog metal, it funny that few people thought of inspiration from indian music (save say Mattias IA Eklundh... and I still have to learn Konokol properly). Eitherway I think locally cultured metal with become big, just as in the pop work we had the Psy moment where Korea entered the equation and now 10 years later K-Pop is big, like seriouly BIG. And this can also happen in Metal. Appart from that Karan seems such a sweat guy, this was great podcast and wish him and Bloodywood all the best. I love how far they have already come, but there is massive potential and it good to know they are actually great guys. But next time you are in Germany, please don't drink Faxe. It might look impressive but it sure is not the best beer you can have.

I have been totally shocked by a band twice in my life. First time around year 2000 by Slipknot and second time couple weeks ago by Bloodywood. Those guys are absolutely amazing, I could listen to their music all the time and I wanna support them as much as possible. Karan seems like a really nice guy and I thank Tank for this interview. Karan's answer to the last question was awesome. I have already done that with multiple people. Most importantly for was showing bloodywood to my mother. She does not like metal at all. Like myself she has struggled with mental illness most of her life. I finally convinced her to watch Jee veerey and she was so completely blown away by the message. So much so she shared it with her therapist who was also mind blown. Tank, I was thrilled you have a tattoo of the Jester head. In Flames is one of my all time favorite bands. They are not super popular here in America. I have met many metal heads that have never heard of them. I live in Boston which had a pretty big metal scene in the late 90's and early 2000's. Bloodywood if you guys come to Boston I will buy tickets the moment they go on sale. I would even pay extra for a meet and greet.

Outstanding, Tank! Thank you Karan! I discovered Bloodywood spring of 2019 with their metal cover of Tunak Tunak and did a deep dive into what they had out at that time. The traditional instruments blended with rock hit me in all the feels. Their altruism and humbleness make them well rounded and a joy to listen to! I love them so much! Hope to see them in the states soon.

What a great conversation! I wouldn't really call it an interview, it was much too intimate and open for that. Originally, I planned to have it play in the background while tinkering on my old motorbike. But then, 2 1/4 hours later, I found myself sitting on the floor in front of the open ingition timer casing, wrench still in hand and I didn't lift a single finger while listening to you guys, it was that riveting. I saw Bloodywood live in Wacken, back in 2019 and although I could only make it for the last 3 songs (I was a bit too hungover to make it in time) it was a blast. I really hope we can all come back to the "holy ground" someday and have a good time again.

Loved this. I have the same sentiment about the album as well Tank. I think Zanjeero Se and Endurant are my favorites because I'm a sucker for LP/Rise Against style octave cords. I'd also note that Bsdk.exe is my favorite "banger" track with Dana Dan being a close second.

I finally came back to listen to the rest of the interview and it was fantastic. Karan and the rest of the band are so genuine and real. I love the outreach they have done. Ian, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this. Bloodywood captured my heart 3 years ago, and I've been a proud supporter ever since. On the other hand, I've been watching your channel since you began, and am so stoked to see how you've grown. The convergence of these two entities just made me so happy! If I could throw in some Deep Purple and a bit of Nightwish, I'd happily die on the spot, completely fulfilled. What a man Karan! What a humble and cool guy he is. I have to say that I just watched the entire interview/talk without knowing a single song by the band. At this precise moment I am going to listen to them and beyond my personal taste I wish them the best. This was a treat to watch. Karan seems like a cool humble dude. I am seriously stoked for this band and I can’t believe how great rakshak sounds for a self produced album. My family is originally from delhi and I grew up in the states as a nu metal/metalcore Indian kid in the 2000s who also loves bhangra and Indian rhythms. I grew up with both so to see this synthesis (machi bhasad was the first song I heard from them) just blew my mind. I’m hoping I won’t be the only brown guy at metal shows after these guys blow up-they are that good. Can’t wait to see these guys live stateside!

2:13:00 I just did it (again) today. I was so surprised that there's an Indian Folk Metal Band which I have never heard before. in my country, India = Bollywood. I'm trully apologize, but that's what people here knows. around 2 months ago, first song I've heard was "Dana Dan" suggested by youtube. then I listen to their album. each songs in Rakshak has a story related to real life. that's why I recommend it to my friend. the way they made the lyrics, and mix the music is amazing! they're also give a lot of effort for their tour. I’ve watched the reaction videos but first time listening to an interview and this was excellent. Great work really allowed Karan to feel comfortable and open up to his experiences. Don’t be afraid to veer away from the music sometimes as you’ll get some great conversations!

Sat through it all with a smile on my face. Got to know about Bloodywood from Stevie T and it's been a fucking long time since I've been so moved by a band's music. Ran into your channel and now this interview and man what can I say, getting Karan and listening to his take on stuff was so cool. Your reactions and gear breakdowns too. Thanks for uploading this! A tat in Hindi from a part of Endurant's lyrics is on its way for me, first tat ever in my whole 32 years of life so far. Their music has moved me that much. This was such an amazing interview. Got yourself a new subscriber since I watched your reaction to Gaddaar, Dana Dan and Machi Bhasad if I recall correctly. Great stuff, keep it up man! Love the talk about live music equipment! I think all you really need on tour is a good amp/combo you like with a proper attenuator/load box and speeker simulation. Something like Captor X from Two Notes, Suhr Reaload, etc.. Everything will be loud enough once connected to mix console/PA system. For ex. Paul Landers from Rammstein use ONLY his signature multieffect from the Tech 21 directly to recording device or live to PA. :)

Tank, this was such a great...it really was more of a conversation than an interview. I really look forward to you doing more of these. :) And Karan shows again what an amazing human being he is; I loved his shout out to WildlifeSOS, which I donate to regularly. Absolutely brilliant interview. Podcasts rarely grab my meager attention span so I can't believe I sat through and enjoyed this entire thing in one go! Bloodywood is amazing and not only are they gonna carve a path forward for Indian metal, but they are definitely going to leave a lasting impression on metal as a whole. Loved seeing Karan and Tank connect and even bond over so much stuff. You da man, Tank!

I've been waiting until I had enough time to watch this in its entirety and it didn't disappoint! Maybe one of the best interviews I've ever heard - and it's because it NEVER felt like an interview! If I didn't know any better, I'd think you & Karan had been friends for a long time & were just catching up. That's rare - and a credit to both of you!

My daughter and I have watched your rise from day one and have been introduced to some incredible bands and music and we are both so excited to now watch the rise of this incredible band. It took me a while and a few sittings to listen to it all (since it is a quite long conversation) but it was totally worth it. Very informative and with this format of you both just talking about stuff without a fixed plan it gives a good look into the personality of the person, which is really nice. I have followed Bloodywoods music since I stumbled upon Jee Veerey some years back (shortly after release I think) and while not everything hits my taste, there are some really great songs in their collection, that I often listen to. The latest being Aaj. You are doing a good job guys.

I've got their video for Dana Dan pop up as an ad, and the visuals looked interesting, so I decided to listen. Best decision I've made in a while. The music paired with the message works really well. I am now beginning the interview, but I know it's going to be an interesting conversation Edit 1: the word you're looking for Tank is "privileged" Edit 2: finished watching the interview and loved it. Karan has such a calm(ing) and thoughtful personality. I love his honesty and willingness to be vulnerable. And I appreciated the topics approached, from their first festival outside of India, to the treatment of animals, to racism. From the three episodes of the podcast I've seen, this one is by far my favourite (even though I'm a big Sabaton fan). I need to go listen to Bloodywood's full album from start to finish right now

This is the most unique podcast/interview. My parents listened to like 60's, 70's and 80's country music or classic rock compared to my taste of Alternative metal and deathcore. It surprises me when people mention how certain people live life. I think that BloodyWood peaked my interest about folk metal

Awesome podcast. I love Bloodywood and their album is amazing! Also I agree with your comment about the bands that react to their community, my favourite band at the moment is Ferocious Dog and they are always on their Facebook group and talking to all of their fans.

Cudos to you TankTheTech! I just loved this interaction with you guys and what a way to leran more about these awesome guys in Bloodywood. They really have rocked their way in to my life since I first saw your first reaction to these guys. The whole vibe of this band and their music gives me so much energy. And I agree that this record will be one or if not the absolute favorite of 2022 for me. Not a single track is bad and their epic style has really got to me. And their messages in their songs are what we all need! So once again TankTheTech thanks for doing this and for you being you! Best two hours I had in a long time!😁
