In section 4, Popper delves into Hume's problem of induction, Hume's psychological theory of induction, and how his own story about conjectures and refutations differs from that of Hume. I spend quite some time ensuring that we do not fall into the many possible pitfalls of interpretation here -- e.g., the pitfall of thinking of confusing Popper's method with the inductivist method of 'learning from your failures'.

This is the last video I am watching of Victor Gijberg's Popper critique. So, it's notebook and pencil time and back to re-listening Victor's complete Popper series, whilst taking some notes, and (then) re-reading the relevant sections of my "Conjectures and Refutations". Victor Gijbers is a first class philosopher who (as Popper writes about Marx) 'wants to be understood', and he also shares with Sir Karl an absolute clarity of expression when engaged in complex analysis; no small achievement. Super glad that I have found your channel. I am 3rd year PhD student and this has been tremendously helpful to my inquiries about development assessment. Indeed, it seems to me that I was putting so much focus in sociological frameworks that I got lost in determing the problems of demarcation specially when indicators (and constructs such as resilience well being, quality of life, and others) are so linked to public policies and normative procedures.

When Popper says that we should make bold hypotheses and test them, we can find out if they are false. But, whether they will be false in the future is still based on induction. Where am I going wrong?

Engineering is a very bad example. Structural engineering in practice is not scientific in sensu stricto (although it loves to claim to be) but relies mostly on heuristical models. Also, Popper never claimed that his critical rationalism is an "universal philosophy" - rather the opposite, he always states clearly, that it is a philosophy for empirical science. Does "Logik der Wissenschaft" ring a bell maybe? Strawmanning Popper like this seems to be usual modus operandi for university professors, but to be honest, we have a very mild case here.
