Thanks for making the video (and drilling a hole in your kayak for us). Quick tip.... use a thin aluminum wire mesh as the foundation before applying the plastic filler. The repair area needs to be warmed up (heat gun works) to allow the mesh to bond with the hull. You can then melt the material to the mesh. Put more than necessary then sand down with progressively finer grit sandpaper. Cheers!
@fishinwithish
@fishinwithish 2 года назад
Your welcome and I'm sure I'll have more holes to fill so I will look into the mesh.

Just a few notes for ya, Bud! 1) Use a very sharp or hot knife. Cut away excess damage clean and sand hole!! 2) If possible, get a 4-5 mm plastic! Cut for size and wedge in place! can help a lot. 3) used a small fan to blow nasty smoke away! A MUST! 2) Use cable ties as a welding rod!! It works really well for filling cracks and deep scratches 3) Leave overnight 4)Sand down ruff first, then smoother Grab some cheap Surfboard Wax to finnish. Don't get me wrong, you did a good job. I just hope to give you some food for thought.

You saved my ass. I took my kayak out for the first time since the ice has cleared. Got downriver and noticed the boat was getting sluggish and tippy. Got back to the landing and found I’d taken on about twenty gallons through a tear in the hull. I fish alone and have a tendency to scooch along the concrete landings like a dog with ass worms while seated in the kayak to get to open water. Apparently the combination of hard concrete, soft polyethylene and a fat slob doing aerobics trying to get launched took its toll. Thank you so much for showing me how to save my beloved kayak. Great informative video.

Drilling thru the kayak you just repaired takes dedication...lol. I fixed mine with 5 gallon bucket strips and a $9 Harbour Freight heat gun. I find plastic welding too tedious, the heat gun covers more area, I melted a bunch of strips on and sanded it down smooth. All that really doesn't matter if the end result is the same. Thanks for the video.

First of all I have to say thanks for this comment it pretty much made my day! I love hearing from people that I have helped in some way! Your comment is also kinda funny in the way of I literally just thought about possibly finding some beat up kayaks from different places to repair and possibly resell I think it could definitely be a lucrative business. But as for the repair it held up fairly well my skid plate or patch I added recently got ripped off on a crazy kayak trip and I believe I have an even better way to add the extra material to it when I find the time I am gonna make another video of this process again! Oh and if I'm out your way I'll take you up on that beer!

I prefer Stainless Steel screen cut oversize to start off the repair of HDPE. Melt it into base plastic all around the outside of the hole. Use a pencil soldering iron with a big flat tip. Best ones are sold for repairing plastic car bodies. Then melt in plastic all over the screen. Once you have it fully filled in and smooth, cap it with more screen. Melt it in all over the patch and melt more plastic over the top. Cracks, splits and small holes are a lot easier to fix this way compared to large wear areas. JB weld can be used in emergencies. And the stock slow cure two part epoxy holds about as well as their "plasticweld". Best chance is to rough scuff the surfaces and then very quickly "flame treat" the area to receive adhesive using the flame tip of a small propane or butane torch. You have to do this so fast you think it cant possibly have an effect. But it does. And you can embed screen or fiberglass into the patch. The only adhesive that seems to get a really good bond onto HDPE is 3M DP8005. Its only sold by industrial vendors like Grainger or McMaster Carr and should be used with a special dual pack applicator gun and mixing nozzle. Unfortunately its pretty expensive but has value to save expensive things like kayaks, automotive parts and custom polyethylene tanks used in boats and RV's.

It did work fairly well it did come off after a bunch of dragging and i'm going to change my tactic a little bit in a future video to make it even better. using smaller longer strips to get more of it welded and possibly use some super glue on the middle of the patch to help hold once the patch starts to wear down.
@HuyFishin
@HuyFishin 3 года назад
@@fishinwithish the areas you drag the kayak won’t fit a kayak cart?
@fishinwithish
@fishinwithish 3 года назад
@@HuyFishin well I also recently made a kayak cart out of pvc I may do a video on that also and it's cool but still kind of a hassle compared to just adding a patch of plastic. alot of the places I fish can either be very long drag or very steep and the added weight from wheels sucks and either walking the wheels back to truck or bringing wheels with me to fish is a pain.

This was hard to watch. All I can think of is no fingers can withstand the high heat. The last time I fixed a hole I used long metal pliers and a blaze torch. I held the plastic bottle cap above the hole and let it melt into the hole. It bonded on both inside and outside. Five years later the hole came back. I tried the same process. My advice: don't do it outside on a windy day. I held it too close to the hole and the hole GOT BIGGER. So this time I will use a stronger plastic and try putting a matrix under it so the liquid plastic will flow into it. You can do this in less than ten minutes. Then you can smooth it out either sandpaper or wave a torch gently over the surface to smooth the plastic.

I had it last a year of dragging my kayak everywhere and beating the crap out of my kayak n ended up getting a hole in it again not even in the same spot that I repaired. I have a good bit of fishin videos off this kayak since the original repair even taking it through some very sketchy white water scenarios. There are other methods I have discovered and in time I will show those also! Thanks for watchin!

Hey mate, cool guide. I have field and stream eagle run 13 with hole in the same spot. Came from me by self dragging over concrete and riprap being lazy cuz I thought it was indestructible. 5 months later how did this hold up?
@fishinwithish
@fishinwithish 3 года назад
So far I continue to drag this kayak over everything cause I am usually by myself and the extra patch I had added onto this had fell off which I'm not too surprised but the rest of the plastic weld is still holding up I check it about once a month and it's still going strong. With that said Id still like to find a way to add a extra patch that won't come off and someone else commented to use super glue on the inside of the patch and then also plastic weld the edges I'm gonna try that next.

How often do you get holes in your kayaks
@fishinwithish
@fishinwithish 2 года назад
Well recently i've made carts for my main kayaks which I havent gotten around to do a video just yet, but will be sometime in the near future. However before I made the carts basically about once a year I had to patch this one because I literally drug it everywhere its EXTREMELY heavy, and I would use it about 3 times a week. This year I have not used my kayaks nearly at all because of my back issues and most recently breaking my arm, but I have been ramping up my kayaking again because my back and arm are getting much better. I also have some ideas im going to try out to make it last even longer once I have to patch this one again it will be a video.
