Some Ninja 1000 and Z1000 owners have an issue with a dry clutch causing noise, chattering and inconsistent engagement. This mod was given as the answer but was never clearly detailed. Follow this 4 part log and you can do this as well. It has solved my chattering clutch issue. My 2011 Ninja 1000 with 10,000km would chatter and vibrate excessively when it was starting to get warm. It would do it sometimes when fully warm as well. I didn't modify the clutch rod, so far it seems fine without this part of the mod. Part 1 - Disassembly
Part 2 - Basket Drilling

Part 3 - Clutch re-assembly

Part 4 - Cover install, comments and antifreeze change

Had a machine shop drill the holes in the basket and replaced with new friction plates while I was in there, very smooth clutch now.

Great video! Thanks !!

Thats interesting. The dimples I suspect would reduce friction per plate and hold oil. I would look for that if I swap the clutch later.

Went for a ride yesterday, first run since November. Changed the oil to Ipone semi-synthetic. Ran great with the new oil. Even after sitting for months, clutch was flawless. Seemed quieter as well, could be because of the 10c degree day thickening the oil. Seems the right oil helps, I should have tried the oil first before diving into the fix. If anything, the work done will only help the clutch oiling and longevity.

I'm just going to replace the clutch basket with the '16 slipper clutch. I don't get the weird clutch hum problem all that often to bother otherwise.

I have a z1000 2014 and has 3800 km on it and Its hard to downshift by doing this to my bike will solve the problem ?

Not sure, I didn't notice a change in shifting, when the bike is warm, it has a crisper shift, more positive, not sure why. I find the Ninja has a "muddy" shifter, not like my Yamaha's that were very positive and well defined. I was having problems with clutch engagement, it was sticking and chattering, that was solved with the mod. I haven't tried a different oil, I'm due for a change in 500km so will see if it makes a difference. Still has the stuff the dealer put into it when I bought it used. I have IPone synthetic waiting to go in.

its need to dry the black oil first or can directly to pull out the cover?
@gaving4359

With the motorcycle on its side stand, the oil doesn't come out. You can leave the oil in while you do this.

Hello, Nice instructions. Can you provide the list of parts to replace? Thank you.

Clutch tool EBC CT004 @ $25 (or vice grip style), 3/8 drive metric socket set with extensions, 30mm socket and torque wrench. Other items are drill bit set, needle nose and electrician pliers. Power tools are not needed but make the work easier and faster.

I ment part numbers of the parts that need to be replaced.

I didn't replace any parts in this modification. The clutch cover gasket was in good condition so I reused it. I didn't replace the clutches or springs. Just in and out drilling the basket holes.

hi bro. nice video. it is same to open change clutch on z800?
@gaving4359

The parts look similar but there are differences. Not sure if the motors are the same or if the torque specs would be the same. It's a safe bet that it would be similar and could be done but you would have to expect some differences. Proceed at your own risk! Shop manual would be a definite asset here.

was this problem just on certain year models? I just picked up a 2014 yesterday. is this something I will need to look at?
@gaving4359

seems like all models before 2017 are affected. some say a change of oil to a semi synthetic solves the issue, others it just an issue. you will be able to tell, a chattering clutch when it starts to grab or poor shifting as the plates don't want to let go. if you have no issues, don't worry about it. if you do, try the oil change if it doesn't help this will.

yep I think I may have this problem. got my first real ride on today. after it was warmed up good I stopped and could hear something. I bent over the seat with my head down close the the clutch while the bike was running and I pulled the clutch a few times and heard the chatter almost like a clicking sound. it started fast as I pulled the lever and I could hear the clicking/chatter getting slower over a few seconds as the clutch engages. when I let the lever out I hear just a chatter. its two different sound between clutch in and clutch out.

I wonder if this is a basket design issue or the clutch plate design issue? would different brand plates solve this? has anyone tried?
@gaving4359
@gaving4359 7 лет назад
I did the mod because you could sometimes hear the chatter from 10 feet away! it also had clutch engagement problems, would not grab smoothly and would vibrate. The clutch is better now, still a little noisy but is safe and predictable.

I hear ya, I will get around to this sometime, I'll try the oil change and see if it helps any. who knows what oil the dealers put in used bikes. thanks

Not sure. I would check the part numbers on line. if they matched, they would likely be the same.
