Great review, guys. I've had this expression over the years from dozens of casks and years. I can tell you that it is helpful to get some information on a particular cask number before purchasing because the balance you talk of in this dram can be off or missing making it just so-so (score 82 -92). They source the casks from Spain and barrique means 'little barrel' , hence the low bottle yield (in addition to the evaporation) in comparison to the other solists.
Hey Mike & Dustin. Great review. Btw Not this bottle but That particular single cask 😉 Kavalan recommendation we spoke about arrived a couple weeks back. Just amazing. So complex Rich & deep. I got A Ton of Chinese 5 spiced hoisin crispy duck. Plenty of sweet dry oak , old leather & musty sawn wood & that hit of 80% Dark chocolate on the finish. It’s a peach! So Thanks for the shout Dustin. 👌slainte 🥃
I just tried this at a little sushi joint. The longer it sat in the glass the more I thought Sherry finish. If you ever had the base Kavalan, it’s that plus the 15% ABV and a Sherry finish…fantastic, but not complex as you said. Great review!
@@topshelfdustin3060 I'm interested to see how those awards turn out. I really respect Ralfy's opinion. The Vinho Barrique reminds me a lot of Glendronach 18 (which is a huge compliment, especially for a 5? year old whisky.) I'm interested to see how it'll change over the next month.
@@delinquentflair Well, he's part of organizing it but he is just one vote himself. I find the crowd sourced results a bit...difficult to use, but I love the idea. I'm sure it will improve with time.
This sounds great! You guys changed the name. I like it. The whiskies you review really are top shelf and it is a nice tip of the hat to Justin always participating :)
Jeffrey, was good meeting you yesterday. With kavalan, highly recommend looking for single casks from overseas. Great prices and some of the best bottles out there.
You guys review here makes me get this one as a must buy. Wow $180 is the best price I have heard in my search. Can you possibly provide me the name or link to the store?........Great review...Cheers!
The Fino I tried was excellent but expensive as you mentioned. These do tend to sit on shelves and do get sharply discounted at times. Keeps your eye open.
@@LitoCortes If you can get it for 300ish, I'd say do it. 350 is likely a buy but after that....you can old out for better prices I think. My penny of thought. And based on the market i see.
I mean that sounds lovely. One thing I did learn in college. Root beer and Captain Morgans SOUNDS good together. It's terrible. Cheers and happy drinking.
You've said that before quig, I'm a bit surprised as mike, keith, and I loved the sherry cask. I hope that was just a bad cask and your future offerings will be better. Not sure about costs in your area, but some of their "lesser" offerings such as the bourbon cask are pretty tasty too. and at least here pretty reasonable, well under half their one's price.
We've reviewed a few other Kavalan's here, the moscatel is the best of those we've reviewed. The real gem's as mike alluded to are their picks which are outstanding based on what we've had and priced almost comically better.
I wonder if you got one that was aged a bit too long? I've had 4-5 of these now and they really do have big variance. Never had one get too bitter, but I did have a bourbon soloist that was starting to get a bit too tannic so I could see that. These are generally younger which might be for a reason, maybe they get bitter with too much age.
@@topshelfdustin3060 I was also surprised, but I just drank it again, the first cup was very bitter, and then the bitterness became less obvious, the aftertaste was long but not oily, BTW it's 57.1% 2014/01/08 into the barrel It is 3200NTD(105USD)in Taiwan I suspect they sell all the good quality bottles abroad 😂
