Kayaker vs. Log???

For those that watched the last episode of our Deep River expedition this will look familiar. I wanted to highlight this because it's a very important lesson that we can all learn from. Logs, strainers, and really any river debris should be given a wide berth for good reason. Fortune was on my side this particular day but not because of anything I did. I hope this helps give some perspective on why we should respect the river and understand that it will always get the last vote in what happens. Good times!

Thanks for sharing this. In some ways it's a more powerful lesson of the danger from trees than seeing one in a more dramatic situation. Seeing how quickly this got dangerous at this flow level is going to make me show even more respect to those river trees.

Absolutely! The "calm" river can be deceiving. Even in calmer waters, I've heard of incidents with trees that had a bad outcome. The river will always demand respect. Thanks for watching!

The power of water is crazy. Good video, a big reminder to be safe and avoid these areas. Life is more important then ego
@SideTrailAdventures
@SideTrailAdventures 2 года назад
Yes indeed sir! I think ego is something we all battle with to varying degrees. There's a fine balance between pushing your limits and knowing when you've reach the edge of them. Knowing that line is often a challenge for me. Thanks for watching!

One day I decided to kayak from the Faith Rock area in Franklinville down to the Ramseur dam. By myself, without fully scouting, and I hit a rock sideways and leaned upstream. My boat was suddenly underwater and pinned between the rock and water flow in seconds. I had to stand in the flowing river a while to rescue it. So pretty much all the things you’re not supposed to do. 😅 Thankfully all came out OK, but whew - lessons learned the hard way! Thanks for sharing!
@SideTrailAdventures

Yeah, once the water catches that upstream edge, the laws of physics are not in your favor 😂 It seems we're only able to learn lessons the hard way right? Thanks for watching!

How guickly something can happen,glad it turned out well ,amazing the power of the water even when it looks easy.

If I'd had more skill, it's likely there would've been a different outcome but no less reason to appreciate the river's power, even in a "smoother" section. Thanks for watching!

It's something we all hear about and I'm guilty of sometimes seeing debris and thinking "that doesn't look so bad". Looks are obviously deceiving. Lesson learned for sure. Thanks for watching!

There is no one on the water that I trust more than Pete. I'm positive that if I had gotten stuck under that log, I still would've gone home at the end of the day because of Pete. There is no better crew😎👍. Thanks for watching!

Been there, but fortunately the current was a little less, so I was able to lean into the obstacle to avoid going under, but it was touch an go. It is a creepy feeling when you feel the kayak is wanting to roll on you and you don't know what is under the surface.

Agreed...not a good feeling at all going under like that. Glad you were able to recover during your experience! Thanks for watching!

Sweepers will kill you! Sort of counter intuitive but best to lean INTO the log if you can’t avoid, rather than neutral or leaning upstream. The water then flows under the hull and will buoy you up instead of roll you under. Of course, best to do whatever it takes to avoid altogether.
@SideTrailAdventures
@SideTrailAdventures 2 года назад
You're exactly right and exactly what was in my head as a plan to make it out of that predicament. I just failed in the execution and the current caught that right edge before I could edge the boat. Lot of lessons learned. Thanks for watching!

Sweepers are no joke. I pulled a kid out of one three years ago that was tubing down a lazilly flowing river, until he got sideways against it and it very quickly took him down.
@SideTrailAdventures

The lazy flowing rivers give a false sense of security for sure. Glad you were able to help!

@@SideTrailAdventures 8 year old kid on his own 300ft from drunk mom. They were all laughing until he started gettibg pulled. Then it turned serious. Kid got lucky thay day as mom was wider than she was tall and would have been of no assistance. Was only 5ft deep but wpuld have been plenty to do that kid in for good.

If you would not have landed in that small pocket that was above the water you would have been fine,but you slipped rt into that pocket and away you went.
