Clever way to keep your Windows C drive clean for better performance and also free up space on windows C drive even if it's full without deleting your games or files 😊.

Disable hibernation for 3.5 gb of free storage and disable reserved storage for 8 gb ( can be upto 100 gbs ) free space . Very useful if uve got a SSD

Another use of symbolic links is coupling them with ram drives to shorten load time. The gist of it is creating the extra drive from ram, which is orders of magnitude faster even than ssd. Then you move the files you want always loaded into the ram drive and you use symbolic links to keep them working like they are still on c:\. A decade ago you could play Skyrim (~6 GB) without loading screens, since it was already on ram. It was also used to move temp files that choked the hard drive (or that ruined them with frequent read/write cycles, like browsers). It was more useful in the past when we only had spinning hard drives, nowadays ssds are orders of magnitude faster, bigger and longer lasting.

Thanks a lot for making this video, I tried to do it manually after learning about symbolic links, but I failed. You made it really easy :)

500GB For C Drive is a waste of space. Also, you can choose different drive for all your Downloads, Documents, Desktop, Picture, Music, Videos folders. Just go to properties of those folders, click location, then click move and chose another folder in another driver and all your files will be moved from C drive to another place. This comes very handy when you need to reinstall Windows again. You don't have to move the files every time.
@kilObit
@kilObit Год назад
yeah but it works better than moving, for other folders too

So are you still doing the BleachBit experiment? As in cleaning with BleachBit and waiting over time to see if Windows responsiveness and SSD speeds go down?

I used to do all this stuff with older sata SSD's, currently I have everything but games and movies on my SSD (including swap), But I also know that's not good for the lifespan of the SSD, in my case my PC is 5 years old and only has a 256GB NVME (it is fast though). I just cleanup the temp/cache/update files when my SSD gets over half full. Currently have 157GB's free on my C: drive.

If the C drive is recognizing the fake used spaced will it say it's full even though it isn't. Example u have more space in the other drive 1tb that's larger than the C drive 500gb and you exceed the capacity of the C drive even though it actually isn't. What happens?
@kilObit
@kilObit Год назад
it will work cuz c drive isn't storing actually any data... it will never run out of space

I haven't tried it myself, but if you repartition your c: drive to have a huge blank partition, you will instruct the system to preserve it more efficiently and prolong its life a lot - not sure that matters to you. What does matter however, if you leave at least 20% of space always free by partitioning it as empty, you won't ever get into situation where your write speeds plummet due to the lack of space to shuffle. That's one of the reasons Samsung pro drives cost so much - they have huge empty space reserved for overprovisioning.

Let me suggest a better approach (but you'll need to start over with formatting your C). Create partitions to the main SSD, so you can keep read/write speeds across all your system. This structure is going to help you also in the case of another C formatting in the future because you'll just reinstall Windows on the main partition while you'll keep programs and stuff in the same drive (other partition/s). A good structure is to give 1/4 of the total space (120gb) to the main partition (C:) for Windows (enough space for system files and potential updates). For the rest of 360gb, make a second partition for everything else or split it as you like for games and programs, etc. Name them accordingly for being organized (for example G: for games, P: for programs) and the system will treat them as different drives. And if one of your other partitions is filling up, you can move and store files on other real drives with symbolic links as you do now. If you go to Settings > System > Storage space > Advanced storage space settings > you'll find a category about where new content will be installed by default (so to choose the other partitions).
@kilObit
@kilObit Год назад
yeah that's good but having a dedicated drive is better because of the ssd read and write usage remains the same even if you make multiple partitions
@_g4m3r_
@_g4m3r_ Год назад
@@kilObit Do you mean you want to keep read/writes untouched as possible to extend the lifespan? Well yeah, it's logical thinking, but they are made for this, so there is no point in not using it. It's like buying a new car and parking it in the garage forever. Also, as someone else said, 480gb only for the Windows folder is a waste of space. In that case, I'd suggest buying a smaller SSD (128gb or 256gb) and dedicating it to Windows in order to stick to the current plan.
@kilObit
@kilObit Год назад
@@_g4m3r_ exactly I should get 128 ssd cuz im not gonna use c drive anyway, but it's gonna cost me more so for now I think i keep the 500gb ssd...
@mikem9536
@mikem9536 Год назад
@@kilObit Just add a 256 GB system drive. Keep swap on older/spare drive that helps a TON.
