Joseph Shannon, PhD, a personality disorder expert, follows up his 2012 Keep Talking interview and describes when unreasonable behavior is a symptom of an underlying personality disorder, and how, through the power of empathic listening and the knowledge of universal human concerns, it can be possible to disarm the unreasonable person and avoid conflict.

Excellent, thank you. I've been married to someone like this for over 30 years and I have severe ptsd, anxiety and depression because of it. I always forgive and think he will realize how harmful he can be. The raging and verbal abuse just keeps coming out of left field. I'm too loving and merciful and see the good in him. How do I leave? I'm scared. I've invested so much and do love him, but I can't take anymore insanity.

Thank you for reaching out to us. RU-vid and other social media platforms are great for obtaining general information, they are not secure systems. Therefore, we strongly encourage people who are seeking information about admissions to call our admissions team at 802-258-3700. Our admissions counselors take calls any time of day, and they are very helpful.

My ex husband felt he didn't have to follow rules. At least the ones where he had a good chance of not being caught. fake handicapped sign, excessive speeding (speeds up to 90 -95 miles an hour with his young children in the car; pathological lying, cheating, breaking into my home; stalking, bullying people physically weaker than him and many more. In marriage therapy, however, he was charming and acted in a perfect manner. Charmed the female therapist that I was the "overly sensitive one" and couldn't take a joke regarding his verbal abuse. I thought I was the crazy one by the time we separated.

27:38 could yall do an entire video with him talking in this tone of voice. I'd binge watch every video if it had that tonality. I'd take him even more seriously and would probably surpass every mental health RU-vid channel

This sounds too accusatory and discounting of people with trauma.

sadly generalised and the empathy seems acted out and not genuine, towards bpd patients... exactly why people with bpd dont easily go to therapy. ofcourse therapy is intended to be a safe place in order to deal with issues honestly, but already one is judged in this very "safe" place... what an unhelpful cycle the therapist helps to set up...

Hm, I don't see it this way. How would you compose a program of ~30 minutes to cover this topic? Some bullet points would be enough, I don't expect a fully fleshed out script ^^

@@erwinlinke8997 I don't quite see it that way either . The problem has to be identified before it can be managed .
