Upgrade an existing cabinet to keep your glues, paints, and finishes from freezing this winter.
With a few simple supplies you can do this upgrade in an evening. All you need is a heater, a temperature controlled outlet, some insulation board, and some stick-on weather-stripping. Links below :)
Thanks for watching!

Riddle me this; how does the heat get from the lower shelf to the upper shelf? Are there slats in the upper shelf?

@42Pursuit 3 года назад
Ah, good question. I forgot to say the front of the shelf isn't flush with the doors so there's a slight gap heat can rise up through.

How warm does the vault heater keep the area? My garage is unheated and I'm looking for something to keep a 3d printer enclosure at like 75 or above.

Not sure if it could keep it that warm, it would depend on how insulated the enclosure is and how warm the room it's in is. The 18" rod only produces 12 watts of heat so maybe not. I saw this used in a storage cabinet to keep filament dry (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ewH591EkS38.html ) but haven't seen it in an enclosure to keep the heat at a certain temperature.

Nice video, very well done. Curious to know how the heated cabinet worked out for you last winter? I’m in Minnesota with a garage workshop and hauled all my glue and finishes inside already. Have you done many glue up in the winter? Thanks for the video it inspired me to do something similar. Take care

Thanks! It worked about as well as I hoped. Nothing in the cabinet froze and the few glue-ups I did went well and the glue flowed fine. My shop space is insulated and has an electric heater that I would turn on only when I was in the space, typically only on weekends. Because of that the shop never quite got down into the negative degrees F as an uninsulated/unheated space would have, but it did get below freezing a few times and the heater did it's job.

SUPER cool video. Very well done. May I ask you two questions? I have a plastic cabinet that I bought from Home Depot. It's one you put together. It's about 4' x 4' x 6" deep. I bought the hard pink foam insulation. A guy at HD told me that it will be enough to keep my stuff from freezing. It will be in an un-insulated garage. I'm in the 5 boroughs of NYC so it gets cold in the winter. Is the foam enough or do I need the stick heaters? My second question is...May I use a regular electric blanket to keep my upright air compressor warm. It's also in the garage. I was going to wrap it around it. Or, do I need to use a heavier duty blanket? Thanks in advance...

Great video and thank you! Question: I noticed you didn't insulate the cabinet doors. Where I live, in the winter, at night, it can get far below zero degrees in my unheated shop which is detached from my house. Would insulating the cabinet doors help to keep things warm and less stress on the heating unit?

You make a good point, insulating the doors would likely be a good idea 👍

How warm does the cabinet get can you post a update video

I set the temperature controlled outlet to turn the heater on at 40°F and off at 55°F. It's worked fine for me at those levels. And you can get a bigger or smaller heater depending on the size of cabinet you're trying to keep warm.

Did you build those cabinets or did you buy them?

I've built many cabinets like those, but those particular ones I only built the cabinet boxes and used pre-made doors as I got them for a screaming deal.

It's a resistive heater.
