The eatery is prominently located at the cross junction of Jalan Sultan and North Bridge Road. Having been in operation for close to a century, Nan Hwa Chang Fish Head Steamboat is known to be the oldest eatery still serving their delectable Teochew-style steamboat.
Served in a copper pot filled to the brim with soup and ingredients like cabbage, Tang Oh, yam and seaweed, the pot is kept piping hot by the charcoal embers that add a subtle smokey flavour. The broth is cooked with fish bones, dried sole fish and cabbage gives a natural sweetness. Choose your favourite fish to go with the soup - pomfret, red snapper, grouper and Song fish. The fresh, thick slices of fish and broth will make you want to come back time and again for more.
Your meal would not be complete without trying the Tze Char dishes. The signatures are the fried pork belly marinated with fermented tofu, braised intestine, homemade fried tofu and sambal vegetbles, just to name a few.
Mr Michael Lee, who now runs the eatery, aims to keep the heritage alive for many generations to come. He hopes the eatery continues to provide a place for families to bond over the traditional, authentic steamboat.
