*Click "Show more" below for lyrics* My all-time favorite song! Beautiful, calming, soothing. Recorded for Columbia on 8/17/31. Written by Howard E. Johnson - Harry M. Woods - and Kate Smith! This is Kate's theme song, and she would perform it countless times throughout her 50+ year career. Enjoy!
LYRICS:
(Spoken)
Hello, everybody!
This is Kate Smith.
(Sung)
All by myself at twilight
Watching the day depart
And with the fading twilight
Happiness fills my heart
When the moon comes over the mountain
Every beam brings a dream dear, of you
Once again we stroll 'neath the mountain
Through that rose-covered valley we knew
Each day is gray and dreary
But the night is bright and cheery
When the moon comes over the mountain
I'm alone with my memory
Of you
BREAK
Each day is gray and dreary
But the night is bright and cheery
When the moon comes over the mountain
I'm alone with my memory
Of you

Kate Smith recorded those offensive songs in the early 30s, when racism was rampant in the entertainment industry. Who’s next? Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Fred Astaire, Shirley Temple, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland? They’ve all done racist things in their careers. Why are we picking on Kate, a proud democrat who believed in equality for all? What happened to historical context? The Flyers should be ashamed.

To the moderator, thank you for your post. This is not only happening to Kate Smith, but also people like Laura Ingalls Wilder and Father Junipero Serra. I cannot answer in such a short post. Suffice to say there is something ominous going on. Beauty, truth and virtue are under attack by ideological forces that are not good for the country. Thank you for these songs for they remind us of the past where beauty was appreciated more.

I am a liberal and have always loved Kate Smith and always will. Yes those 2 songs were racist Kate later in her career never sang them again either. I think she was being unfairly judged , remember she was a young singer when those songs were sung and the film studios and record companies told you what to sing or else you didn't get paid. Fine example is Frank Sinatra being forced to sing garbage like Mama Will Bark because Colombia Records and Mitch Miller was his boss. Once freed of those restraints Sinatra never sang it again , neither did Kate Smith sing that foolishness either. Kate Smith didn't live in the past musically ,as she was game for any song of the era. Just my take

The only thing sadder than the fact that there are people so deeply ignorant and frankly just plain stupid as to troll through 90 year old songs looking for something to whine about is that we live in a country run by cowardly fools who pander to them.

I remember running home after school each day to watch The Kate Smith Show. That was in the mid-50’s. My house was 1 1/2 miles and there no school buses then so I would get there just in time. Black and white TVs only, a Philco 14” screen. I didn’t have time to change into my play clothes until my program was over. To this day, I still like her and listen to my favorite songs-“God Bless America” and “When the Moon Comes Over the Mountain”. I was about 9-10 years old and am 80 now

My grandma used to babysit me a lot. She would drive me home at night and sing this while we looked at the moon. I 100% believed she made the song up. Just recently I had the sense to RU-vid it. So glad I did. I miss her so much ❤😢

What a wonderful voice Kate had. Notice the sincerety--a genuine American. I remember back in 1936, we were at a motel outside Detroit and the tavern next door was open all night and the patrons kept putting their nickels into the "juke-box" to hear Kate singing "When the moon comes over the mountain"!! Aren't we fortunate to be able to capture that great voice so that future generations can appreciate that talent?

Mrs Petra Lino, our teacher in 6th grade, now deceased, taught us this song in 1974 together with When It's Springtime in The Rockies and tho it is an old song by then, we loved it and everyday we sang it before ckasses ended in the afternoon. I heard my Mom humming it and so I look it up on RU-vid. Am glad it's here and I feel Nostalgic listening to it like I'm 12 years old once again. I miss my childhood days and my classmates. My Best Regards to them all wherever they are now. Today is Oct 3, 2020.

My grandfather who passed a way 4 years ago, used to sing this to me. It was his version though. I had a form of Colic or something when I was little and I would cry for 2 hours each night for MONTHS, but when he came over everything would be fine and I would calm down when he would sing this song.

Such beautiful words are shared here! Memories of childhood, grandparents, a more rooted life. I was part of it all having been born in 1945. Her TV show was one of 3 or 4 we had. Each was 15 minutes long! That was all the TV that was broadcasted! When the shows became 30 minutes long it was a big deal! We didn't have much of it but it was all good! I don't even have TV now: never could find anything decent! I read and watch movies on RU-vid Or Netflix. THANK YOU, Kate, for the music, memories, and sweetness. I repeat: you have NOT been forgotten! Your songs are second nature to so many of us! Rest In Peace, dear lady! ❤️

'When The Moon Comes over the Mountain' was Kate's theme song. Tonight is a Full Moon here in Ontario, Canada, I noticed it as I parked my car to night. A retired Catholic priest in Canada. She was a good & great lady. Apparently she was content with her hair style...very simple and plain. Perhaps that indicated her life style as well. An American Idol, truly! RIP

Tippi Hedren's memoir brought me here. Tippi Hedren is one of my favorite actresses from the 1960s. I remember when I first saw her in Hitchcock's The Birds, I was immediately captivated by her beauty and most of all, her acting style which showed that this is a woman of the kind of elegance and mannerisms that you don't see very much these days. I read up a bit about her and how she helped a lot of Vietnamese women who were running from their country during the war there, by introducing them to manicures. That's what made me even MORE interested in her. So the next time you walk by a nail salon, think of Tippi Hedren. In her memoir, which I have the readers advanced copy. The book will be released November 1st this year. Anyway, in her memior, she mentions how this was her favorite song when she was little. And that's what brought me here. 😊
