Season 8 Episode 11 "Nobody's Fault"
House and his team face a disciplinary hearing with Dr. Cofield (Jeffrey Wright) after a chemistry teacher (David Anders), is admitted to the hospital with paralysis. As the patient is going to be transferred, House realizes his syndrome and informs his wife. As he is on the hearing with Dr. Cofield, he is prepared to send House to prison again, but the wife of the patient arrives and thanks him for his correct treatment. Dr. Cofield sets him free, but House berates him for his cowardice as it was obvious that he would have been arrested, so he let him loose to avoid media attention.

If you watch carefully through the show there's always hints that House cares, but never admits to it. The members of his team he acted the nicest to were those who had something like him in personality or attitude; 13/Hadley: intelligent and calculating but once she was diagnosed with Huntington's she became a less self-destructive version of House, Chase: after arguing with House and fired is told "you've been here the longest, either you've learned all you can, or you haven't learned anything at all," and Amber: although her time on the team was short she was the only one whose manipulative tendencies caused her to seem like a rival and it's not until her death that he realizes how smart she was. I've noticed that Cameron was the only one he seemed to push to get over her empathy because as he says; "if she can't handle breaking bad news she should get a different specialty." She was openly compassionate and tended to become far too close emotionally to patients while House admits (at least once) that he distances himself because it caused a patient's death

@@SaraMorgan-ym6ue The "blame game," is an unfortunate side effect of medical diagnosis! When multiple doctors have different opinions on not only what is wrong, but also what will help, inevitably someone will be wrong, but I'm not sure that makes them, to "blame." Medicine is referred to as "practice," after all. With that said, if a patient hasn't been upfront with their history, they may be to blame, BUT, generally speaking, the highest ranking Doctor on said diagnostic team, the one with the most medical knowledge or experience, would have to shoulder the blame since they, technically, "oversee" the others. Doesn't make it right, or fair, it just tends to be how the legal system will see it.

@victorpradha9946
@victorpradha9946 3 года назад
House is NOT without compassion...remember how he took that one photo of Kutner that captured how House saw Kutner (looking down away from the camera) after Kutner's death. House is doing several things simultaneously: He's thinking Chase can't feel his legs, and my one leg gives me constant agonizing pain driving him to be an opioid addict He's trying to determine how is it that Chase can't feel his legs from a scalpel wound to the heart. He's dd-xing the patient (not Chase) and he's feeling bad about what happened to Chase
@triciaramgoolam4045
@triciaramgoolam4045 3 года назад
Also, House's callousness is because he cares. He hates feeling emotions and he acts out like that so he doesn't have to feel the care that he feels for Chase. Chase has been on his team the longest, and is the one most like House himself.

@@victorpradha9946 Of course. House is just antisocial, not a psychopath. He obviously cares. He just doesn't like showing his emotions because he doesn't know how to deal with them, since it's something he can't control with logic. And he doesn't like dealing with people. It was super obvious that he's not ignoring Chase. He's trying to diagnose the patient because he needs to rationalize what happened and find something to blame.
@victorpradha9946
@victorpradha9946 2 года назад
@@Shendue I wouldn't go so far as to say he's antisocial. He's more keep most people at arms length because "feelings", "attachments" cloud judgment. A drunk House basically tells Cuddy that loving her makes him a less gifted doctor and that being with her means he'll save fewer lives, but that he's okay with that...he chooses her. This kind of explains House's anger when he sees Cuddy moving on. House feels he sacrificed some of his gift to be with Cuddy, and yet she seems to have rather easily found another to love. This is why House tries avoid connecting with his patients and even the candidates for his team (by giving them numbers). He's not antisocial: He connected deeply with 13 (Remy Hadley), with Taub, certainly with Chase. He cares what happens to them. He even tries to save Taub from himself...but then gives up because he sees what a lost cause Taub is (an incorrigible cheat, like his own mother).

House is afraid of caring, as has been implied throughout the whole show. Whenever something becomes too personal, his reaction is to withdraw, make excuses and deflect the matter as a way to cope easier. It's what makes it so poignant every time he admits his feelings openly, like when he apologizes to Chase at the end of this episode, though he knows him so well at that point that he doesn't even need the apology.

@@persey7241 If by apologizes you means pretty much says "sorry you disobeyed me", then sure. It may be implied he's "scared of caring" but its outright said he's a sociopath. And he is. He put Cuddy and her toddler daughter who adored house in mortal danger out of jealousy and envy. He left Wilson in the cold after Wilson lost everything to protect him multiple times. He was mad at Chase for taking the attention away from his puzzle, that's why he busts into the room right after chases surgery to steal the team away. Chase also does end up blaming house for this and their relationship was never the same. House may be a great charactuer (if not the best of all time) to watch, but without a doubt he's a uncaring POS.

When I saw that, I nodded my head along. As House said, he had calculated all that could go wrong medically in the diagnostic trial, EXCEPT for the possibility of someone from his team going against his orders. And as Taub said, they all knew psychosis was one of the 3 possible outcomes of the trial, and Chase chose to go against House's orders, go in there while another one of his team was already in there with a patient, with an object (aka the scalpel) that could be used as a weapon. Because of that, Chase put not only himself in harm's way, but the patient himself AND another doctor. In a situation like this, the board at the hospital, and the lawyers, would most likely put the blame at Chase's feet, even though he was the one injured
@NicholePV
@NicholePV 3 года назад
@@stineandersen56 While I'm inclined to agree initially, I think a point could be added that if they knew psychosis was one of the three possible outcomes and that the patient could therefore become a danger within a certain time frame, then they should have enforced psychiatric restraints on the hospital bed during that time frame only for both the patients' safety and their own. What if it had been no one going AWOL doing their own testing, the patient woke and injured themself in a psychotic fit; it would have been the ordering physician at fault, it would've been on House.
@stineandersen56
@stineandersen56 3 года назад
@@NicholePV I can see that point of view, but in that case, Chase could see the patient wasn't restrained while knowing psychosis was one of those options, and even then he decided to keep being in that room, with the scalpel. In this case, then, it can be said that yes, House can be seen to be at fault for not having the patient restrained, but Chase can also be seen as being at fault because he didn't follow the orders of his superior and did bring with him a potential weapon when around a patient he knew could go into psychosis. It is a dilemma, which is why all of them, except Chase, were asked who was responsible for the incident because it can be seen as if all of them are at fault
@NicholePV
@NicholePV 3 года назад
@@stineandersen56 A very good point. I think in that case then that House would probably be guilty of negligence (if such a thing exists for doctors? Idk I'm not a lawyer lol), and Chase would be responsible for his own injury.

Yep always thought they missed a trick by letting Chase full recover after this. They definitely should’ve let him have a limp, lack of trust in people afterwards etc. It would’ve indefinitely therefore carried on the “damaged doctor” vibe leaving for an open-ended finish to the series.
@MM-vs2et

@@AbominationPromotion Chase was always the inadvertent House contra. Making him the new House would undermine his entire role for the last 7 seasons. He also has a strong moral and spiritual connection, something clearly House will never have, that makes him just a very stable person. Even after he was facing death, he couldn't change. He tried, but he just couldn't. But after almost a decade under House, he inherited House's diagnostic skills, which is a perfect replacement. Maybe not as interesting as House, but served his purpose.

Hugh's acting here- the hesitance on his face as he catches site of Chase's open chest, then visibly wiping it off his face; the way he seems to take a breath and raise his head when Chase first speaks, so awesome. The reason I think a lot of people can't get into this show is a lot of it is subtle, and uses a lot of allegory as well. It's also mostly character driven- the cases themselves honestly aren't that good (plot holes for even the medically ignorant are big enough to drive a truck through), but the way they affect the characters are beautiful.

This epi with Chase nearly dying and winding up disabled, sets up one of fav House episodes: "Chase" (Season 8, Epi 12). The dynamic between House and Chase is one of deep understanding and the final conversation between the two is that of father warning his son not to make the same mistake he did and end up like him. Also, the acting between Chase (Jesse Spencer) and Moira (Julie Mond) is just marvelous. The level of emotion and depth and a sense of deep familiarity that comes with bonding the way Chase and Moira are supposed to have done really was brought out well by Spencer and Mond! My favorite part of the Epi was Chase hobbling into House's office and the two sharing a knowing glance...just the subtlest nod of the head from House and the most fleeting look from Chase. They understood each other and respected each other on level that escapes Park and Adams, maybe even Taub.

On one hand, yeah, from their perspective it seems like House doeesn't really care. On the other hand, they were legitimately using Chase getting stabbed as an excuse, even if not intentionally, to not do their jobs, acting like them sitting around in a room for 'support' was more important than saving someone's life. House is just the reasonable person expecting them to DO those jobs, rather than sit around in a room going "Our friend got stabbed" as if that justifies them standing around doing nothing. And from House's perspective, Chase is recovering, them being there literally does nothing but make THEM feel better, despite the fact it's CHASE who got stabbed, not them. They're refusing to do their jobs for their own comfort, when that's not what being a doctor is about. Once House realizes Chase's situation might be worse than they thought, he gets serious about it. It's no longer 'Chase is going to be fine', it's 'Chase might not be fine', and that gets him to focus on it.

I ove how in medical series the doctors do every type of medicine. Like there was no cardiac, emergency or trauma surgeon working

House focused on the patient and not Chase because he knew there were better qualified doctors (i.e surgeons) who could take better care of him and he could mask his fear because he knew Chase was getting that treatment but the moment Chase mentioned the epidural, all bets were off because that was something that might not be fixable and his fear came to the forefront

Boxing Day 2021 and I’m still watching this, one of the biggest moments House shows humility

Finally you included the surgery in your clip. I memorized all the ones that include heart surgery. I used to be a surgical tech as well as an LPN. Open heart has always been my favorite service to work in.

Done it again. Clicked on one House clip; I'm now 9 clips and 2 hours in. Love this channel!

As much as I think Taub is spineless he’s right, Chase knew the risks and brought a scalpel in anyway

I like how the show presents cases in various different ways, like there's the typical "man walks into a bar" setup but the framing and stuff in this episode is amazing, it's the same type of information but the presentation really sells everything

The interesting thing about the guy calling house callous is that he isn't, house simply recognized that despite the fact that chase got stabbed he couldn't help him, and even despite that he still went to make sure he made it through ok. Once he knew all that could be done was, he went back to the person he could save and did what he could. The honestly truth is that house cared immensely, he just had two lives in danger, and only one he could save, he put his duty in front of his feelings, something more noble than anyone else in the show

That's a wrong interpretation of House. Over and over again in the series we are shown that solving the mystery aka being a diagnostician is his coping mechanism. Whenever the real facts of his own life become overwhelming, he buries himself in work to avoid feelings. It's just another addiction to him, the same as vicodin. Can't worry about the pain of you're numbed up in the throws of an addict spiral. Yes, it is the most logical outcome of the situation and that's what House tells the others, but any subsequent watching of episodes and you will understand that in his way, this is how House copes with the stress: by focusing on the puzzle

A nurse that I worked with told me about her experience of getting stabbed in the back. She had been getting ready to get into her car and drive to work. Suddenly she felt this sharp ‘punch’ sensation in her back and walked back into her house. She told her (now ex...and in jail) husband about this, but started having difficulty breathing. She fell to the floor and her husband called for emergency help......... but......... while hovering near unconsciousness, she heard her husband tell them that she had been stabbed!! He hadn’t even looked under her coat, yet he knew that she had been stabbed!!! FYI: yep, he had a mistress who he was planning to marry, after he collected his wife’s great insurance policy‼️

House focused on the patient to try and distract himself from the pain he felt for Chase.

The guy bagging Chase is doing an awful job. Two tiny breaths within a second will do absolutely nothing.
