Kegels for Bladder Urgency in Men
Bladder urgency occurs when the bladder muscle (detrusor) contracts. When the pelvic floor muscles contract the bladder relaxes and stops bladder urgency.
Stop OAB Bladder Urgency Step by Step
* Sit down when you experience bladder urgency
* Avoid holding your breath which can worsen urgency
* Perform a sustained Kegel exercise by shortening (retracting) the penis and contracting as if to stop the flow of urine
* Keep holding this Kegel exercise until bladder urgency stops as the bladder muscle relaxes
* Repeat Kegel exercises to stop urgency should it recommence
* Practice Kegels for real world bladder urgency for example with urgency triggers such as running water in the shower to stop overactive bladder symptoms.
2. Kegel Exercises for Overactive Bladder in Men
With bladder filling the pelvic floor muscles and tiny muscles inside the urine tube automatically contract allowing the bladder to fill. When these muscles are weak you may be more likely to experience overactive bladder symptoms.
The second way to manage overactive bladder symptoms including frequent urination, bladder urgency and incontinence may be achieved via pelvic floor muscle strengthening with regular Kegel exercises.
How to do Kegel Exercises Step by Step for Strengthening
* Start with the correct kegels technique
* You may choose to start Kegels lying down with weak pelvic floor muscles
* Progress to standing Kegels because bladder urgency usually occurs when standing
* Gradually increase your pelvic floor muscle endurance aiming for up to 10-20 second Kegel exercises
* Rest and recover in between every exercise
* Progress to doing strong Kegel exercises
* Practice Kegel exercises for strengthening 3 times a day on at least 5 days of the week

Wow Michelle! Your explanations, instructions and illustrations are so clear, I find it difficult to "not understand". 💯🙂 Well done! Since I've started watching your earlier videos, I've been practicing to strengthen my pelvic floor muscles in two positions: standing and in four point position on floor. I've worked up to about 12 seconds contraction hold for each position. I know that breathing pattern during exercising is very important. Question: Since you suggest progressing up to 20 second hold, what should my breathing pattern be during the 20 seconds? (i) holding my breath? (ii) in/out breathing with "tummy tight"? or ...? Thank you for your interest in the well being of all you present to!!

These exercises help lessen stress. Like flexing a bicep or quads but internal. I live in area of Canada where the water is hard and kidney stones are common. B6, cranberry pills lessen risk but dont lessen sediment. Managing oxalates and these exercises helps to lessen the constant bladder irritation. Many people here have Gi issues and again kidney stones. Still waiting to discuss all this with the urologist. Holding a kegel for half a minute for reps over five minutes is helpful. I use these exercises as an adjunct to lifts: saturday barbell curls with 165, calf raises with 295, deadlifts wed with reps up to around 485, squats up to 435 mon/fri and bench up to 245. Thks for the videos.
@michellephysio
@michellephysio 2 года назад
@5zazen my pleasure - I love the fact that you include Kegels in your workout just awesome. Interesting to read about the water in Canada, do you use water filters there? Yes there is mixed research on cranberry for reducing the risk of recurrent bladder infection. Re your Kegels routine sounds as though you have the endurance component working well, perhaps a couple of really strong 20 second holds at the start will help you make greater strength gains too? Just a thought, great to hear from you!
@5zazen
@5zazen 2 года назад
@@michellephysio I will try the twenty second holds. My father in law survived prostate cancer and he has a 2 hr limit for capacity, i will mention these exercises for him. You are doing a big service with these videos. Im still mystified as to why on 10/27 i got symptoms, apparently too much spinach, collagen and vit c for too many years and not enough hydration. I have a device called scale hound quartz technology that supposedly causes calcium ions to form chains which is good for hot water tanks although for the kidneys/bladder i wonder, as my 19 yr old daughter was told that she has crystals in her urine and that she is not hydrated enough although drinking >32 oz containers of water all day, and she takes maybe 1 gram vit c a day, no protein powder(she is a ballet dancer). Some use water softeners replacing calcium here with sodium, thats costly and im wary with health effects, including potassium too. Im managing the calcium influx by eating magnesium(oats) and around 300 mg mg citrate daily which offsets calciums apparent muscle agonist activity(?) and seems to calm the system. All speculative as im still waiting for the urologist info although i already emailed him. Again kidney stones are common here, my friend a male rn was hospitalized 3 wks ago for kidney stones, hes 35, doc said oxalates were too high. Magnesium and vit b6 lessen oxalate risks in many studies so mag and around 100 mg b6 daily. Folate also lessens oxalate risks. What is making the water hard matters. In Alberta its calcium mostly, in Idaho iron and sulfur. And people respond differently, some get arthritis such as my wife, some get sleep difficulties, complicated and all speculation as im no doctor. One cardiologist i work with she is terrified of vit c due to kidney possible risks. So right now im observing. I do know that with aging things do happen such as bladder effects. Physiotherapy was my first interest as i believe a person working thru ailments matters and alleviates anxiety rather than trying to be patient as a patient waiting on a doctor to assess and actually do something. Thank you.

Be nice to hear from people who have successfully used these exercises. Especially men. Do the urges associated with O.A.B. go away with these exercises, or are they reduced? Can you hold more water in your bladder comfortably after integrating these exercises in to you daily life? Be very interested to hear from people. Cheers.

@michellephysio
@michellephysio 2 года назад
@elie akl you can test by seeing how quickly and efficiently you can stop the flow of urine (perhaps test once a week). Also being able to feel a definite contraction, maintaining this while breathing and being able to contract standing upright are all signs that the pelvic floor strength is good. Great question!

Michelle, I love all of your videos! I had prostate surgery two months ago and use your real time daily kegels video 3x/day. I go rucking every morning for two hours with 25 lbs of weights and usually have no urinary control problems while hiking. I work out in the afternoon including resistance training, yoga and your kegel real time program. I tend to have overactive bladder after I'm thru with the physical activity and am relaxing late afternoon and into the evening. I'm not drinking alcohol or coffee. Question: Should I be forcing myself to use the bathroom less frequently so that I train the bladder to hold more capacity?
@michellephysio
@michellephysio 2 года назад
@jcdunn2004 yes exactly - the longer you can defer the more the bladder becomes accustomed to holding a greater volume. You can measure your volumes for a couple of days using an old jug to get an idea or average of where you are currently at with this. Try to increase the duration of your holds gradually say 5 -10 mins increase per week if you can manage this. We usually aim for average bladder volumes of around 300-400 mls or 10.14 oz - 13.52 oz. Try not to exceed 500 ml to avoid overstretching the bladder, rather aim for the sweet spot. I'm really glad you enjoy the videos, thanks so much and all the best for your training jc, cheers Michelle

Michelle- I followed your advice for the past 2 months. Maximum bladder volume has increased to 400 mL I hit that target 16 weeks post surgery. I also follow your most recent Kegel routine 3x/day. On days I feel tired, I do the exercises on my back. I am virtually back to normal continence with no OAB. I no longer need pads. I still ruck 6 miles/day with no issues. I start radiation in one week and wanted to be sure everything was normal before starting that. i credit your advice and videos for getting me in shape prior to radiation so thank you so much. -Joe

I have been having an over active bladder for about 2 years i first used to drink A LOT of beer and coffee I stoped i dont rink coffee anymore and only drink beer on occasion i still have the issue I went to the doctor and got some medicine its not working very well i drink a decent amount of water and i drink about 2 vitamin waters i actually cut them down with water too but i wanted to ask if you thought vitamin waters are a good or bad drinking choice and if not do you have any recommended drinks for this problem I am just now starting to try kegel exercises how long until you think i will see results and how much should i do a day?
@michellephysio
@michellephysio 2 года назад
@axil kollist some drinks can cause overactive bladder problems. I think that vitamin supplements can be helpful when there are vitamin deficiencies and/or absorption problems however in many cases they are of no benefit if the person is consuming their vitamins in the foods they consume. The best way to know is to cease the vitamin water (unless you've been prescribed for some medical reason) and note the effect on your bladder - you may find that the vitamin water is a possible irritant. Plain water is best with overactive bladder problems. AS far as how many Kegels and how often this video should answer your questions, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k6ZdMr1lChg.html I hope this helps and all the best!🙏

@@michellephysio thank you so much I will try and see what happens if I stop drinking vitamin water besides water do you have any other drinks you would recommend any drinks that you know won’t irritate the bladder ?
@michellephysio
@michellephysio 2 года назад
@axil kollist this really is a matter of trial and error for the individual. Start withy eliminating the vitamin water and note the effect. Then introduce one drink at a time and note the effect however it's not just drinks, there are many foods that can irritate the bladder too. The food you eat in particular acidic foods such as tomatoes can also irritate the bladder for some people perhaps I need to make a video on bladder irritants to help? Low acid and avoiding carbonated (fizzy) drinks, caffeine and alcohol is a good place to start, I'll get busy with some content on this, all the best 🙏

what about melatonin for bladder capacity? magnesium and cranberry to lessen bladder irritation? Doctors here in alberta have not been helpful. Lots of sediment for 4 months, i drink enough water, and magnesium/cranberry seem to lessen urinary urgency as my body wants to dump sediment out of the urinary tract. Bloodwork showed no infection, all levels in normal limits just cloudy urine. Pretty much a wtf moment and my urologist and family doc dont seem worried. Still waiting to actually talk to the urologist. So these exercises help while im waiting to find out whether i have prostitis(unlikely as psa is normal, ultrasound normal, married-no vd), kidney failure(creatine/gfr normal no leg swelling liver distention). Love getting rid of massive frustration with these pelvic floor exercise, can do them at work while monitoring cardiac pts.
@michellephysio
@michellephysio 2 года назад
@ 5zazen yes on the cranberry, I haven't read anything on magnesium or melatonin but this is not to say they have no benefit. I'll check melatonin in the research and get back to you on this one. I did read some research that melatonin increases muscle protein synthesis while sleeping, I'm all for that!
@5zazen
@5zazen 2 года назад
@@michellephysio Thanks for this input. Here in Calgary sleep issues are common, whether related to altitude or serotonin disruptions due to calcium/magnesium drinking water effects(?) is unclear, data says water hardness is not detrimental to health. A x ray tech i work with likes melatonin, im a bit wary as while it may affect serotonin much of serotonin is in the gut. Increased muscle synthesis is good although at almost 50 it seems my body isnt motivated to increase strength, if i eat more i dont gain weight(ive got big problems from this according to nurses i work with). Very helpful about the detrusor muscle, this info can alleviate problems for males and females alike especially those in occupations like mine caring for pts with heart attacks.
