Kayak Seat Height. Easier to Roll vs Balance.

Kayak seat height is often very overlooked but can make a huge impact on how our boat performs. Higher seats make your boat easier to roll, give greater leverage which can make it easy to throw your boat around, surf, turn and manoeuvre. The flip side of that is that it will also make your boat less balanced so if tipping over for like no reason is an issue for you then check your seat height!

I just spent my first day in my new Dagger Rewind. It came with a 1/2" thick foam seat pad. I put it in and it felt super comfy. 30 seconds on the water and I pulled it out, the boat felt super tippy. I'm 5'8", 165 lbs. 30: inseam. I've got kind of short legs and a longer torso.

Sounds like you are gonna try a little lower and see what you like on the next run. Remember the trade off for stability is leverage so roll MAY get harder when stability improves. Not definitively though. Depends on you

I just dropped some sweet cheeks in my creeker and it's like a new boat. I was having serious trouble rolling & controlling it and couldn't figure out why. I guess I was way too low. Being up an inch makes it super responsive and easy to roll. Thanks for the video.

So stoked it worked for you, thanks for checking out the video. Let me know if you are struggling with anything else

The additional leverage- I guess we’re talking about increasing power for squirts, double pumps, etc? Great video, BTW.

Don't really do freestyle but it was still nice

Same applies for any whitewater boat, the higher you are the more leverage and less balance you have and vice versa. Thanks for checking it out.

Yeah, @ 6'3" / 205 / 36 inseam / Sz 12 - I added a "200 Sweet Cheeks" on top of the 100 already in place to my Rockstar 4.0 (per the, a-hem, designer's suggestion) and boy did that boat suddenly fit great...knee pockets perfectly aligned, plenty of legroom, feet so comfy. BUT THEN - the boat became a super-tweaky, confidence destroying handful. So I went back to the "100 Sweet Cheeks" alone and felt so "planted" in the boat, that's what I use now.

Similar thing here. I'm a long but thin boi, so I was having some trouble throwing down, so chucked in some foam. Became too tippy, so I took it out. Got better with the extra foam tho, so was better than pre foam, but just as stable as prefoam

finding the perfect seat height is for sure a longer process of trial and error than is ideal, especially at first. It gets easier!

Now that is a great result!

As a tall man I am looking more for lowering methods. Any recommendation?

Probably remove the pad that comes in it. Not sure if you can go lower than the seat. Probably worthwhile working on some balance and edge control drills if you can’t get lower.

My primary creeker is the M Nirvana. Every once in a while my leg pops out of the thigh brace forcing me to reposition it. Any suggestions? Shims under front part of seat? Foot block adjustment? Other outfitting? Jackson doesn't have aggressive thigh braces and I love the boat.

This happens when things get rowdy and I'm usually getting flipped, so my repositioning has to happen while I'm upside down. It is not a regular occurrence, so I think a minor adjustment will fix the problem. Thanks for any advice that you may have Seth!

Two things you can try. 1: tighten up your foot rest and your back band. This has the effect of forcing your knees up into the thigh grip. Check out my video “outfitting hack for Jackson footrests” that gives my best tricks on getting a tight fit. The second thing (and this doesn’t apply to everyone but ALOT of people): the reason why your thighs come away from the grips is because your legs are no longer under tension. This means you are sub consciously or consciously letting your legs relax so just focus on active legs and feet and you should stop seeing this happen to you. There may or may not also be an outfitting solution in the pipeline from Jackson later this year. But that may just be a rumour.

@@SethAshworth thanks for the tips!!! I will definitely make those adjustments and focus on continuously engaging legs/core. I didn't think backband could play into this but makes a ton of sense that it does. I also don't typically make my backband really tight, with the thought that I toghten it enough for support but if I have good posture I shouldn't need to rely on it to drive the boat. Will tighten from here on out! I also must relax my legs and core a bit from time to time as you said, causing loss of engagement and likely leading to the flip where the leg finally pops out. SYOTR!
