@@ShrinkRaptor 1st I am a drummer, and studied all the way through school. 2nd I know Keith. 3rd, not every drummer (even the great ones) are as creative as Keith. I am not going to mention any who I believe are not very creative soloists. It's an argument that NO one is interested in. I'll just leave it with Keith is, to me, one of the great living drummers, in every category.
Literally my favorite drum solo for more than 15 years. Carlock is playing music, not only drums. I have now been trying to reproduce this for a while, without ever being able to master it... that left foot play is, to me, the hidden secret of that groove.
I've come back to watch this solo many times. The sound is unbelievable that it's just a single drummer. His flams create a sound of an entire drum line playing. I can't say I've ever seen anybody match his tone and style.
Nobody but nobody plays like this guy, he truly has created his own style, his own sound, his own feel, and all insanely original. The sensitivity is astounding. Barely know what to say other than the music world is enriched by his presence. Period.
It's one thing to watch and listen to a drummer who has lightning fast hands and feet, but to have style and feel and be funky and soulful is the magic. Keith has it all.
Keith....in a class by himself. This is just pure drumming of a mix of old school, new school....Keith school. A bass drum foot in a class by itself! Just amazing. Utter respect for the work and passion to get at this level..
No doubt. But consider this: At this very same drum festival, Jojo Mayer gave his most famous performance. The king of mad chops and robotic phrasing done right.
One of very few drummers I can tolerate soloing. He's so fluid and smooth and creative it's hard not to love his playing. He is on a VERY short list of soloing drummers who is melodic and musical. Weckl, Sucherman, Smith and Dicenso are some of my other faves.
I wonder what Buddy Rich, would say about Keith? Probably would still think he is so much better? The way I see it drummers like Keith & Steve Gadd can actually play solo’s, where they can show off their magnificent chops which are so highly skilled and developed. Keith & Steve can put it all into a musical drum solo performance which is so tasteful and certainly not egotistical with their awesome drumming skills in other words, a joy to listen to!...that’s the real talent, actually it’s not just playing drums, but playing drums as a musical instrument which it should be respected for.
All that Talent. All that Practice. All that Time. All that sacrifice, Travel, Family etc. I wonder if the Money is there for all this, especially as you Age???!!!
just mad brilliant. the tones he was getting off that snare, come on. i hear Virgil in his rudiments and ghosting. or i hear Keith in Virgil's playing. either way. skillz.
That's not very nice. Keith's weight has gone up and down over the years, like with most of us--whatever--he is a great guy, and a master musician. Be not funny somewhere else, huh?
So musical, so pleasant and so beautiful. It has been a long time since I saw an incredible solo such as this. I came to know that Keith Carlock is the one who played on records for 'Desert Rose' by Sting. Amazing drummer.
Who the F wouldn’t like this? If you didn’t like this spin, you don’t play. Keith brings an amazing feel and incredible elements to solos- like Steve Jordan, Gadd and other greats. He’s one of the all-time best.
Yeah he plays that stick so far back toward the butt. Dave Weckl too. I cannot get the balance in my left hand playing that far back. But, everyone's different.
@@user-np2td3lg7t Those are BIG BOY flams for sure! Did you see that Cindy Blackman instinctual dvd from like 12 to 15 years ago? At that point she wasn't just copin' TW she was straight channeling him.
He would have been in his element, back when there was respect for jazz chops on the drums for rock and pop tunes. Now everything is programmed drum machines.
He has a southern feel to his playing. The first time I heard him I thought, "is he from Louisiana?" Close! From Mississippi. There's a soulful feel that comes out of there and he's got it - along with massive technique of course.
I am so glad I stumbled upon this vid. With this solo, Keith puts on show for all to see how original his playing is, his unusual grip of the stick (especially his right hand), his ability to resist instantly "flying off the handle" in some ridiculous attempt to drum faster than the speed of sound that plagues so may modern drummers, which allows people to settle into the groove with him, and only then to dazzle them with more intricate variations on the pattern chosen, and again focussed on musicality rather than speed driven acrobatics, much like Gadd does, but never imitating the man. Hats off to you, Keith!
I love the thematic development. Really nice concepts and chops. It is so good because it is saying something and not just chops for their own sake. Thank you. Bravo.
Keith totally blows that bullshit about drums not being 'proper' musical instruments, clean out of the water with his supremely dynamic playing. This is musical, melodic drumming executed at a very high level...
It’s funny to watch different drummers and the way they play. Some make it look so easy. And some look like they are working hard. This guy makes some funny faces, but man this is a kick ass solo. Very nice.
I Still can't believe I never got to meet Keith Carlock at Drumtek & I went to DrumTek most times in the year 1998 when I was 9 years old,,, & the year 2010,,, that is Disappointing🤔🤔🤔???...
TOP!!! for soul sentiment. original and never predictable; a real dialogue between bass drum and the rest. as a group of people during a meeting ...something happen you never know. He is telling us a story; a description of an event. He is speaking.
@@seppoinnanen5577 he said he sat down at a brooklyn kit at a drum convention and was convinced immediately it was what he wanted to play... that may or may not be true... gretsch could have offered him a spicy deal, but i really dont hear the brooklyns sounding anywhere near as good as the PHX from yamaha... was a downgrade imo and keith always sounded better on the yamahas
I remember seeing Keith carlock with steely dan as a double header with Steve winwood Keith came on stage before becker fagan and the rest of the band to check the sound on his drums and a woman sitting next to me thought he was a drumtek just happy to have a tap on the drums before the so called real drummer came out and was surprised that he was the actual drummer for steely dan
Some drum solos while great, lack the soul and the feel and become clinical and boring quickly. Keith's solo shows the enthusiasm and passion for the drums. Great stuff!!!!!
Very precise and delicate drummer with great stage presence. I first watched his performance on Modern Drummer 2005 DVD and loved his style from the first site. Keith has mastered this beat and he plays it so well, that every time I see this video, I watch it through the end. Great drummer!!!
