When trying to get an outline you can use solidify modifier and then check the flip normals box, uncheck the fill rim box, apply the modifier, select the top layer and colour it black for a more accurate / smooth outline. It also helps because then the weights from the character would be copied to the black mesh

+Antonio Garcia that's a really elegant solution! I'll give it a shot next time :) Thanks!

+Antonio Garcia Would that make the same result?
@soranin9017

kevintrackmania it would but since its through the solidify modifier it would be cleaner and more accurate, less jagged too for the most part

Hi Dillon How did you parent the brash with cats, did you parent the brush to the kat hand, or the hand to the brush... On hand did you use IK or FK hand. A Im stuck trying to animate a character fighting holding a spear, spear move from one hand to another, and at some point both hands are holding a spear.. Help please..

Thanks for this interesting commentary! I'm going to learn animation because I have 2 "Monty-Style" projects in mind I want to realize (but I'm still in the character modeling phase for the 3rd character) and this will be really useful even if I'm probably go whith Maya! (for modeling I'm using 3dsMax & Zbrush). And about 3D models I'd like to ask your opinion about the modeling character pose..what do you think is better for shoulder rigging? (T-Pose? 45° angle?other angle?) I think I saw that for rwby characters it has been used the classic T-Pose but I'd really like to listen what's your own opinion about this matter :) Anyway please keep making these "making of" Dillon! P.S. Can't wait to see Project Monty done (and its commentaries ofc ) :D

Hey Dillon, big fan man. Actually needed to model a cat my self and thought of your katsu. Almost done modeling the body on maya, but I know this thing is going to run into some major pitfalls with the mesh before I attempt to rig it regardless of the program. Could you possibly do another video in the future where you show us your thought process on making a nice clean riggable mesh? Thank you!

what helped you get started in blender? can you piont me in the direction of the tutorials that helped you get started? also i love your work :P ... PS shane newville pointed me in your direction, he said that you could possibly be a great help in my quest to make a great fighting animation :)

Hi Dillon! I've been using Autodesk Maya for almost a year and i'have been really into Blender, im reallly impressed with all the things you can do with this program, i really like it but i don't know if i should give it a try and learn Blender, because i think that it's as powerful as Maya and in some aspects looks even better than it, for example, modeling, you have a lot more freedom, there are a lot more useful tools, or at least, it seems like that for me. All in all, do you recommend me give it a try? I'd highly appreciate your response, thanks for your time!

+Max Creations go for it! It's free so there's no harm :) and the great thing about modeling is that you can easily export it to Maya for animation. So no harm done!

As a maya "solid" user.. i'd like to know how you feel about maya's superiority (or blender's superiority) in some aspects :) i'm currently trying to get into blender's workflow since i'm no longer bound to maya.. but it's proving to be an unnecessary step (since i'm not the one paying for the actual program). so is there a reason "good enough" to learn a new software in this case? ps: how many times is this timelapse sped up? i'd like to watch it in rael time ;) thank you for your awesome work in this video and all previous ones ..

+BunnyMaz Good question! I'm hoping to make a video in the future comparing the two softwares because personally I think both have their benefits, but I much prefer Blender. I think the biggest advantage to Blender over Maya is its speed and efficiency in navigation and transformation. Hotkey hotkey hotkeys everywhere. Far faster than working in Maya by far. In terms of the speed up...it's sped up a lot. Haha, no exact numbers. It's about 6 weeks of footage, though, so watching it in real time might take a while.

Your video is really helpful and very inspiring! I have some additional questions after watching it, may you answer these? 1.) Did you rig the cat(s) and it's conrols all by yourself? They look really complex! Or did you use rigify or something similar? 2.) When you animate, do you use curves alot? I tried to focus on that in your timlapse and it seems that you only use it from time to time to correct yourself (which would be relieving^^). In my latest short movie i didn't use curves at all and still got some good looking results...but it still feels wrong. I find curves to be very hard to work with, confusing and a timekiller. How important are curves for the animation process? How often do you use them? 3.) Where/how did you learn animating characters and how long did you spend learning until you were good enough to create animated movies like that? Again thanks and it would be very kind from you if you answer these questions. It would help me alot!

Hey man! Really good questions! 1. I rigged them from scratch, no rigify! 2. I actually don't. I use them very minimally, because Blender's Dopesheet is so powerful already. The graph editor is reserved only for very minor tweaks. 3. I started learning CG 5 years ago, and less than that when I uploaded this short :)

Wow point2 is really interesting! I always thought i did something wrong because i am using it so rarely, too. Good to hear, thanks for the answers :)
