The more I see things like this and the crap happening in life today, the more I appreciate having a carbine/rifle of the same ammo and/or magazine to go with your sidearm. I have a whole new appreciation for the leveraction and revolver combo, or the modern equivalent.
GBY ---my friend. I want to say thanks for your service in the Marines and as LEO. Thanks for the protection you and your brothers give us. Stay safe and thanks for sharing
I love my keltec sub 2000 2nd gen HR in 9mm . It is accurate and reliable folds into my bugout bag and complements my Glock 19 using same magazines . Only upgrade is rmr that perfectly co witnesses with the stock sights . It has run flawlessly with multiple ammo choices . Great review! K
Thanks for addressing the "Tommy tactical" backpack, it was bothering me up until you acknowledged it lol. I keep mine in a very plain-looking Jansport backpack and it also works just great.
The Sub 2K Gen 2 has a lot going for it. Out of the box, mine was dead-on accurate and fired flawlessly. But if you're picky, you will likely find that they are a little rough around the edges when it comes to some of the details. I got such a good deal on mine (
I bought a sub-2000 generation 2 about a week ago. Same thing if fired perfectly right out of the box I took it from the store straight to the firing range, I shot maybe 200 rounds out of it and it was so accurate I didn't even have to adjust the sites at forty yards thirty yards or something ☺️👍🍀❤️❤️❤️
Well said brother and great set up. I have many different pcc bags ready to go. But the sub2000 bag is the smallest and lightest. It's the easiest to carry. People who say 40 is crap wouldn't say that nonsense if they were on the wrong side of it. Great video sir
I love my sub 2000. I also installed the MCarbo trigger, rear sight, flip up red dot mount, and rear tube cover. It ate every ammunition I fed through it and I wasn't having trouble. But I wanted something more durable that I can depend on. I love what polymers do for firearms but not polymer trigger. It now fires like a dream and is very accurate. I also recommend you buy the sub 2000 Gummy Bear protector. It's 17 bucks and it's a piece of plastic that covers the barrel and chamber when the rifle is folded. It prevents Gummy bears from falling into the action when stored in a back pack. Hence the name. Also an added advantage with a PCC is in any active situation you may encounter pistol cartridges tend to not travel like a rifle cartridge. So less chance of you shooting grandma down the block in exchange of fire. It keeps the rounds more localized. It's why it's my preferred home defense rifle. I love this rifle. For self defense at home, as camp gun. Hiking gun, and it fits wonderfully in motorcycle saddle bags. Paired with 33 round magazine it's a formidable weapon.
How long did it take for them to send your kel tec back with the upgrades? I’m thinking about getting an upgrade on mine..but after 4 years is it worth it? Is the upgrade that noticeable? You know how the trigger is out the box right?! It’s like waiting for the light to turn green at a red light when you’re pressing the trigger 😂
I have one in the Glock magazine model 17 so far it has been flawless , its in a pack with the pistol , there are a lot of upgrades on the market for the sub 2000 now , looking forward to part 2
I have the Keltec sub 2000 second generation Glock 19 configuration. And my preferred sidearm is the Glock 19. And I carry it in a backpack also. With about ten 33 round magazine's.
This is a very informative video. I wish that responsible firearms owners in Britain would be allowed to concealed carry with adequate and appropriate training. I'm from London and in the 1970's and 1980's there were too many pointless terrorist attacks on very many targets claiming many innocent victims; one that sticks in my mind was the Tower of London bombing in the mid-70's where eight children were horrifically injured. On different occasions armed members of terrorist groups were chased through London by usually unarmed Police Officers and definitely unarmed civilians. If trained people had been on the streets then perhaps the deaths of many people could have been avoided. My Dad was a Policeman in London but we moved to Norfolk after a man held a gun to my Dad's face and pulled the trigger. For some inexplicable reason the round failed to detonate and my Dad was able to batter the man into surrendering with nothing but his left fist and his wooden truncheon. Years later, in the depths of rural Norfolk, a man opened fire on my Dad with a single-barreled .410 shotgun. The man fumbled a reload and my Dad was able to subdue him. All of the above took place before the banning of semi-automatic long arms and normal sized pistols. Nowadays terrorists use vehicles, machetes, knives but rarely guns in our cities but still the Police Officers are expected to, and do, put themselves between those desiring harm and those that the Police have sworn to protect. How different it might all be if highly trained civilians (ex-military, ex-police and well vetted firearms owners) were allowed to bear weapons to protect the public. Would the monsters who murdered Fusilier Lee Rigby have chanced death to attack a defenceless man? I think we might have found them less ardent in their desires if several bullets into their centre mass had been on the cards rather than life in prison. May I say in closing that I enjoy all of your videos very much indeed. Thank you.
I have a great deal of respect for the police officers in your country. There is no way I would do the job if I was not afforded adequate tools to perform my duties safely. Yet most officers officers in the UK hit the streets every day without the benefit of firearms. The dangers are all still there, regardless of there devotion to duty. When I was in London in 2012, some criminal called in a false report to the local police station. When two officers responded, he ambushed them with an AK47 and hang grenades. So much for the fallacy of gun control. Thanks for watching, and thanks for a great comment. I hope your government comes around at some point and affords it’s citizens the means to defend themselves. Your country is to great to be sacrificed on the alter of failed social policies.
A 9mm Parabellum loaded with a 124 grain JHP bullet shot from a 16 inch barrel carbine is almost equal to a 357 Magnum loaded with a 125 JHP bullet shot from a 4 inch barrel revolver. A 40 S&W loaded with a 155 grain JHP bullet shot from a 16 inch barrel carbine is at least equal to a 10mm Auto loaded with a 155 grain bullet shot from a 5 inch barrel handgun.
I bought my first gen 2 S2K a few years ago (9mm glock mags) and just picked up a second one last weekend. They are great little carbines. I take one in a backpack in the truck when driving.
I paired my P226 with a Sub-2000 configured for a 5906 by swapping the mag catch. Shared mags is the #1 feature for me. The mag being in the grip makes it an even easier decision
Wonderful video. My S2K is one of my favorites to shoot. It's 100% stock and spits out anything...at least 2000 rounds through it. A range-buddy competes with his and it's also stock w/ a red-dot.
Outstanding Howard I have purchased a sub 2000 gen II 9mm Glock Mag based on your review of this Firearm. I use this to Dispatch Wild Hogs in a corral trap.
I love my sub 2000. It's chambered just like an M&P 40. I have yet to have a misfire. It has been very reliable for me. And since I already had a bunch of M&P 40 magazines this worked out perfect. I am not sure how accurate this is. But I have been told that I am gaining about 250 to 300 feet per second. Good point about the backpack I went out and found a single strap laptop bag that was designed to carry an 19 inch Laptop. Holds several magazines and I can still put my M&P 40 in there too.
Mr. Funk you just talked me into ordering a keltec through vances. Working in a hospital as a police officer limits me to what I can carry and i think this will be perfect for my duty bag.
@@hrfunk the ruger pc9 has been good but doesn't conceal as well as the keltec will. So I will let you know after my first range visit. I will most likely set it up exactly how you have yours.
Again, you have made informative video. I always feel like I'm a little light with just a pistol and a couple of mags. I realize I can't carry a 30.06 or AR 15 while in public. I carry IWB always. Thanks for another great video.
glad I found this video...after a multiple firearm sell-off to prevent a financial debacle I am considering this as an affordable basic PCC; my beretta cx-4 & ruger 10/22 compact flew the coop...offset is I preserved my ruger mini-14! I still dislike the idea of 223/5.56 inside my townhouse as a defensive caliber...too much noise & percussion! a 9mm carbine makes sense in this 'in-between' role...
Looking forward to it ! You made a wise choice for sure . I get your heads up on new content . I’m doing my own testing on new glock 19 gen 5 mos and I’m so far very impressed with results with the venom rmr mounted . Yesterday’s results at 15 yards 98% A hits out of 100 rounds. I just couldn’t put it down . Next range trip moving out 20 to 25 yards and beyond over time , to see where it drops off in accuracy. Glock changed a lot of things on gen 5 Hr makes it more shootable , at least for me . Another project is a new sig 229r in 40s&w along with sig 225A1 in 9mm both have night sights and Srt triggers , only have 100 rounds through each gun no issues and phenomenal accuracy. K
I've always liked the sub 2000 concept but like you, faulted the execution of it. If you find that they finally got it right you will be selling a lot of sub 2000's for them and we will finally have the carbine we've always wanted. As always, great job, thanks.
Frank Van Dornis: What is it that you fault them for? I have an original Gen1 purchased very shortly after they introduced them. I've easily shot 1000+ rounds through it - without a single failure. Yes, the trigger is rough and the sights are rudimentary. BUT, even with those shortcomings, I can shoot 1-2 MOA groups at 50 yards all day long; something I can not do with a pistol. For what it is and what it's intended purpose is - the Sub2000 is a great firearm and Kel-Tec is a reliable, customer-friendly, company. Be well, Doc
@@donabele1243From videos I've seen by other testers, reliability has been spotty, So I'm not saying they're all bad, I just need to see more good results. I do hope H.R.'s test comes out well because i like the concept and really want one. I'm glad to hear that you've had good results, It's encouraging to me.
M TODD: I have the Sub2000 and a PF9 and have not had a single issue with either of them - they have both performed flawlessly without a single failure in either. My PF9 was my daily EDC for over two years with hundreds of rounds through it. I only 'retired' it when I switched to a Shield in .40. It's still in my EDC safe, for whenever I need something smaller than my Shield. Be well, Doc
Doc , When I was 21 & looking for a first hand gun . I was looking at a keltec the guy at the gun store told me they were garbage . That was about 25 years ago , bought a colt 1991 . This was before the internet & cell phones were a big thing . Take care .
Doc , Nope not when I was 21 , it was when I was looking for another pistol or , a less expensive rifle about 20 years ago , not 25 years . I was in that gun shop looing at firearms , like they were candy . I hate having CRS (cant remember sh*t) .
I have a few Mcarbo aftermarket parts for one of my keltec sub2ks. I have the the recoil ring that goes in the buffer tube and the heavier charging handle. I highly recommend these two things if you think the recoil is a little rough
Ar500 armor makes unassuming backpacks with body armor built-in with the option of level 3a soft armor or level 3+ steel armor. It'd easily hold the sub2000 and you would have some armor that you can throw in front of you
They really don’t. You’re not hiding anything with the greyman lines sold by firearms accessories companies. Even the Duluth bag featured in this video screams that he’s trying too hard to blend in. He looked around for cues of what’s normal and his environment is apparently the local conservation club. And having the same haircut (which looks really sharp, btw) from his service days is icing on the cop. We all live in bubbles.
Even though kel-tec seems like more of a showgun, fun range gun company I respect what they do as far as their unusual concepts. I am going to purchase a sub 2000 and P17 as a side arm. I think they would make a great (affordable) tactical response/ bug out setup for around $750. 9mm 22lr readily available and (affordable)
Come on man! I’m a 25 year army vet. At the age of 62 I feel I’m in my prime when it comes to shooting. Just had to pick on you. Lol. Enjoy watching your channel.
...funny you should mention this - a week ago a 'good guy' DID Stop a 'bad guy' - in a crowded mall - and with 10 shots - 8 of which hit the perp who was rendered DRT...
Yep ... you did the same type of research & thinking I did 2 yrs ago. I have the Kel-Tec Sub 2000 Gen2 in 9mm with S&W M&P mags, which is matched to my M&P 9 & 9c. This way I can use the 12 mag for the 9C in concealment and the 17rd'ers as back-up to both platforms. Then again ... 30+ rd mags work well for both also. As stated by other respondents .... my Kel-Tec has been SPOT-on right out of the box with the std sights. As for issues of customer service .... Kel-Tec was the one that told me about the "barrel" issue. At no cost to me they took care of replacing the barrel. AND ... when it came back ... with the 1st (5) rd's fired ... it was DEAD-on. I would have thought there would be some front sight adjustment needed, but nada. As others ... I'm looking forward to Part 2, but I think I know what the outcome will be. Thanks for serving on both fronts. Keep up the good work.
I just got back from a 4 day camping trip with a religious group. My Sub2k was on my back the WHOLE TIME, except when I was in the shower. Sub2k gets much better groups at 25-50 yards than I could with my pistol.
Hrfunk. SIR Yet again you evoke the thought process. I carry on the job and off-duty all the time. But to be completely honest NEVER ONCE have ever considered employing such a weapons platform as you've illustrated off-duty. Recently as I'm sure you are aware of the Shooting that took place at a Jewish synagogue in Pittsburgh,Pa. That event occurred an hour from my residence. So yeah with this current events happening in this nation, your concept is must definitely VALID.
As an Active Threat Response instructor for police officers, this is a topic that I nearly obsess over. Every time I hear about one of these incidents, I take it somewhat personally. I always feel like "if I was just there" or "If I could have trained some of the people who WERE there". Every time it happens it feels kind of like I have failed in some way. I guess this video is a way of conveying some of my thoughts to a larger audience. Maybe I'll feel like I did a better job the next time around if an armed good guy intervenes and reduces the number of innocent casualties.
I’m not terribly familiar with it, but at first glance it appears to be an NFA restricted firearm. It also generally looks like a bulkier package than the S2K. I also suspect it is considerably more expensive.
If you truly value the advantages the G2 Sub2000 offers than you'll LOVE the Survivor-1 from Ballistipax with the Sub2000 holster! The combo of G19/23 with the Sub2K and the added ballistic protection will be a game changer for anyone who is willing to defend themselves and others.
noted sir! I just can't get past the sights. In a tense situation, I fear that front sight is going to catch on something and be damaged. The ability to mount an optic can be done, but you have to get an add on "flip" mount to make it work. I agree that a long arm is better, you get 4-5 points of contact with it. I just do not trust that thing and think it is not as well thought out as the S&W M&P fpc. Time will tell and it is just the opine of a normal blue collar man that has been shooting most of his life. I am no expert on anything. Peace and Grace Sir and keep doing what you do. I do enjoy your videos.
Thanks for the video, which is a little different and very informative. Bravo. It's interesting to get a LEO's take on the Sub 2000. I agree with you on every point you make and it seems to me it's a HECK of a lot better as a go-to firearm when things go bad in a mall or a school than a standard pistol. Can you see a use for it in law enforcement? Perhaps with a three-round burst option added as well? Surely it's portability alone makes it worth considering since it would be very easy to store inside a Crown Vic or even smaller police vehicles? Would it be useful for motorcycle officers/Border Patrol members etc. on quads/cops on bicycles? I wonder if we will see it in other calibres, eventually, too: .357 Magnum would be interesting, or it's close 'cousin' .30 Carbine. The M1 Carbine fulfilled an imporant role using just that hardhitting round in the past for police forces in several countries and in that calibre and this configuration law enforcement would have a folding rifle which reaches out to 100 yards easily. Best wishes, and stay safe!
For most LE uses, I think the AR platform is superior. Where the S2K really shines is in roles where it has to be carried in the least amount of space such as brief cases and/or back packs, etc. missions like dignitary protection and SRO duties where the appearance of any black rifle might cause undue anxiety, the S2K can be carried more easily in less space than any other long gun I could find. Folded, it is essentially the same length as the AR from the end of the buffer tube to the front of the receiver (in other words, it’s the length of an AR with no barrel). I carry mine in my brief case just about every day, and its presence is quite reassuring. I’m not sure that we will see a .357 or .30 carbine variant of the S2K. The greater length of those two cartridges would probably necessitate a good deal of design re-engineering. I agree with you though, the idea of an S2K chambered for one of those cartridges has a lot of appeal. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
I recently purchased a sub 2000 Gen 2 9mm. It takes the glock magazines so I now have a reason to purchase a glock for magazine compatibility. I currently have a cz75 and a s&w shield in 9mm so I will probably trade my cz in and buy a glock...makes me wince just thinking about it. Lol. But for the compatibility I think it'll be worth it. I have shot between 150 and 200 rounds from the sub 2000 out to 100yards and not only was I able to hit the targets fairly easy but I was able to fire rapidly and hit the target several times. I'm not a trained police officer or sniper by any stretch but I believe I can defend myself and those around me if need be and I can do it effectively with the sub 2000.
I have a nice laptop case that accommodates up to a 17" laptop with accessories OR, after watching this video, my Gen2 Sub2K and 5 of the Glock 18 mags. I opted for the 9mm to pair with my Glock 17 and 19, but am looking for a 40 S&W variant as well. Thanks for the thought provoking video.
Very great review Sir!!! Thank you for your service!!! God bless you!!! I'm in Texas and a friend is selling me one.Im excited!!! All legally.Thank you.New subby.Merry Christmas to you and yours Sir!!!😃⛄🎄
I liked my kel-tec sub 2000... but have switched it out for a Ruger PC charger. The charger weighs a little more but when I pull it out of my laptop bag it is ready to go. I don't have to unfold it and chamber a round. It is about the same length as a folded kel-tec so it fits easily in a laptop bag.
hey @hrfunk, if that sub 2000 doesn't work out for you, I highly recommend the ruger pc carbine. I know you like the MP line of pistols and that ruger does not currently offer that particular mag well, I feel that someone will release a mag well for it soon, it will be something that I will for sure be keeping an eye on. Just thought I would throw that out there in case that kel tec does not work out. Thanks for the awesome content!!!
In Nj in 1990 when there was very draconian semi auto enacted , since moderated made the springfield m1a was allowed to be grandfathered in. I had to pay a 100 dollar fee. I later found out that 1/2 went to the state administrativefees. The other 1/2 went tot he state violent crime victims compensation fund. So I paid intot he same fund as convicted rapists and murderers. This made me feeel not good.
Looking forwards to your next video on the Kel-tec sub 2000. I have often wondered about the velocity factor of pistol carbines compared to rifle calibers.
I recently purchased a sub2000. I noted many things I did not like on it and looked for solutions. Mcarbo in Clearwater, Fla. offers retrofit parts for the sub 2000 which makes it a totally "new" weapon. I replaced everything inside and out to the tune of over 850. dollars. The sub2000 now shoots like a dream and with the new Mcarbo optic mount and a Sig Sauer Romer 5 red dot...….. life is good and I really enjoy going to the range. Check out Mcarbo.com as they are great people to deal with and customer service is second to none.
I’ve been looking at Ruger’s PC Carbine for a while. They’re chambered for 9mm and .40 S&W. While they don’t fold open as quickly as the Kel Tec, they do go together in a few seconds. Some might argue those few seconds could make a difference...
I considered the Ruger PC, but opted for the Kel-Tec because of the quicker deployment characteristic, its more compact folded dimensions, and the comparability with my M&P magazines. I’m sure the Ruger is a fine carbine, but I just thought the Sub2K met my needs better.
Here is the major issue with this thing. If its not secured to you. Like a ccw handgun would be. Its available to a child. If it is made to be unavailable to a child. It takes too long to deploy.
I just installed a Rear Tactical Sights. It raises the rear sight up just enough to make it work pretty well for a cheek weld. Worth the money. From MCarbo.
I have the gen 2 with the muzzle brake, tube cover, charging handle upgrade, butt pad. All have made noticeable difference, made it more fun to shoot for sure than just bone stock. The folding sight is my next investment. I do wonder about the trigger upgrade though.. it gets great reviews
If you SBR that sub 2k then you’re able to conceal under a sport coat without printing and sagging. I’m going with the Ruger Charger 9mm pistol with Glock magazine adapter.
Thanks for the video. I've been thinking about getting one. Right now they go for $370 plus shipping. BTW, I may be wrong, but I thought that a concealed weapon permit only covers handguns, in most states. Carrying a rifle concealed is illegal. Am I wrong?
No, you are correct. My target audience for these videos are armed professionals who ma legally carry such a firearm. Please don’t do anything that would cause you to run afoul of the law.
When those laws were made in most states that say “any firearm longer than 16 inches is considered a rifle”, in addition “Concealed Carry Licenses apply to handguns only”. I’m not entirely sure how those laws would be applied to a weapon technically considered a rifle, but when folded can be concealed like a handgun. I guess we’re gonna have to wait foe that 1st case with someone carrying one concealed in a backpack huh 🤔
HR, this seems like one of your more popular videos, would you consider revisiting this firearm, possibly with some aftermarket upgrades? Warm regards!
Thank you! I don’t know if you’re aware, but I have several other videos based on the Sub2000. They were all made around the same time as this one, but I did cover some upgrades. Interestingly, my S2K is currently with me on a trip. I’m carrying it in that same backpack.
A very well done video. I suspect a M1 Carbine in a truck gun mode only might also meet the niche. A subtech is also good for competition target shooting. I would like them to generate a 10 mm Subtech 2000 or carbine mode. You thought this out very much in depth. Good job.
Thank you. I’m interested to see how the 40 S&W performs when I shoot it over the chronograph. It might just generate velocities close to those of the 10mm, albeit from a pistol.
Should do another video of the M version Mcarbo makes with the weighted charging handle, taller peep sight, cheek pad, butt pad, muzzle break, aluminum trigger guard, bigger mag release, trigger upgrade, etc.
Well, HR, great presentation! I look at this as a "get home" bag. My reason being? You are a former LEO. , thus, you would have an I.D. that would be accepted readily I hope? Civilians are held in a different view. First, many places won't allow backpacks due to shoplifters! Then Police are not going to be to gracious when they question us regarding why we are carrying this? Still, I am anxious to view part 2! Great video, Thank-you!
Thank you! Truthfully, the two places I worry about the most are schools and shopping malls/centers (especially around the holidays, hence the timing of this video). I think the idea of a “get home” bag is a good one. For non-LE folks, your primary concern should be your safety and that of your family. For me, I’ve been at this game too long to turn and run. Somebody has to stop the goblin in his tracks before he hurts too many innocent people.
@@hrfunk I'm not going seeking out an active hooter! However, if I'm looking at him Its a different story. My loved ones are most important! I was listening to Clint Smith from Thunder Ranch. He may have suprised some folks, but even though you protect your family, YOU are the most important person at that time! If you go down that leave family or others vulnerable! Sounds harsh at first, but true. Yes, get to a safe place. Shopping malls especially soft targets during the holidays heading for the exit probably will get you trampled to death. Lot of things are in this equation, which you are aware of. In Florida, can't have this on school property. Ond of the biggest problems is cell phones! People walk in fron of cars going into the mall looking at phone! People don't look around to survey their surroundings. They don't know where emergency exits are? Some folkd think malls are safe because of Armed Security? So they don't carry in some places? Either carry your firearm everywhere, of sell it!
@@hrfunk If I'm alone, and seen people drop, I would have to do something! Family with me, get them to safety! Family, friends Drs. Office no one questions my carrying a gun. My clinic us retired folks go to has small 5"×7" placards on the very most back wall "no firearms allowed". One new employee there to a young gal that I had a gun? She never looked away from her task and replied, "Thats Walter he carry a gun everywhere". Lol. One more important point. Here in Florida "No Firearms Allowed" signs are disappearing! Good thing! Bad thing, looking like a Major Blue Wave Tuesday! I was involved with my hometown P.D. 40 years ago. Back then, 6 six round .38 revolver, (never fired), 12 spare rounds on guys belts. Night Sticks, then Mace. Today is a different world! Cops deserve six figure incomes! Best to ya',,,,!
