Kayak Fish Finder-12volt Portable Power Box-How To Build

In this video I demonstrate how to make a rugged/weather tight 12 volt power "Box" to use while Kayaking/Camping etc. I built this unit to supply power to my Lowrance Elite Fish Finder while Kayak Fishing, but the unit could be used for other practical purposes as well. Thank You for Watching. Please "Like" if you found the video useful.

Still looks like the best battery box build on RU-vid...or for sale really. Yes, now the Cellblok is available but I have a Hook9. I would rather buy yours. Good basic info in your video too, as I do forget things now and again. Thank you Sir.

I must thank you for this video! Your Fish Finder-12volt Portable Power Box video, inspired me and got me on the right track when building my own. The one I built is essential on every kayaking trip I do, always has my GPS, cellphone and GoPro batteries charged and ready to go! Thank you once again!

This is absolutely brilliant. Looking into an Elite-4x HDI for my kayak and wondering just how to power it. Very clean and very neat. I was gonna go with a single 12V battery but you've convinced me that it might be worth going with two. I paddle a Jackson Big Tuna so the extra weight is no problem.

this is exactly the build I was looking for, I think the only thing I'll change is to put the fishfinder mount on top of the box because I fish from am inflatable paddleboard and need things to be mostly self-contained. Excellent work, sir!

Great video! This is pretty much what I'm looking to build. One thing that I'd add is that you should not charge the batteries with the lid closed. Even though they are sealed batteries, they can still give off some gas. There's a warning right on the batteries. Thanks again for the video!

One thing to note is that if you were to use a charger above 8 amps the way that you have it set-up would not be a balance load, meaning that the nominal charge would be too much to go from one battery to another. To make it balance, the charger would have to be connected to the positive of one battery and the negative of the other battery while keeping the batteries in parallel. I think what you have done is fantastic. Thank you

Elegant design. Well thought out solution to kayak power. I will definitely source this idea as I build my own. just have sonar and red LED lights (to preserve night vision) so I don't need 2 7AH+ batteries, just one. Maybe, I just upgraded (ordered not installed) to a Humminbird 5 with DS and SI sonar + GPS and I expect the current draw is a lot more and I might need two batteries after all.

@Peter Laurence, I used the 3 wire plug and socket because it was readily available at sporting goods store, and I also use a small trolling motor from time to time that plugs into the same twist lock socket. You can get the boxes at Walmart. Actually I believe they are ammo boxes

Please show a close up and more explanation of how you put two leads on battery two. Those terminal clips are tiny. Also please show where the charging pigtail attaches. Does it bypass the fuse? What if you wire your trickle charger to the cigarette outlet and just plug it in there? Awesome build!
@pimpownzu
@pimpownzu 10 лет назад
He did show the wiring, then he went on to explain how the outlets were linked. The "hot lead" was the constant lead to the fish finder, which connects to the "cigarette port", which then connects to the "3 prong twist lock" outlet. (positive to positive & negatives to negatives.) The line then runs to the battery with the in-line 12 amp fuse. In the video, he charged the batteries using the 3 prong twist lock outlet, but I'm pretty confident you should be able to use the other two outlet as well. Although it's not original, these type of battery configurations are done on boats all the time, but I completely agree, it's a very clean professional-like solution worthy praises.
@jimmyrayblues
@jimmyrayblues 10 лет назад
@whitter... The second battery is connected with "double" Spade clips and then soldered. You can get them at most any electrical or car parts store. They will have a female end, and a male end together on same clip.

Hey great video. I'm trying to duplicate something like this for my kayak. I did have one question tho. If you hooked the charger up to a cigarette lighter instead of the three pronged plug. Would you be able to charge and plug in ur fish finder with the one cig port? Like just have one plug for both input and output or would this require different wiring?

Hello Jimmy Ray, wondering how long this battery set-up actually runs. Running time for running just your locator is how many hours. Wondering because I am going to build either one or two of these depending on your answer. I need it to last a week without being able to recharge the batteries. If I ran this unit for 10 hours a day would it really last 5 days? Sounds to good to be true. Thanks in advance for your answer.

Netos Trucking It Thank you for checking it out! I got the charger from a local electrical/electronics supply here in Hattiesburg MS. It is called N&H electronics 800-264-8808 | 601-582-5571. I will get the model of the charger that I got, and post on here for you
@jimmyrayblues
@jimmyrayblues 6 лет назад
Netos Trucking It Ok, sorry for the delay. The charger I went with is a TDC power, Mod. BCA-66-121500. It is 12v and 1.5 amps. The amperage is a little low on the output side of this charger (for 2 batteries) but it was cheaper, and I don't mind if it takes a little longer to charge. Don't use it everyday. It will completely charge those (2) batteries in about 1.5 days. But u can get a faster charge rate. Just tell them at N&H what u have, and they will help you decide.

+edawolf3000 From the prices he mentioned and the quality of the plugs $100 would be a steal and that is with very little labor cost and he could get more and it would be a Great deal. My electrical expertise stops at sticking a light plug in the wall so for me whatever he charged would be Outstanding! And I am not on commission either! LOL!

Nicolas Brousseau Yes and No...I have used mine for 3 straight days without recharging, and did not have an issue. Dont really know how much longer it would have went, but I did not have any trouble. I dont think I was ever getting a full charge before using that little wall charger.
