I love that Katherine Hepburn said she had no idea who Phil Donahue was, at least she said she didn't. Either way, it must have been a terrible blow to his ego. He asked some terribly personal and intrusive questions and really put her on the spot. The fact that she never lost her composure was a treat to see. I also loved that she called him egotistical in the banter at the end of the interview, because he was.
@@dabneyoffermein595 Katharine retired in 1994 at 87. She aged so rapidly in the 1990s that her face was unrecognizable but still stood beautiful. Katharine had serious health issues in the last years of her life including Dementia, Pneumonia and even Neck Cancer! She died on June 29th, 2003, at 96 years old.
@@ActingStyle very interesting. she must have been silly wealthy at the end to have worked that long , wow, that's 60 years of work and she probably saved every penny.
I remember watching this interview with my darling husband, and how--how we howled when she didn't know who he was...we always laughed when we remembered it...he's gone now, so thanks for the memory!😅😂❤❤❤
A GREAT interview. Mr. Donahue challenged her with a strong and persistent interview. Hepburn took it all in stride and gave Phil a run for his money by being just as intelligent and intuitive as he was in their conversation together.
"Strong and persistent"? He was obsessed about her affair and her attitudes about death and abortion. It's a shame that the Catholic Donahue brought his morals into the interview.
@@rah62 He was crude, rude, and disrespectful in my opinion. He is vulgar and so lucky that the closest she allowed herself down to his levei was to merely call him out as being "childish ".What a generous euphemism . She truly showed her New England roots when she calmly answered yet one more rude interrogitive with the classic, "I rose above it , " Of course, Phil the Philistine was completely incapable of having the dimmest glimpse of understanding in such a statement.
@@ericcaravag4614 It's worth noting that Hepburn did not agree to a television interview until The Dick Cavett Show in 1973. That accounts for a good twenty to twenty-five years of mistrust and distaste for it...all through the 50s and 60s. It's not such a stretch then to imagine that her continued lack of interest in watching television (particularly of Donahue's level) would mean Donahue himself would be equally off her radar in the 90s too. As it is, Donahue's ego wasn't dented here at all. It gave him a chance to utilise his dry humour and pull her leg about it.
I love how my absolute favorite actress have the same beliefs as I do. Religion, politics, beliefs in freedom, children. I f’n love how independent she was and didn’t need things that a lot of others back then would die to keep up. She was way ahead of her time with being liberating from old beliefs
Thank you for posting this. I've been a fan of Katharine Hepburn for 40 years. I saw this when it aired, but I haven't seen it since then. I like Phil Donahue, but I think he did an awful job with this interview with her. I am surprised her patience with his questions lasted as long as it did. I like interviews with her done by hosts who are star struck with her and treat her with a lot more respect concerning the questions they asked her. This was more like a Nancy Grace interview with a murder suspect. She is normally very funny in her interviews, but in this one she was too uncomfortable to relax.
@@Omnicient. The notion that everyone has narcissism renders the definition of narcissism so wide and thin as to lose meaning in semantic mush. In all my encounters with KH I never saw signs of narcissism; in fact , and notably, I saw constant expressions of empathy and no need for narcissistic supply.
@@Omnicient. Completely illogical / non sequitur analogy. The point you tried to make, that everyone “ has it” is simply not true, while “ everyone eats” is true( except for a tiny set who don’t eat). The spectrum of narcissism is very wide , stretching from mild, benign narcissism to Narcissistic Personality Disorder and malignant narcissism, which manifests as a personal and social danger and deliberate harm to others.Your false claim shows you don’t understand narcissism at all and there is therefore no point in discussing it with you. For me, end of discussion.
Think it was the interesting interview, think it gave you a different side of her, and to be honest think she was enjoying the interview. Think she found the interview interesting.
@@jimtruscott5670 You are spot on, she is a caring, respectful, and loving person certainly not narcissistic. This was the greatest actress of all time, I loved how straightforward she was, she was very sensible in her thought process. A woman ahead of her time.
I love K. Hepburn as anyone on this Earth. And I noticed that most comments here are very critical of Donahue's questions. However, I actually like his questions and I think they are more interesting than most talk show interviewers. I see no problem with them.
They don't come more resilient and thick-skinned than the Hollywood legend quadruple-Oscar winning Katherine Hepburn. So she can take it!! I'm sure she felt completely unchallenged by it. As a fan, I would've enjoyed a less aggressive approach that is respectful and proportional to the magnitude of her status, let alone her age.
He was able to ask what we all wanted to know. But he’s so Roman Catholic his mind just can’t bend her way. She was enjoying herself. We hear it in the end when she mentioned his hair was like Spencer’s. Spencer was erratic, talkative and funny. Kate was laughing because Phil made her laugh.
To an extent I agree but they were hurtful and intrusive; her body language showed that she was sometimes embarrassed and trying to hide it. He lacks empathy; trying to be a particular interviewer is more important for him. Contrasting narcissists with similar agendas.
This is the best interview I've seen with Katherine Hepburn as always she is independent strong yet I found her extremely sweet. She tolerant Phil answered his questions truthfully. I don't agree with all her views but I certainly respected her . She was a fabulous actress I believe Spencer Tracey was the better one unfortunately the most troubled one 😔 ❤️
It's amusing to see Miss Hepburn here. Back in 1973, she had never done a television talk show. She and Dick Cavett did an impromptu interview that was extraordinary. Apparently, she enjoyed the experience because she did many other shows, including this one with Phil.
He was awful!! I don't understand his beef at all. How rude! He was repeatedly asking vicious, barbed, personally hurtful questions that he'd never ask another star. There are so many, many topics he could have addressed. And here she is, the ever stoic Kate, holding her own and checking her temper and remaining graceful and dignified throughout. He is a first class hack and a douchebag.
at this advanced age, she seems so ahead of everyone, so pleasant about her disposition, so immune to the faults and diseases of others. Very at peace and sorted.
Why is this daytime TV guy sitting a foot higher above the quadruple-Oscar winning Hollywood legend Katherine Hepburn? Have to say, after a rocky start, the latter third of the interview was great. I liked Donahue's dry humour, pulling her leg and being cheeky by the end. Katie was cool about it.....frankly I think the thick white hair and blunt talking reminded her of an old flame!! :)
I can't get enough of her. Would have loved to be her neighbor and have an occasional coffee with her. She stayed true to herself and didn't give a damn!
This fella is abominable, he keeps trying to make things something they aren't. As an interviewer he can't handle her directness and the fact that she doesn't see things the same way as he does
Usually I liked Donahue very much, but I agree with you. He seems to want to disagree with everything thhat Katharine Hepburn wrote in her book. He had a lot of nerve talking to her like he did. Katharine Hepburn had every right to get up and leave and tell him to go to Hell.
I agree, there's no point prolonging an existence. The thought of someone being burdened by caring for me. Its a degrading end. She always comes across as a lovely, smart lady
“I don’t see how any thinking woman can say that a woman should be forced to have a baby that she doesn’t want”. Amen to that Ms Katharine! 👏👏👏. She would hate it here today
It is painful, but Mr. Donahue brought up, and asked questions that no other interviewer had done. The reality of Hepburn's relationship with Tracy was not pretty; she never wanted that to be exposed, but in her autobiography, it is inescapable.
Phil reminds me of my EX Husband. ICK. - KNEW Phil couldn't resist rolling off his Creds. Smashing his BS Ego must have made her week! Best moment w/Donahue I've ever seen.
Those complaining about Donahue - she is totally engaged in the questions, very candid, sharing things she never shared before, funny and insightful. He knew what he was doing.
I think Phil saying “I accept your scolding”! is amazing! And I think he handled it brilliantly! C’mon, props to the guy! He calms her by responding to the scold with excellent support of his bringing it up and continues right along. Funny how we get to a certain age, we see it with our parents and grandparents, and at some point we just think we can get after anyone considerably younger and say whatever we want and we do get away with it! I can’t wait to be Katharine Hepburn(ish)! ;)
I think KH quite enjoyed PD as an interviewer (except when she thought he was taking a dig at Spencer). She looked intrigued and amused, which was adorable to watch. To me, after a point they seemed genuinely fascinated with each other. I’d go as far as to say they were flirting a bit at the end 😂
I thought this was a terrible interview. Thought he was very rude to her. She should have stopped the interview. She didn’t need to sit and listen to his ridicule. He was so very disrespectful. She is a wonderful lady. I just love, her. She is so very honest and funny!
A real interesting interview, Donahue asked interesting questions, that most interviewers don't do,enjoyed her movies, think she was a good actress, she had true liberal democratic political beliefs, not surprising Hollywood or Hollyweird is very political (liberal )and expects that adherence of it's actors and actresses.
She was a wonderful actress, her body of work is amazing. I loved her in Guess Who's Coming To Dinner. She also was an opinionated, strong person. I really believe not an easy person to get along with. I don't think she ever got married. Jane Fonda does not have fond memory of hers when they made 'On Golden Pond'. By the way, Jane makes a great impersonation of hers.
How Donahue ever became as popular as he did, I have absolutely no idea. He had the personality of a wet mop, and even less tact. Like, dude, what's with the yelling? She's sitting less than a foot away from you. The end was hilarious though. "Okay, I'll sign it. What's your name?" "Geraldo Rivera" LMAO
Love her too bits, And Phil was terribly rude to her in some of the Questions but she held her own.. Very talented actress.. God bless her... R.I.P. Darl'in
Kate Hepburn is my favorite actress of all time. Since her book was already out, his questions were fair game. The interview was hilarious when she insisted he was not Phil Donahue. I have seen all her interviews, this was by far the most interesting. I just love her personality....I have seen all her movies except for The Corn is Green. I wonder what the reason was why she wrote the book since she highly valued her privacy....especially about her relationship with Spencer.
I would say Cindy that even though Ms Herburn was a winner of 4 oscars and made so many movies they were made at a time when the studio paid a wage/salary, before the days when actors received royalties etc.. I would say Ms Hepburn wrote the book for the money... I agree with you.. she is may favourite actress of all time a true lady a true woman of intellect and humour.. The best actor man or woman to ever be in the lights ever...
This lady was the best thing that hollywood put out a legend in her lifetime, she and ST were perfect together even though he was married to someone else they were friends for years.... what is wrong with a single woman who is friends with a married man
I love how Katharine keeps her composure and continues to say “yes”’and sticks to her guns. “Does that shock you”…”is that wrong?” Ha ha I think she was fab!
This is best interview I've ever seen Donahue give. I usually didn't like his interviews, all the interruptions. But here I think the flow is good. Clearly they're enjoying one another, the banter, the faux offenses. They're both absolutely adorable here.
@@damianop100 Agreed. Sometimes the most challenging interviewers are the best at bringing out interesting colours and shades; there certainly is a difference between an antagonistic and a challenging interviewer.
I love how she says why don't they look at the children who don't have anything who don't have any support who don't have any food. But these anti-choice people just want to control they don't want to help
For all his phony piousness, Donahue shows his true colors with the name thing. The only interview to beat this one was Ayn Rand’s imo. She really checked him multiple times in both segments.
Donahue’s interview style is so aggressive it reminds me of how a lawyer might question a witness on the stand. It sometimes leads to some interesting answers from his subjects but boy can it be hard to watch. Hepburn was certainly more than capable to hold her own in the face of such an abrasive, perhaps tactless, approach nonetheless.
She's out of his League - in fact, he embodies all the egotistical qualities of "Hollywood" she shunned - Phil should have done his Homework & left his "clever Showbiz Tricks" at home. He's right up there with Dr. Phil - bleeech!!
This could only happen to Phil Donahue. Out of all the interviews I have watched about Katherine Hepburn, this is the one and only. Mr. Donahue has such charisma. He had Ms. Hepburn so flustered. Very charming the way he got her to open up with many private moments. She was not an easy person to interview. However, he captured the real Ms. Hepburn. I would like to see the interview when he meet his wife Marlo Thomas. This was great. God Bless 🌷🌹🌹🙏
GingerD. Donahue deserved a kick in the ass for his insolence and I would love to have been the one to undertake that task. A total jerk if ever there was one.
I dont think his questions were impolite, on the contrary they are logical but his character , his style and the way he says things is very insulting, and irritating no wonder she snapped and felt threatened . You see thats what makes a difference between a bad interviewer and a legendary one, between just plain stupid and sharp wit ,the way you put words together accompanied by a perfect attitude.
20:25 ... i wonder if she knew how pathetic the interviewer would be, same time I wonder if he knows how pathetic and ordinary the common audience is when it comes to partnerships, so that he formed his point of view according to a general public being attached to a broad opinion what is "normal".... it's so strange to attend this interview with Katharine Hep being so cool and down to the ground even with facing the most stubborn questions.....
Ugh! He was so angry & judgmental I don't know how she kept from walking out of the room - other than the fact that she seemed utterly amused at his shock & awe over her life choices.
