In June 1989, Keith Haring created the 180-square meter mural on the back wall of the St. Antonio Abate church in Pisa. It one of the few outdoor public works created by Haring for permanent display.
It is also one of the last public murals executed before his death from AIDS-related complications in 1990.
This project was made possible by the insight and passion for art of Piergiorgio Castellani who invited Keith to Pisa and organised the necessary permits for the miracle to take place.
I was then working at VideoMusic and went to Pisa to interview Keith while, he and his team of Italian friends, were finishing the art piece. Here is an excerpt from that interview.
