Here is a video of me tearing off some components of the engine.
Thanks for stopping in!

You might be wondering, why the ZX7R? Why would you pick this as the first bike in your collection? When I was a kid, I had a toy motorcycle of this exact model. From that time, I fell in love with the Kawasaki green color and knew one day I would get one. The flared air intakes, dual headlights, and of course the Kawi green....doesn't get any better than that. A true CLASSIC SUPERBIKE!
Well, it's time to revive the 90's. Who's ready? :)

With the valve cover off, double check the timing chain rubber is still attached to the underside of the cover. They apparently like to fall off or just fall apart, drop into the pan, and then the chain rubs the two metal points where that rubber went. Found mine missing when I did a valve cover gasket job.

Maybe that’s what was broken off in my oil pan!

Will you do a video breaking down the timing and how to make sure everything's set up. Mind giving me a hell of a fight.😅

"I wish you had made this video 8 years ago when I bought my 99 zx-7r. After two days of riding, the second gear in the gearbox shattered. Your videos would have been useful back then, but thankfully I got the gears replaced and now, 8 years later, the same motorcycle is still in my garage and running just as well as before."🤗 Waiting part 8 🙈

There’s a plate behind the counter shaft, that’s the shaft that the sprocket is on. That plate will have to be removed to split the cases. The sprocket will be in the way of removal.

By the way, you’re going to have a hell of a time getting that front sprocket off w/out damaging the transmission. Also to get that gear out of there you only have to split the cases you don’t need to take the cylinder and cylinder head off.
@taylorjhaug
@taylorjhaug 2 года назад
What do you mean with the front sprocket? Also, I’ll look into that about the cylinder head. I’m just following what the service manual calls for!
@fr.mcgreer8349
@fr.mcgreer8349 Год назад
@@taylorjhaug The front sprocket should be removed before the engine is out when the chain is still on the sprocket. The chain acts as an anchor (also the rear brake) and you can undo the locknut without straining the gearbox.
@MirchiBoy
@MirchiBoy Год назад
@@fr.mcgreer8349 Can you throw the chain back on the sprocket and run it to the loose back wheel, have a buddy sit on the back wheel to act as the anchor then buzz the nut off with an impact?

Just watched each episode on the 7R. I get it - that you're not a mechanic and this a massive learning experience. I've watched you Learning the hard way! Bold wrong moves many times have made me cringe but you've been pretty transparent about the mess ups and what to learn from them. So fair play. It's pretty uncomfortable watching somebody skip steps that I know are gonna bite him in the ass and wallet shortly after. Seeing somebody so keen getting deeper and deeper out of any noon's safe depth is a real shame, then the build series goes dead for a year? Maaaaaaany rebuilds are gathering dust and rust exactly like this seems to be. Its easy to lose your way with a tricky project that suddenly gets much too big for your skillset and experience level and facilities. That's when it's time to ask for help and research and discuss a new game plan, staying open and honest about your lack of knowledge and experience. Join a strong forum or group dedicated to the specific type of bike you're struggling with. Fess up to the fuck ups. Share the problems and invite some much needed assistance... some wiser, older, crusty, grey haired, patient, interested guy's will step up and be happy to keep you dead right and get your stuck project back on track. I bet ya. I'm just such a guy on a few groups relating to all the bikes I've owned and worked on in racing. Get into the ZX7R community online and see what happens! The real bike community that this era ride comes from will be a saviour and restore your lost mojo to get your ninja kicking ass again.

Well you are not wrong, a lot of your points are spot on. However, it's not just that the project is difficult for me. Life is...LIFE. I have moved several times since this last video, 3 times in fact. So I have had to move my entire workshop 3 times over. With the purchase of a new home, a career change, and other projects to fund, you have to prioritize. I already have another motorcycle I ride daily. So yes it is a shame, but it doesn't mean I don't have intentions on finishing.

@@taylorjhaugjust saw your reach out for a bit of 7R guidance and help like I suggested. Good man. I got no notification you replied above, so that's me just checked back and found it... sounds like a ball breaker of a year man. Frustrations galore for sure! Hope you get a break and some smoother sailing for a change. Get your well written appeal copied and pasted into that forum that's been mentioned in the comments. Some goidvpics and set up an interesting thread to encourage advice. I'm sure it'll come good. There will defo be euro and UK 7R groups to hit as well if that US one isn't effective. Spread your bets buddy 😂. Glad it's back up on your to do list 🤘

You might look into putting the crank from the previous generation of the 7r, pre 96. Gives it a longer stroke, supposedly fits right in.

That engine is very close my older version. I had a 1991 and then a 93. Slight differences between them so 91/92 is one manual then a supplemental manual for 93-95, then your version was next but I never had your version so I’ve never seen the manual for yours. What am I driving at? I wonder if you need the previous manuals for complete picture of what to do. If you are going by some supplemental you may not have enough information. What manual are you using?
@taylorjhaug
@taylorjhaug 2 года назад
I’m using a service manual for all zx7r’s from 1996-2003, since they were all the same generation. It’s all been correct so far since I’ve been using it
