Kayak fishing offshore a deep water trench for Tope, Conger Eels & Bullhuss -
In this video I paddle out to the offshore trench between 1.5 - 2 miles off the north coast of the island to target Tope, Conger Eels & Bullhuss.
This was the first session of the year so I was slightly unsure how well it would go.
Recent weather conditions had been making things pretty difficult to get out and find somewhere reasonably sheltered from the strong winds.
I had a small window of good weather and perfect tides for an offshore session so I just decided to go for it even if I was nursing a slight hangover, I was itching to try and catch something big on the kayak.

I can remember when everyone said UK kayakers had to wear dry suits cos of hypothermia setting in waiting for the RNLI but these guys are hard core.

seems quite warm here regardless of the wind at the moment water temp wise it’s hotting up too. I love my dry suit but just so damn hot to wear it out paddling at the moment. The dry trousers are ok though I usually just chuck on a cag jacket or just a long sleeve Tshirt in the summer with some cag bottoms. thanks for watching !

thanks for watching mate. same happened to me on my first Kayak session trying for them last year so I thought I’d double the line a few inches above the hook. lido a video on how I make those traces at a later date buddy. it’s pretty simple to make though.

Absolutely class video. I sincerely hope you get more subs from this as that was awesome to watch. Really well made all round. I’ve a tarpon 120 so was interesting to view your 007 Q branch Viking moored aside too. Admiration for keeping 20-30 plus pounds of muscle wanting to abandon ship steady enough at times while a wee choppy sea bounces you about. Cheers for uploading buddy.

Glad you enjoyed it matey. it was a cracking day to be out once the conditions settled. ahh it’s not so bad for me now with handling them.. my first video I had a big one and it went nuts on my lap wasn’t fun. I think tiring them out a bit is the key thing to do.

Hello matey The one I was using was actually a new setup I got the other day it’s the ugly stick 20-30lbs elite. It’s actually a really nice blank on it mate feels perfect. The one I hand to my friend in the footage is the 12-20lbs rod bud. I only took the heavier setup with me just to see what it was like. I got the 20-30lbs setup for those day with bigger tides just to drop a heavier lead down to hold bottom. Thanks for watching !

oh you’ll have no issues with the 12-20lb matey they are perfect for it. the elite 20-30lbs feels more like a 12-20lb class rod though so it was still go fun and scrap from the fish.
