I decided to buy a shop apron from Jonathan Katz-Moses. In this video I’ll share my first impressions and what I have put in the apron pockets. Hopefully this may be helpful to some of you who bought one of these aprons from Jonathan or are thinking of buying a Katz-Moses Apron. Even if you aren't the tools I have in my apron are handy tools to have in your apron or in your shop.

One thing I've found to be super handy for mine is a Morakniv chisel knife. It's only about 15$ so you can abuse it. Comes with a plastic sheath and fits real nicely in the far right pocket.

Jeffery - That’s a great idea. That’s one I’m not familiar with but will check it out. I’ve been thinking of adding one of the Fast Cap Folding Chisels to my apron but haven’t bought it yet. One is even sitting in my Amazon cart waiting for me.

The left hand version is not really left handed, rear snap buckle is on the right side. 2 smaller pockets remain on the right side. I am very disappointed with mine.
@wb_finewoodworking
@wb_finewoodworking Год назад
That’s interesting. I just looked at the photos and noticed the small pocket arrangement is clearly shown but didn’t even think about the issue of the rear snap. I can see that really being a problem. Perhaps your comment here will be seen by some left handlers. Thanks for your comment.

Cool to hear the story about the hammer. I have yet to see the need for an apron, but I do like to wear pants will lots of pockets, so maybe I just need to try one out for a while and see if I like it. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the comment Grant. I won’t wear the apron all the time in the shop but I’ve already found it to be handy. Having things I use all the time handy rather than having to go get them and put them back has proved to be helpful already. It’s just another step toward my shop organization project. I’ll have to see over time how often I wear it and if it remains handy. Since the apron was less than $40 US I thought it was worth a try. I thought people like you would like the story about the hammer. I can remember my dad using it in his shop. BTW - I always wear “cargo” pants because I need one of the side pockets for my cell phone and I use the other side for my wallet. I hate sitting on it in a back pocket. So I also wear pants with big pockets.

Note install 2 brass rivets on eather side of your ruler, it won't get deformed and it has pressure on the ruler.

Thanks Don! I got my K-M Apron a while ago, and have the same problem with the ruler! I was thinking of adding a leather pouch next to the marking knife, but now I think that would actually be more in the way of the pocket. I think instead I’m going to do a leather pouch riveted somewhere on the right side and add a magnet. I just want to make sure the pocket won’t make the ruler stab me all day! I’ll let you know when the leather comes in what I’ve come up with. I’ve never done leather work before... should be quite fun to figure it out! Thanks for the great video! Let me know about the pencils. I may need to add those to my pockets! :).

Hi Sandy. I’m glad the video helped. I think adding a small rare earth magnet to the pocket would work. Even using epoxy might keep it in place. If I didn’t have my pacemaker I’d try that first. It could be pealed off later if it doesn’t work. If you do add a leather pocket for the ruler I’d love to see what you do. My email address can be found on my website (www.WBFineWoodworking.com). I linked to the original video that Jonathan produced showing how he added the leather to his original apron. It should help. You’ll also need a leather work kit and rivets. They can all be found on Amazon. I plan to do a video comparing the Pica and Dixon pencils as soon as I can. This week our new puppy has kept me very busy and out of the shop most of the week. I did use the Sewline white mechanical pencil on some walnut last week. I really liked it compared to the other white pencils I’ve used. Unlike the white pencils that have to be sharpened in a pencil sharpener the lead didn’t break easily. It has finer lead than the Pica white lead so will be helpful where a finer line is needed. I plan to produce a video on it as well.

Behind your ruler place a piece of harness leather to take up space, for your little tape same leather cross strap pouch with 3 rivets this way you push up with your ring and middle finger out it comes positioned to use. Have fun I do.

Great vid. I was thinking on contacting the maker of the apron and see if they could do something with an additional picket with a magnet or something.. I had to buy from K-M an extension belt. Got bit of a tummy. LOL..I am going to check out the rest of your channel.

Michael, thanks for watching. In my video I referred to Johnathon’s original apron video where he added the leather to his original apron. I’m still planning on adding some leather to my apron but just haven’t had the time to do it nor have I bought the leather working tools I need. It just hasn’t been a priority. If the company says they’ll add a pocket to your apron please let me know.

Wow, so many pockets I would forget where everything was. I particularly like you Pica and Dixon pencils. I thought you were only getting one new dog. I see 4 puppies there
@wb_finewoodworking
@wb_finewoodworking 3 года назад
Hi Pascal, first of all the puppy video is from a former litter. Yes, we just got one new girl. 😃 I agree on the number of pockets but remembering where things are isn’t too difficult. If things move around that’s fine too. Whenever I get a chance to get back out in my shop a video comparing the Pica and Dixon pencils is on my agenda. They are called “deep hole” pencils because they are thin enough to fit into holes for more accurate marking. I bought them partly because of the sleeve design. It’s easier to remember to put them back where they belong. Both also have very handy sharpeners. From what I understand both brands are used a lot by carpenters but some of the refills available for them are for different surfaces like metal and brick.

For the little ruler, you could sew an elastic fabric band to the apron and put it through to hold it tight. Think of a case for tools that have the elastic band to hold tools in a specific position... similar concept on the apron. Hope this helps

Check out Taylor Toolworks, they offer blemished PEC tools. You can find double squares, tri squares, rulers, etc for really cheap. The blemishes are minor and do not effect function. Be careful with the Incra, the ruler portion can easily bend/crimp. If you are leaning against something it may damage the ruler.
@wb_finewoodworking
@wb_finewoodworking 3 года назад
Terry, thanks for the suggestion. I’m very familiar with Taylor Toolworks and their blem tools. One is on my list of tools I want to buy but near the tip right now. The Craftsman I’m currently using is very accurate and is serving my needs right now. I appreciate the warning about the Incra ruler. Fortunately I don’t tend to lean against things when wearing the apron but will keep your warning in mind. Thank you for watching and your comments.

@@wb_finewoodworking have you tried the 3M Cubitron? I grabbed a sample 15 pack and love the stuff. Removes material quickly and has great longevity. My other tool "go to" is Banggood. They are based in China and make some good stuff. Dennis from "Hooked on Wood", also a RU-vidr, has a great series doing reviews on their tools.
@wb_finewoodworking
@wb_finewoodworking 3 года назад
@@terrmaso I have not yet tried the 3M Cubitron discs for my Festool sander yet but plan to try some whenever I get low on a grit of my Festool discs. For now I have an abundant supply of the Festool. I know that Taylor Tools has been pushing the Cubitron discs with the help of Stumpy Nubs and others. They even offered a sample pack but I never remembered to get one. As for Banggood I am well aware of them and used to get their emails. I never saw anything I thought I really needed and sort of got turned off by their cheap ripoffs of Woodpeckers tools. While I’m not a great fan of Woodpeckers and don’t have a lot of their tools but it just rubs me wrong when I see another company literally stealing their ideas.

Silly question. Is this considered the “right handed” version of the apron?
@wb_finewoodworking
@wb_finewoodworking 2 года назад
David, actually that’s not a silly question. Yes, this is the right handed version. Jonathan does sell a left handed version due the the pocket for the tri-square.

What about adding a small leather pouch down low, one on each side. I like an apron to keep my clothes cleaner but dont really like too many tools hanging in front near my work or rotating equipment. Sometimes i wear my apron with my small tool belt with a pouch on each side and baggy type pouch in the rear for larger tools or even my glue bottle on occasion. Also its easier to squat down when tool pocket are on side and not in front which causes broken pencil leads and tools dumped out of pockets onto floor. I hate when that happens. It wasnt a problem earlier in life when my belly was flatter, but I do like my Blue Bell and we'll just leave it at that!!! M L Rogers Pasadena TX

Thank you for the comment and suggestion. I need to make it clear that I don’t use this apron when working at machines. It’s used mostly when I’m using hand tools. I have another leather apron without pockets to use around the machines, especially the lathe.

Forget all magnetic additions, putting on or taking off will eventually come close to your pace maker. The lack of magnetic convenience is worth the extra time the pacemakers give us.
@wb_finewoodworking
@wb_finewoodworking 2 года назад
That may be true. Fortunately for me my pacemaker is mostly in case I suddenly need a defibrillator. It doesn’t help keep a steady beat.

So much stupid crap and pockets to catch saw dust. All I need is a pencil pocket, a ruler pocket and a functional clip/pocket for a tape measure. Nobody who wears an apron for more than fashion has a hammer in it. All this extra crap just gets in the way.
