Andrew Marr predicted that Starmer would be temperamentally much better suited to being PM than campaigning for PM. The opposite of Johnson or Corbyn in that respect. Here's hoping...
People complain about Starmer's "lack of plan", but I see it as a feature rather than a bug. It's better to not make any promises than to overpromise and underdeliver. He's not the right-wing populists like Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, and Nigel Farage are, who vacuum up votes by making radical promises and delivering nothing.
"I'll now answer a few questions." Proceeds to spend about twenty minutes answering questions non-stop from the press in full with no evasion or weasel words. This is how to govern. Best of luck with your grown-up PM, UK.
We deserve some better governing than we've had from the Tories for 14 years. I'm not worried by the rise of the far right under Farage. He will likely employ his bombastic delivery as used when addressing the European Parliament, but his impact now will be like a gnat bite with only 5 MPs in total.
Isn't it? It's like we've been lied to for song long that we've forgotten how truth sounds. It's almost jarring hearing a Prime Minister talking with at least some semblance of honesty.
How disappointing that it took 5 questions for a journalist to congratulate him on his win.!! Remembering 5 years ago when they were all lording over Johnson and his 80 seat majority….Keirs tone already feels like we have grown ups back in charge…wish him and his cabinet all the best
I'm impressed that he's acknowledged the huge issue around prisons and sentencing. It's not a vote winner, but it's been brushed under the carpet for too long. Voted Lib Dem, but very happy to see a serious prime minister who sees the bigger picture.
Of course he's talking sense. It's his first speech as prime minister. The whole point of it is to get you to trust him. You people fall for this trap every single time. You'll get what you deserve, that I promise you.
@@marksneddonNo. What people fell for time after time is The Tory lies, that ended up leading to scandal after scandal. I honestly feel sorry for anyone who can say anything about this new Labour government after 14 years of total chaos.
@@Omenhachi You're so right. Having had to put up with buffoons in politicians' clothing like Trump, Johnson and Truss, it's strangely comforting to be spoken to like this again.
The "finally" bit says it all. He had to be so careful during the campaign and didn't want to say anything that would give canon fodder to the right-wing media. As such he often appeared stilted, unconfident, anxious. Today in this news conference he was none of those, appearing instead to be confident, relaxed and authoritative. We need a fair-minded, efficient headmaster to replace the bumbling fools of Johnson, Truss and Sunak.
It is refreshing, and dare I say hopeful, to listen to a British prime minister speak and not suspect, for once, that every syllable is a lie. What a difference an election makes
I know, I can barely believe that this is reality. We've had career-minded weasels in power for so long I can barely comprehend the fact that there's any other way a politician can behave.
People believe what they want to. They're children. Stsrmer is a snake, worse than Sunak. But people want to think everything will be OK, so critical thinking goes out the window. This is a nation of children. I cannot stand these people.
@@archvaldorAre you for real? Nah I suppose your delusions allow you to see Boris Johnson as the greatest in history. Please stop ruining our country with your Tory lies.
The Labour NEC was absolutely tribal, appalling and disgusting as the b.s they pulled with candidates such as Diane Abbott, Faiza Shaheen, just to name two high profile candidates.
Anyone remember the last time a brand new PM has got to actually working so quickly, setting a press conference laying out exactly what they planned on doing, didnt give a bunch of empty words, answered every question asked even if it wasnt empty promises that reporters want to hear. Im 44 and I honestly cannot remember a single PM who has done this ever. I did vote labour but it was more a stategic vote just to remeove the tories than putting my faith in the party. I like this so far, im quietly impressed. I do hope this sort of quick action will be on going. I like how he will be talking to all the leaders of all the countries of the UK as soon as he been put in charge not sitting in downing street planning on what colour curtains to put up in the second floor flat.
A government that's actually built to serve the people and not themselves. What a refreshing idea😂. Seriously though, I am so happy that we finally have competent people running things. Brash loud personalities who are self absorbed might be entertaining for some, but I'll take boring and effective any day.
Being a Lawyer he knows how to talk and explain things so even grass roots level can comprehend. Rishi had an erratic neurotic way of talking which was flying over people's head . What a nice refreshing change to listen to the new PM in a systematic and cool systematic manner.
What are they gonna do? Moan that he’s hit the ground running ? Complain he’s got more done in 24 hrs than they got done in 5 years of their majority ? They are terrified he might actually pull something off
@@stevejones7622 ah,yes… there you are! Right on cue! So who is to blame for the sorry state the country is in? Not Sunak or Boris, or even Lettuce Truss! Jeremy Corbin perhaps? Or are you taking a page from sunak and blaming the last labour government? Couldn’t fix it in 14 years so it must have been bad! Funny. I thought it was the Tories manifesto to draft children into the army , must say I missed the national service part in the labour manifesto.
I didn’t vote Labour but I’m so impressed! A real person, talking real words, that real people can understand! A total breath of fresh air and I’m ready glad he’s won even though it had nothing to do with me! 🤷♀️ If we can be patient & positive, we could actually see some change for the better 😮🥳👍🙏
Excellent start. No boasting, no bombast, no triumphalism. Fingers crossed! If they take as many kids out of poverty and turn the NHS around as well as the Brown/Blair government, I'll be satisfied. Keep supporting Ukraine, friendly but firm with Israel, better relations with the devolved governments and don't spend the whole time fighting with the opposition for the sake of a soundbite - I'm feeling quite optimistic about politics for the first time in years.
Its so nice to just get straight answers instead of all the endless waffle and hot air from the tories as they try to make a smokescreen for themselves.
As an American, there is such a world of difference in the clarity and ease with which Keir Starmer speaks compared to the inane babbling of Trump or the wandering fits and starts of Biden. If you ever get sick of Starmer, we'll take him. ❤🇬🇧🤍🇺🇸💙
Watching the US debate was difficult for everyone. The vacant stares, the lack of truth and integrity, the inability to coherently make a point without diverting onto pointless tangents. The US people deserve far better. In a country with as many bright and intelligent people, those are the only two? Really? Insanity - quite literally the definition of it.
@@High_Lord_Of_Terrait’s funny how Bernie is seen as a socialist / far left wing politician by many in the states whereas in the UK he’d probably be centre left if that
Wow! this is going to be a strong strong government. This PM is the rock that this country needed after 14 years of the circus that we had before. Professional politics has returned, a breeze of fresh air.
Starmer is a really different PM than Opposition leader. He'd have never talked about sentencing reform in opposition, probably for fear of being labelled as weak by the Tories. So glad he can finally focus on policy, not on optics.
As someone who has seen the Tories run the country from the age of 24-38, it was baffling to see a concrete plan on ANYTHING in the space of an hour from a politician after 14 years of nothing from the tories. The small statement of "We had a hospital that worked a few extra hours to cut waiting lists, and now they are sending out teams to do the same elsewhere" being noteworthy says it all...rather than just "Well, look, haha haha, blah blah" from the tories says it all.
Now this is what you call a PM omg its so refreshing to have a prime minister that answers all questions and not try to deflect just seeing this press conference shows Kier and labour are going to be excellent and hopefully we will never have conservatives in power ever again.
A few thousand on boats but the UK gave 323,000 Indians “student” and work visas just in the year 2023. The boats were only a drop in the bucket but guess which group Rishi Sunak wanted to demonise?
Passion!!!! He stopped the person who was asking him a question because he was hungry, hard-working and therefore Great Britain, United Kingdom as an England Priminister.
He's right about the NHS. GP services are currently a carrier to accesing care. Community Health and Care Services are not organised or resourced to deliver care in people's homes. These things need to be addressed if we expect acute hospitals to deliver on their part of the NHS vision.
It feels very strange to hear someone actually _answering_ questions instead of deflecting by repeating "I've been very clear..." followed by an assortment of irrelevances.
I'd have asked when do MP's take their seats, and if one side of the House can accommodate 65% of Members? How's it going to look - Labour MP's all piled atop eachother on the government benches, across from sprawling Tories with enough legroom to do the fully horizontal Mogg? That and, what's the policy on working from home?
I really hope this man can make England great again. For everyone's sake. funding for NHS get appointment wait times down ect tackle child poverty and help everyone live a better life without struggling or having to choose between food or paying bills!! Raising income and national wage and actually use tax payers money where it should be going! I'm so glad labour won its about time!! 🎉
This is what we’ve got for 5 years till farage gets in more charisma in my toe means nothing of what he’s saying he’s constantly reading off a script ffs
What focus group is giving you all the term “delivery”? Truss and Sunak parroted it constantly (and did nothing while doing so). Why would you want to associate yourself with that?
Competent and Boring. All the qualities I want in a PM. I look forward in not reading about him every day or the drama surrounding his party. Yawns all the way and hopefully some results will come.
That exit was awkward Edit: Just to clarify that, I support Starmer (the replies are making me look like a Tory sympathiser which is one of the worst things to look like), it's just awkward that a journalist tried to ask another question when he was leaving
