Patrick McKeown's insights and work have helped me a lot over the last 3 years. I tape my mouth before sleep and practice walking with my mouth shut. These videos keep my motivation high while improving my understanding. This video contained a lot of great info in the first minutes, but it was fast and intense. Some visual input, some slides that summarize the content would support the learning process. Maybe something to keep in mind for future videos. Thanks for the wonderful work you are doing!

1 year into nose breathing exercise, 80% of training. I mean very light duty amounts, non-athlete, but not couch potato. The recovery in the immediate is way quicker, the day by day recovery is quicker too. The concept of less stress from less breaths is very noticeable. The mental game improves with it. The concept of the amount of training at various levels should be re-visited. Stepen Seiler discussed this, that 80% of training should be at zone 2. If recovery is better, then maybe time at a higher intensity could be increased. Lots of research is needed and i'm sure it will be dug into. Thank you Patrick for all that you do.

Thank you for your comments @scoobtoober2975. We would LOVE to see more scientific research on nose breathing. There are WAY too many examples of the potential benefits for the subject to be ignored.

As a serious recreational cyclist, I used Patrick’s methods to switch from mouth breathing to nose breathing up to 145 bpm heart rate before I required some mouth breathing to cope. During climbs, my riding buddies would all gas out before the top. Me on the other hand would keep a steady nose breathing rate. It would always blow their minds. Needless to say, at the top of the climb I would drop them all with a big burst of speed while they continued to gasp for air. That was 5 years ago. I’ve continued to use structured breath holds as part of my morning routine and training ever since.

It’s great to see someone talk about the dangers of breath holding and hyperventilation in people with autonomic dysfunction. Very rare indeed. I’m fully adapted to nasal breathing during sport. I’m a road cyclist and never open my mouth basically. I rarely train above 90 % vo2 these days as I’m not competing anymore but I much prefer nasal at even these high intensities.

The Comanche traditionally could run 100 miles a day breathing nasally

That's amazing information @andrewhall6695, I heard about the Tarahumara in Mexico having an incredible tradition of long distance running. Didn't know about the Comanche. Thanks so much for sharing.

Does this also apply to resistance training exercises like lifting weights? Can we do nasal breathing during strength training? Thanks.

Nasal breathing can apply to most types of exercise/physical endeavour @eternalwarrior-yp2qx. When it comes to light/moderate exercise, we say try to nose breathe as much as possible. When at the upper levels, when we're pushing ourselves more, a mouth breath is often unavoidable and often necessary to give us that extra oxygen boost when push ourselves. But return to nose breathing as soon as possible as it will help with endurance and recovery.

It's hard at first, but it's doable...most Yogis practice this art in India...

The work of yogis and yoga breathing has been a huge influence across the board for better breathing @Mr.Miyagu. Sadly, practices in the west in the past 150 years emphasised big breaths with the mouth and upper chest rather than the 'deep' and silent breaths with the diaphragm that the original yogis were teaching. What if I have allergy on my nose? As I always feel partial to fully blockage of my nose, I feel difficult to breathe with my nose even in my daily hours. I tried ur method of holding my breath to unblock my nose, but I would still have partial blockage. What would you recommend for my allergy case?

With continuous nose breathing training, your body should eventually adapt and change over to full time nose breathing @henrychan4757. We would advise learning functional nose breathing with daily exercises and daily taking of the BOLT score to track your progress. Have you tried that nose washer? Might work. Visage I think? I thought about that but anxiety water rolling around my nose. :)

Nose washing items like neti pots can be very helpful for cleaning the nose @@dessiecoder2116, But you are right, they are not for everyone. I personally have not seen the visage nose cleaner but there are a variety on the market.
