After the suppression of Bulgarian April Uprising in 1876 nearly 100,000 were put to death, men, women, children... A year later many came to fight for those who can not protect themselves, and to help those who need help. What is known as Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878). And the Finns were among them. The Finnish Guards' Rifle Battalion, of nearly 1000. They distinguished themselves in the battle of Gorni Dubnjak, when the Finns were the ones, who finally get over the walls of the fort. Gorni Dubnjak were a fortified stronghold, ensuring supply route for besieged Turkish army of 70000 strong at Pleven. So it was vital to take it, and finish the encirclement. Yeah most Finns dont want to think about things before independence for obvious reasons (600 years of opression), since our real history began in 1917 most people want to remember only times after it.
@@mlgsty8880 And it's not even about wanting always, in school we aren't taught about our military contributions during the Russian rule at all. We are taught about the Hakkapeliitta during the Swedish rule but nothing about the Russian rule.
Personally i love finnish history. To have seen the finns fight the soviets, winning against all odds. Truly inspiring. It reminds me of my home-countries own fight against the soviets dubbed, "miracle on the vistula". Know that there are other countries who remember the valour of the finns, or at least, that Poland remembers.
Interitus The Finno-Russo wars were a defensive-victory for us finns, and a tactical one for the soviets. The soviets did win(tough it was a bitter victory), but we got to keep our independence(thanks to our veterans) and that's what matters.

Today is the National holiday of Bulgaria - liberation day. We celebrate 140 years of freedom. We would not have it without the many brave men who fought for our freedom. Before stumbling onto this song's comment section in RU-vid, I had no idea Finns were kept to such high regard in Bulgaria because of history. Apparently, basic education all the way to high school focuses too much on the colonization period of Sweden. And I'm sorry things are like that in Bulgaria. But don't let the international press fool you into thinking Finland is a paradise. We have corruption as well; we have just been so dutiful in our trust of bureaucrats for decades, we haven't recognized it as such. The culture of military marches is absolutely fascinating and creates a fantastic mythology of things to study. This is one of my favorite military marches.
This march is one of many great Finnish ones that exist. Other good ones are Jääkärimarssi, Vapautussoturin valloituslaulu (which has the same instrumental as this march but different lyrics) and Hakkapeliittain marssi.
@@gregoryfilin8040 "Porilaisten marssi" is that kind of march that gets straight to the point (no slow starts) and gets stuck in your head. I recommend. It has an instrumental and singed version.

Eastern Europeans are a lot more patriotic than western Europeans, for the simple reason that there's no powerful enemy menacing western Europe as Russia menaces eastern Europe.

We are a proud yet humble people, a few years back I would have found it difficult to believe that I could find Americans who know what the winter war and the continuation war were. We hardly ever expect the world to sing in our praise, hell, if you could ask the ghosts of our dead heroes what they think about the whole thing, they'd probably say, in a very traditional Finnish manner that they were just doing their job.

BTW I've just finished reading Mannerheim's memoires... even got my grandma to read it (she is a former Soviet history teacher). Most of the things about the Winter war etc were not taught in USSR, and now she actually started respect Finland even more. Like she said: "Finns sacrificed a lot of their lives, for their freedom". Count on me when it comes to economy. I'll support you the best way I can finns. I've actually tried to mobilize the masses to become more Finland-friendly and to buy more finnish wares. Especially since I saw the speech on YLE made by the finnish prime minister in 2015. What's good for you is good for us as well, simple logics. But also I have veterans in my family thats fought and died for Finland for many times, and by honoring their names and their deeds I will also support you for that reason. The vowels Greek has are like the Finnish ones, just we Finns have 3 more, and they can be short of long, which can change the meaning. Well, the y sound was in the Classical Greek, the ä is like the English words hAt or dAd ('hät, dääd'). the ö you could say as the English wOrk, stIR, hEArd ('wöörk, stöör, höörd'). It's not exactly the same, but we hear that as th Finnish ö. Which is said in the same place as e in bEt, just with rounded lips. Like German Göthe ('Gööt(t)e'), or French bleu ('blöö').
My grand grand father fought trough both of the wars in Finland at WW2. And it’s a thing that when you go to war you don’t come back as the same person.he didn’t ever talk about the war. And when he did he said only maybe two words like once when he was asked he said:Tapoin ja kuiskasin ruumiita=I killed and buried the corpses. And he almost never had a good night sleep.😢

As a Russian, it is hard for me to believe that we, Russians and Finns, once fought together against a common enemy. And it hurts me to watch what is happening between us now. I hope peace will come again.
