Today, I am joined by the lovely Bonnie Beadle of the Queen Katherine Parr Society (on Instagram) to discuss the last wife of Henry VIII in life and in film. This fun, laid-back episode examines Parr's portrayals in The Tudors, Becoming Elizabeth, and Firebrand.

I really liked the guest. I also came to learn about Katherine Parr through other historical figures (it was through Queen Jane Grey for me). And thank you for noticing that in media they often go with older actresses, in their 40s or even older, playing on the "mature" idea, but she married Henry when she was 31 and died when she was 36. She was only 4 years older than Henry's daughter Mary. The Tudors: as criticised as that show is for historical inaccuracies, I still think that one thing that they managed to nail was the psychology of many of the people involved, including Katherine Parr (Catherine Howard was a miss). Becoming Elizabeth: I agree, it's not even close, in fact it's almost the exact opposite of her. Firebrand: I was also surprised to see that it's radically different from the book. Dot, a major character is almost completely removed (I think she's only mentioned once in passing) and Margaret, Katherine's stepdaughter is nowhere to be seen. I liked the ending, especially her "we're both going to hell, I'm ready, are you?" part and the acting, but the pacing was off. The film felt weird in a lot of moments. Also, it skipped important moments like showing what actually happened to Anne Askew. I also didn't like that Katherine is actually arrested, when the real history is more interesting with Henry's mind games. Then the other characters seem a bit background-ey and not fleshed out enough. There is one I knew it had to be Wriothesley, Gardiner is talking to him, but I don't remember him being mentioned by name. And considering his role in Anne Ankew's case and in the warrant drama with Katherine Parr, you'd think he'd get more to do. But the film did raise an interesting question in my mind: did Henry physically abuse his wives?

So much reminds me of being in front of Edward VI's tomb in Westminster. I became a fan of Edward in Jr College when I read Hester Cahpman's book The Last Tudor King.

I didn’t like Firebrand because of the ending.
