Here at the Watercress Line we are fortunate to have our Hampshire unit 1125 as part of our fleet. The last time the unit ran was before lockdown, and since then the team have been working on the unit mechanically. However, with the original expected lifespan being a mere 15-20 years, more work now needs to be undertaken. In this episode our operations manager Richard takes us inside the unit to show some of the work that needs to be done.

Good to see 1125 being appraised for repair. It would be great to see it reupholstered in the original "Trojan" moquette too!

I used to go to school on board the Hampshire units between Alresford and Winchester, so to me, the thumpers are a vital part of the railway. I remember that when the 1300 series were being built at Eastleigh, it was common for a new unit to be sent out on an Alton Line service before being sent off to Sussex to be put into service there. Much as we enjoyed the 1100 series, riding on a brand new train ex works was something special.

I used to get them from Bramley to Basingstoke in the 1970s. When you smacked the seats dust would fly everywhere.

205205 has been sitting in Ongar Station for a couple of years waiting to go off for major bodywork. Shame as they fixed the camshaft and bearing issues but never came back into service. Looks great in NSE livery though!

Great stuff as always, Will, and great to see you back in 2023! Can you show us how the auto-coupler / buckeye coupler is fitted into place? On East Coast Australian railways the auto-coupler has been common or standard on most rollingstock (depending on where you are) for as long as 100 years! I'm somewhat fascinated by the way that you Brits use it on some older stock, as well as on some Class 66 locos and freight stock today.

Thanks Will! 😀 If you haven't already done it and I've somehow missed it, I'd be interested in seeing more of the section of line that you don't use. I seem to recall something about a Brewery siding further south? I had one on my old model railway but would be interested to know more about the one that was on the Watercress Line.

hi Will, great video,is there no room under cover for this set, or put a cover over the whole train,how is 50,027 Lion getting on ? i am pleased the 08 is being cared for, its a delightful little engine,

Hi Peter, I believe they're looking at a range of options including getting it undercover but as with all things railway, a decent cover isn't cheap. I'll keep you posted though and do an update on Lion
