Rosberg's 1978 win at Silverstone non-GP in torrential rain, with a THEODORE (which was basically a F2 car) is one of the most amazing feats in F1 history. Watch that race, it's on RU-vid. All big names like Lauda, Andretti, Hunt spun right away but Rosberg won the race with that POS car in absolutely insane conditions. People think Senna's 1993 Donnington drive with a TOP CAR that had advanced TC. That Theodore was a rattling antique car and so slow in dry that it didn't even qualify to the races normally. Also 1983 Williams and 1984 Williams (with extremely bad chassis) were completely uncompetitive cars and yet Rosberg took 2 wins with those. Beat Laffite (who was no slouch) 15-1 and 14-2 in 83 and 84. 1985 he completely dominated his teammate Nigel Mansell and his Kyalami charge that year is memorable. Hell of a driver and anyone who understands something about F1 holds him in very high regard.
When Keke came to New Zealand in 77 and 78 , my best mate and I were captivated by his amazing style. He spent nearly as much time on the grass as he did on the track. His 77 team-mate was Mikko Kozarowitzky who was really rated. Keke buried him. In 78 , it was Bobby Rahal. He’s a legend now but Rahal was blown away by Keke. “ Mr Opposite Lock “ was incredible and won the title both years. The point is that he could handle almost anybody when he had a competitive car.
He spent the first 7 years of his 9-year F1 career driving cars that were anywhere from 4th to 18th (not a typo) best, including some absolute all-time shitboxes, and still came out of this period with 11 podiums, 3 wins and a WDC. Not to mention numerous spectacular performances where he miraculously dragged an underpowered car into a far higher position than he ever had a right to. Yet there are a lot of uncultured folk out there who give this man no credit whatsoever.
Indeed. And people say that he was a "street circuit specialist". That's BS. The only chance to win with those sh*tboxes were the street circuits. 1985 he had a fast car and FIVE (yes FIVE) first place technical DNF's that year. He made Mansell look like an amateur in 1985. Monza 1985 a good example.
Another great video and a worthy subject. Rosberg, was a flat out type driver who did not hold back. 1986, involved an element of fuel conservation that he did not seem to comprehend or adapt to. His time in Group C with Peugeot, was much the same, he didn't get it. Like Usain Bolt, in a marathon. I will say, he was good in DTM and his style would suit modern WEC and GT competition. My favourite Rosberg, moment was when he double teamed Senna, with Mansell at Brands '85, for Nigel's first win.
I always respected him for his "big balls" style of driving. I especially remember when Senna pushed him off the circuit and Keke ran him down and gave young Ayrton a real driving lesson. Ayrton never did it again to him.
And on top of that Keke with that moustache, long hair, Marlboros and those Ray-Bans makes him cooler looking guy than all F1 drivers combined in the last 20 years. LOL.
Worth noting , for 1986 Rosberg ran out of fuel in Hockenheim, just like Prost , and slowed down in Spain,. Apart from that , every other DNF was due to electricals or engine, I would say that Mclaren team was preparing those cars appallingly Because Lauda has same issues in 85.
Apparently his battles with Gilles Villeneuve in North American Formula Atlantic, circa 1975/76 were the stuff of legends. Ironic that he should have won the 1982 World Championship, which Gilles would have 'walked' had it not been for his death at Zolder.
Watch Long Beach 1982 battle between Villeneuve and Rosberg. Villeneuve had a superior car with insane power advantage. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kwDc-XUuVRE.html
Watch Long Beach 1982 the battle between Villeneuve and Keke. Villeneuve had like 200 hp more powerful, superior car and he always overtook Keke on the straights. That's a great battle between two hardcore old school drivers.
He was compared to Villeneuve early in his career - although not many thought him a match. They had the same driving style, but whilst Villeneuve often ended his race by going too hard, Rosberg rarely made that mistake. Both were magnificent to watch race
@@WhenF1WasReal watched them race each other in formula Atlantic at Westwood racetrack Vancouver bc canada. Best race I've ever seen anywhere.track sadly houses now
@@WhenF1WasReal rivals contemporaries and freinds as much as there careers would allow it seemed to me in the formula Atlantic pits at least no idea layer of course.
True. They were both very hard on cars. But unlike Nigel Keke didn't crash often. I only remember 1983 Long Beach. A race he could have won but crashed on Tambay when he took a very risky overtake attempt. Another time when he drove out was Kyalami 1985 when he hit an oil spot. The charge after that is one of the most spectacular I've ever seen. That's what Frank Williams said too. Watch it.
@@kekepiket9153 Murray Walker once said that Keke had the only F1 car in history that had the ashtray option installed. LOL. Of course it was a joke but funny.
While I was too young to remember Keke's exploits in F1 (I was 1 the year he retired) I do remember the sort of sneering contempt some drivers espoused when they mentioned Keke's World Championship making it out to be he only won one GP in his entire career and got a Championship out of it. But the more I read about the absolute mess that the 1982 season was, you have to respect any consistency in a championship that was plagued by inconsistency. And when I got to watch some of the extended highlights he was a dogged bastard who drove the wheels off the damn thing. Him and Mansell definitely had a flair for recovering the car from a spin and I wonder if he managed to give Mansell some tips on how to control the car when it's spun - I don't know. My feeling is if he didn't go to McLaren which judging from Frank Dernie's recent comments on Facebook there wasn't just the fact that he couldn't deal with a car that demanded more finesse than ragged driving but that at Williams he was free to say whatever he liked even if it was before he got the facts - at a team with Ron Dennis at the helm, corporate sponsors probably put it to Ron, which I think he duly did, that there would be financial penalties, should Keke speak out of turn and therefore he seemed to withdraw more and more in the wake of de Angelis' crash. PS No matter how many times I see it, I'm surprised Pironi only came away with the injuries that he did and nothing worse.
Keke had the fourth or fifth fastest car in 1982. Renault, Brabham, Ferrari and even McLaren were superior cars. McLaren is debatable though. But it was AT MOST the 4th fastest car. Winning the WDC with that inferior car is pretty much the same if someone won the WDC with an Aston Martin today. 1985 was the only year he had a fast, competitive car. But five 1st place DNF's that year. Two wins though and he made Mansell look like a complete amateur. Watch the season, he was incredibly fast.
Ah yes, Nico's Dad. An unlikely 1982 champ who yoinked the dub in the Drivers' Standings after big names, one-by-one fall short. Despite The Italian Stallions winning Team Standings. Also, RIP The OG guy who Lotus, Collin Chapman. Also RIP OG Ground Effects.
Commento very stupido, Keke Rosberg very good driver very strong spectacular Racer Rosberg Gilles Villeneuve acrobatic duel in Formula Atlantic, no tu stupid Keke very driver
Rosberg's 1982 Williams had 150-200 horsepower LESS than the top cars. Do you understand this? It was a non-turbo car with an antique Cosworth engine. He won the title with superb driving and consistency. That car was 5 seconds SLOWER on Hockenheim than Ferraris and Brabhams. If you don't understand what an amazing feat that championship was, you don't understand much about F1. It's pretty much the same if someone won the WDC with an Aston Martin today.
The question of Rosberg`s quality as a driver should be an eliminating question for real F1 fans. If you think he was not worth it , you should try some other sport .
To me personally he was one of the most underrated drivers in history he was a talent who knew how to drive in any weather and disadvantaged by many unreliable cars.
Infatti tu di corse non ci capisci niente e molto probabilmente Keke Rosberg non lo hai mai visto correre, altrimenti non diresti certe scemenze era un Gilles Villeneuve con più testa
You are way of the mark all he ever burned out was rear tyres he highlight real is enormous every team enjoyed his uncomplicated manor no baggage no bullshit style
@@rencelani-ty2sc Really so in 1986 when he was at McLaren he finished 8 races of 16 so 50%DNF and Prost retired in 2 races and won the championship. Are you going to blame the car? I was watching F1 very closely back then I remember Keke the car destroyer.
