On Feb. 11, 2023, Texas A&M Forest Service and multiple partners planted nearly 600 trees in the Kashmere Gardens neighborhood of Houston in an effort to counter the effects of urban heat islands.
More than 60 volunteers helped plant white oak, Shumard oak, pecan, sugarberry and nutall oak trees. The planting was made possible with a donation from Repsol through the Texas A&M Forest Service’s Green Futures corporate sustainability partnership program. Other partners in the project were the Northeast Houston Redevelopment Council, the City of Houston, Caddo Sustainable Timberlands, Texas Conservation Alliance, Houston Galveston Area Council and Sun Coast Resources.
In addition to the planting, more than 500 seedlings were distributed to community members.
It was the fifth Green Futures planting across 15 months. Over that time, Green Futures has secured $166,500 in corporate investment, partnered with 37 organizations, and engaged more than 600 volunteers and planted 11,350 native trees across Texas.
