What an authentic and beautiful concert. How come things became so plastic since these days. Thanks McGarrigles - bless you

That was a concert recorded by our regional tv station WDR (west german tv). I was nine years old then and only saw a part of it on our black and white tv device then (we only received three stations then). But what I now know as "Complainte pour Ste. Catherine" was then one of those moments in childhood when you don't know what you hear but you want to hear it again and are afraid of probably never hearing it again because you have no clue what it is. About twenty years later I got their first records and immidiately recognized it, happily. And at the same time it is scary to see what a deep and life lasting impression just a bit of some special music and singing can leave in a child's memory and soul. Paradise lost, from the beginning to the end.

Very well expressed! I didn't know 'Complainte' or the McGarrigle sisters in 1977, neither was I aware of something like "Rockpalast" then, but I know how you feel. I only got to know this peculiar song much later (through the Dutch Top 2000) . But later in the 1980s I discoverd the Rockpalast concerts (because living close to the German border in the Netherllnds we received not only two Dutch tv-stations, but an aditiional three Germans as well 🙂). These broadcastings always were the creme of the crop. So glad that RU-vid offers the opportunity to see things like this you weren't even aware that you had missed them! 0.

Complainte pour Ste. Catherine is played on Canada's Ici Musique, and when they had a new album out in the early 90s, they got a lot of radio play on CBC. Their ties to Emmy Lou Harris and others shows how music is its own passport.

While live shows are "fun" for performers and listeners, it shows up just how superbly polished Kate and Anna's studio work was.

I saw them around this time at Convocation Hall in Toronto. The band was Gerry Conway drums, Pat Donaldon, bass, piano and a hammond played by a then unknown fellow from Quebec, who played excellently. No fiddle or accordion as i recall. Their other sister, of whom we knew nothing, sudden appeared about half way through and sang as sweetly as her sisters. T'was the 70's of course, when gigs were awesome and endless, - rock, folk or jazz.

Thank the curator at your library! I grew up in a blue-collar industrial hellhole, but someone at the local library had impeccable taste and turned me on to so much amazing music even with the library's limited offerings - and set me on a lifelong path of seeking out great music. I wish I could thank that person because she or he one of the most influential people in my life!

Joan Baez wrote in her memoir that she didn't think they were particularly accomplished musicians.

There's probably some truth in that. There are zillions of virtuosos out there who are "accomplished musicians" but couldn't hold a candle to the purity and soul of these sisters.
