Keeping Trespassers OUT + Needed Water Upgrade! | DIY | Shed To Cabin
Hello Everyone! It has been a great week! We have got a lot done around here. The weather is getting better day after day. The chicken got a coop upgrade that is going to be so nice to have. Roxane's garden got a security upgrade to keep all the cat trespassers out! Roxane was not feeling very well so I had to step into Dr. mode and make sure she was ok. Thank you all for being here with us, we appreciate you! Enjoy.

suggestion on the cats digging in the garden… dump a load of sand somewhere out of the way just for the cats. It might solve the problem. ❤

Hi Anthony! Good for you looking after your wife. Sunbeam bread has been around for generations. I am 71 and remember it when I was younger. Im in Canada and haven't seen it here in a very long time. Hope you feel better soon Roxanne. Thankyou for the video and I'll catch you on the next one. ❤

The water cups are a great solution to keep the chickens hydrated. The rain catchment off the coop roof would be a great idea other than all the trees overhead. I've fashioned catch pans and just mounted them on top of the tote, they catch decent amounts of water without the gutter setup. It consists of a new "oil spill pan" from the auto store with a hole in it. So simple, yet effective. Love what ya'll are doing ❤️

So glad Wyatt and Roxanne are feeling better. I think you will enjoy raising a pig ,I know I missed mine after he was the hit of a pig roast. He ate all my slop, but he had a good taste. I had a friend that feed his pig dog food 😢bad ideal because the meat smelled like dog food.he never went to the hog roast but the dogs enjoyed him. We had to ring his nose to keep him from digging out. We also had rabbits, save their poop for the garden. Goats was alot of fun ,but never ate one or milked them. I'm a chicken person, they are just so easy and the eggs are a plus.

From experience, if you didn't pull the plastic tote out of the cage & rough sand it before painting it, you will find that the paint will eventually flake off from exposure to the sun. You might want to cover the entire tote with a heavy duty tarp & gorilla tape it. And by the way, if you've never seen Sunbeam brand bread on the west coast, you're just not old enough. Wonder & Sunbeam used to be the major bread suppliers out there before everybody else decided to get into the act 😂. Have a great day 😊.

so glad to hear Roxanne and Wyatt are feeling better. Happy St Patrick's Day! Your chickens would really enjoy it if you put some leaves in the run. I just rake up a couple of garbage cans full of leaves and just dump it in the middle of the run. They will spread it out everywhere as they scratch through the leaves after the bugs.

The goats and the pigs will clear out any area that needs to be cleared for you. Just pen them in with a solar-electric wire. . . Great idea to convert the tote to a more permanent chicken watering station. That will be a big relief for them AND for you and Wyatt. You can do the same thing with a 5 gallon bucket for the two roosters. . . I hope the solution for keeping the cats out of the garden works. . . Nice looking home produced eggs. . . . You're being a great husband to Roxane in taking good care of her while she's sick. I really hope she gets to feeling better soon. . . Looking forward to the kitchen cabinet video(s).

Gary, I saw on another channel for a homesteader in Vermont who recently purchased a cover that perfectly fits over your sized tote to keep the water from growing algea inside. A guy on another channel built a slatted wall around his for the same reason

Hey guys, before you clear to much land, please think about clearing the ground through the woods. Maybe a tree here and there. That way your animals have cover from the weather and room to roam. But place them as far from your house as possible.

Your chickens might start eating their own eggs if u put the shells in like that.. I always bake mine and crush them up and mix in their food. It helps with calcium! Those waters work great! I will leave the cut offoutside.also I would put a spring on your gate so it always closes behind you just in case the dogs or facts are following you close! Great idea!!

Chickens should always have access to fresh, clean, cool water, especially in the summer heat. Provide multiple water sources located in shady, cool areas if possible to encourage hens to drink. Add ice cubes, ice blocks, or frozen water bottles if needed to keep water cool.

Glad you have that bridge net on you chickens. Get you some fish to clean your water tote out. I made my cats a tote (drill a whole one inch from bottom so plants do not drown) put cat nip or cat mint. I find cats asleep in tote beds They leave my beds alone. Lunch sounds good. Yum! Load on the pepper and add some garlic.

Pigs are easy to raise and the “regular” breeds, Berkshire, Duroc, Hampshire, are ready to process in only 6 months. Be sure the males are cut cause sometimes those hormones can taint the meat (boar taint). I hope Rox and Wyatt are feeling better. The place is really coming together 👍👏💚

Yes it WOULD be perfect to catch the rain. Add a run of spouting to the back of the hen house. Make sure to put a screen over the hole on the tote to catch debris. We loved ours

Calculate how much vinegar to put in the water tub to keep it from growing algae. You can also add some garlic or oregano. For health benefits. If the sun hits it out a black trap over the water container, that helps as well. Best way to stop the cats is make them a sand box, put them in that sandbox They will get it. And stay out of garden for releasing themselves.

Just so you know both goats and pigs will clean a lot of the underbrush out for you. Just put Pier=One fencing around put animals in and turn on the fence.

Nice! And maybe think about leaving a few trees for shade over the animal pens (I've seen that done at some other homesteads).... those trees are several years old... as long as they are in good shape. Looking GOOD!!!!

You might consider making a small chicken tractor so you can give your chickens some pasture foraging, which will lead to you buying less food ad the eggs will be more nutritious. Bugs and vegetation are what they really would enjoy. The tractor would also help you clear areas and fertilizer would would be spread around. All are bonuses.

If you should decide to use a chicken tractor, save some kitty litter buckets and add the drinking cups to one...four cups... and another can have some PVC pieces added, which will allow the chickens to eat from the bucket. A shade cloth will help keep the sun off or a tarp to protect from rain.

If a cat starts using it in the garden it will be hard to stop the cat from going there unless you make a better choice for your cats. Easy to get to and easy to dig in like sand. I think I remember you have sand around one of the streams close to your home. Maybe get a good quantity of the sand and put it where you want them to go. May work. No guarantee.

Suggestion. Break up the dried egg shells, so they don't start eating the eggs they lay. I've heard they will do that. You can also give them oyster shells for protein

I tested chickens for West Nile Virus when there was the scare back in the early 2000's. I had custom made pens that I could get into to catch the chickens. I set a 5 gallon bucket up on a shelf water for the chickens and used the water cups similar to yours, bit I used aquarium tubing to go from the buckets to the pens and they worked very well. Chickens like to peck at things, so they learned fast photo drink from them. That was really great invention.

We have a similar waterer setup. I suggest you wire the pvc pipe that the cups are on to the side if the coop to provide support. The chickens pecking on the cups cause the pipe to bounce and eventually leak. Also, in the w8nter time the pvc wil freeze and break. We empty the tank and use an alternative watering source in the winter.

That's basically exactly what I'm working on doing for my coop. Rainwater collection into totes, then plum the water into coop. Still need to finish my coop 1st.
