Caterpillar cakes first appeared about 30 years ago when Marks and Spencer introduced their Colin the Caterpillar cake. Since then, many a child's birthday party has featured a Colin the Caterpillar cake and most of the major supermarkets have created their own version. A caterpillar cake is basically a chocolate swiss roll coated with ganache and studded with sweets like Smarties or M & Ms. There's also a face and feet made from some kind of icing.
