1. heck no this song would not destroy her voice this performance was perfect! 2. yes she doesnt sound anything like the actual Elphaba's on broadway & the west end etc she's better! She makes the song entirely her own and I love this version and no I'm not being biased as one of my idols is a current Elphaba yet I seriously prefer Kate's version, just saying
I just got massive chills when she got to "So if you care to find me..." Wow. She has amazing talent. I hope she does et to be Elphaba. That would make me happy because I've been itching for a reason to see Wicked again. This would be PERFECT!
I am not sure that she would necessarily kill her voice. I think she could be one of the few that's voice doesn't die. She is a high belter, but it would really be all about technique.
Kate is amazing. First heard her in Frank Wildhorn's 'Dracula' (gorgeous music, 1000% recommend it especially 'At Last') and recognised her voice in Frank Wildhorn's 'Wonderland'... 'I Will Prevail' is the greatest power ballad in this world! And I really like the thought of her as Elphaba. :D
@broadwaybrent367 There are a lot of parts, but specially her "pull me down" sequences, "I hope you're happy in the end" and from the "if I'm flying solo" to the end - paying attention to her "defying". Sometimes it sounds like tries to "cover" the sound, but in general, her timbre is not young sounding enough for me. I love her in other roles. =)
That's so cool! I always hear about Birdland, I want to go to one, already! lol But I don't know much about it so, it's probably important people only :) thanks for answering! She truly does sound wonderful.
She wont be playing this role for a while because shes playing the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland on Broadway from March 21st 2011 (Previews) and it officially opens on April 17th 2011
@FernandoLopes0691 About vibrato, I can hear a clear difference when she uses it in phrases like "defying" (somewhat dark) and "high" (w/ vibrato, but pretty bright). As I said, I love her voice, love this performance, I just don't think it's suitable in the musical context. Just a personal opinion, but I'd surely pay to see her do this role. :P
Yeah, SORT of an Original Cast girl, as she has originated five roles since 2002, scoring a nomination for every single one (well, except for Young Frankenstein but what do you expect?!) That's 4 Tony Nominations (including the one win), each for a character she created. Pretty darn impressive. Even so she doesn't seem to have the correct range for Elphaba. It's not that her voice is weak. It's a powerhouse, but it's just not the right sound for Elphie.
She's awesome! total Elphaba! The only thing is that she's waaay above what the sheet music is, and you can hear it tug on her vocal cords on the "deFYing gravity" part.
@FernandoLopes0691 I don't know what part of this performance strikes you as dark. Are you mistaking vibrato for a dark quality? She's very bright! LOVE Kate.
@davischrisb Apparently, I'm the only one who thinks her voice is mostly dark. Haha. I don't know, once she gets more power, it sounds darker (covered), but still somewhat "frontal", hence the "brightness" - which I don't see as a bright quality, but anyway. About the other girls performing it, I'm used to a lighter sounding voice (lighter in 'weight', so to speak, but strong and belt-like) for Elphaba, I can't understand the directors. What matters is that we all love her voice. :)
I'd bet 99% chance it is from a gay bar in New York called Splash. They have a broadway night once a week, and lots of people have sung there. It looks like Splash in the first photos. A liberal ex-Miss America? That's a first. Her voice has improved a lot.
@FernandoLopes0691 I guess it's just a matter of opinions. Haha. I guess I've just never seen her vocals as dark. And I guess I'm looking at the big picture.. cause she's overall bright, IMO.
Oh and I forgot to add that Sutton hardly has the best of lucky with shows with green leads. Regardless she wouldn't be eligible for awards, so it wouldn't really affect the latest Tony curse, but still.
.......can she....play this role on broadway right now please? god i HOPE she replaces mandy after she leaves, but her voice will be shattered afterwards tht the sad part.... I havent heard of one actress who has played this role and has not had their voice change in some way :(
i don't think so. i used to want her to be elphaba but not that i hear it, she really doesn't have elphaba's voice. Kate mixes all of her high parts till it sounds very thin and at times very shrill. eden and sho also mix alot, but their voices take to it much better the tones are alot more pleasant. that might be the reason she didn't cast
@FernandoLopes0691 I have to say I disagree. Still! I still think she's very bright. I don't know. I don't disagree with your opinion of her timbre not being young enough, but I still think she sounds about the same as anything other girl who's played it, and that she's not dark.
