What a sad story 😢. Reminds me of my cousin that left baseball to be a gangster. Ended up going in and out of prison doing stints like 1.5, 2 and 7 years. He got his freedom at 40 years old to then end his own life because when he was gonna do another 8 years. Some people can't leave the streets alone. Quit while your ahead.

I have seen so many ppl from dead end no opportunity environments absolutely refuse to leave to do better OR stay away in a productive environments to do better. I don't understand it but it's definitely a mental complex alot of ppl grapple with.

These stories are always tragic. Jealousy rules the hoods. It’s men that act like women with jealousy and envy smh. This reminds me of the story about Bucky in Philly. He could have been a pro boxer, even Will Smith tried to get Bucky to come to L.a for awhile. But he chose the streets just like this young man and ultimately lost his life. It never ends well.

You do such a great job of telling their stories and making us become invested in it. Sometimes when you be telling us their stories I get frustrated because I want them to make the better choice. I know it's too late and I know it's old and yet I still want better for them. It's crazy when you want something for someone more than they want it for themselves. And a stranger at that. I'm so disappointed that he quite or gave up on school so easily but was willing to work so damn hard and long for the drug game. And I don't understand why the guys don't realize that you can't keep running to the same hood places when you decide to make changes in your life for the better. Just think if he had not planned that party in his hood and made plans to work out in his old gym in the hood. He could have just went somewhere new, worked out for his try out, maybe he would have still been alive for his 2nd chance to play basketball 🏀 😒 and raise his kids.

I don’t feel bad for him at all. He had everything he needed. All the tools to go and become a basketball superstar but he wanted to slum because he was homesick. His life turned out the way it did because that’s what HE WANTED. He didn’t have to have a wicked jumpshot or sling crack rock because even if he never made it to the NBA he had a full ride and could’ve gotten a degree! Smh! Accountability!!!

If Hines had a positive male role model in his life, his life could've been much different.

Man I'm 43 right now and remember Hines when broke kids like my family splurged and got espn/ cable when parents were parents and this was the year my Cincinnati Bearcats went to the final 4 but my old man being from Syracuse and following orange basketball and Bearcats basketball and telling me a few years before he was murdered how Hines was gonna be the next Oscar Robertson! This is why a father is so necessary - and any single moms who read this, please don't take this the wrong way. But boys COPY what they see from their parents. Women tend to be much more emotional than men are, he needed to be taught NOT to react to situations emotionally as a man. See, the world will tolerate an emotional woman, but the world has no mercy on emotional men. He needed to learn that BOYS do what they FEEL like doing - MEN do what they HAVE to do - and a boy can only TRULY learn that from a man who teaches him verbally and more importantly, BY EXAMPLE. Had he gotten those lessons from his father or a father figure much earlier in his life - when the homesick situation arose in Maine, he would have handled it like a man. But getting emotional and running away from that problem was a huge mistake that changed the entire trajectory of his life - and NOT for the better. Sleep in peace Karlton Dunkin Hines - BX LEGEND.
