Kelly Clarkson performed Dolly Parton's I will always love you as a part of a Dolly Parton Tribute at the American Country Music awards 2022.
I was so curious to see if she stayed within the Dolly Parton realm of the song, or leaned more over to the Whitney Houston version. Either way, I wouldn't have been disappointed. But Kelly Clarkson did her own version, and destroyed it. In the best way possible ofc.

In case the title is confusing, I mean «destroys» in the best way possible. My subs know I LOVE Kelly, and she nails every song. Or *destroys* them. I just wanted to try an ambiguous title to see what happened. Hope you still enjoy the video.

I agree with you completely. Before Kelly got her own show, I was always saying, God, that woman should have her own show. And she should start each episode doing someone else's song. The reason being that she's always been 1 of my most favorite singers & entertainers. And I wanted her to show everybody what I already intuitively knew she had in her. And that's to sing anything, as though it were her own handwritten song, & was a brand new song that's never been heard before. That's honestly how I've always felt about her music & could hear in voice every time she sang. Just amazing. Like my late sister with the same name, their name suited them both very well. They are "Warriors". They fight with all they got, & don't let anybody push them around. Don't take shit from nobody. Way to go, Kelly! :)

I can honestly say that Kelly's version of "I Will Always Love You" is the absolute best that I've ever heard! It was so powerful in it's simplicity and emotional delivery! Everyone says that Whitney was the best, but I thought she sang it too forcefully and it wasn't very smooth. Kelly's emotional and heartfelt delivery took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes. No other artist gets to me the way that Kelly Clarkson does. She is perfection! ❤

I think this song, overall, is one of the few songs that can truly showcase vocal giftedness. Dolly's version is totally Dolly, but a lot of us didn't know what it was until Whitney. Maybe you didn't I wouldn't say allot of people because Dolly did write it for the late Porter Wagoner. Whitney had to actually get Dolly's approval prior to releasing the song or wasn't allowed to record it. But either way Whitney made allot of money for Dolly with that song hence Everytime they play Whitney Houston version Dolly get royalties from it.

One thing about Kelly, she doesn’t skimp in her investment of her voice.She allows emotions. Her voice is gorgeous and I’m impressed. It takes a certain class to sing the way she does. I hope she remembers she’s a singer, most importantly. Hope she doesn’t neglect her gospel talent. She comes across as a sweet girl. Hope she stays that way.

This was simple, stripped down & to the point. Especially at the end, kelly kept it real simple. Whitney would stretch those moments, let the audience clap for her right before the big climax… she would do her vocal runs after vocal runs, she would wipe her whitney sweat off her face with her towels …. Kelly also has some balls by keeping it stripped down with piano and guitar. There was no full band to hide behind, theres no room for mistake or iffy off notes… her voice was front and center. That was ballsy. So many artists are scared of this song. The whitney version is one of the most well known one from the 90s, it is very difficult to not become a whitney lesser impersonator. Kelly was able to do it flawlessly to go in and out of both whitney and dolly’s versions plus putting her own spin. Job well done. If u want to hear kelly sang the whitney version, go watch thats my jam NBC with jimmy fallon when she battles ariana grande. She copied whitney note per note there and she did it in 1 breath. Either way kelly is the best live pop singer we have in this generation. Shes the real deal

I think his birth name was Sebastian Bierk, but his stage name and I imagine his now legal name is Sebastian Bach (no doubt on purpose lol, he's a very confident person and would no doubt see himself as a musical maestro lol) . Skid Row had some great ballads and if someone takes the time to listen to the likes of "18 and life" & "I remember you". Are great lyricist. But I think it's true of so many rock bands. Guns n Roses with "November Rain" or "Don't Cry", Metallica with "Nothing Else Matter", Meatloaf (OK, Jim Steinman was the writer, but Meatloaf brought it to life}, with "For Crying Out Loud". In my opinion, one of the greatest love songs ever, if you read the lyrics. Anyhow, I'm babbling. Hope you are well now. 😁

Dolly came on stage after that choked up and gave her massive kudos and then did it again on KC's show. She literally said Whitney would be smiling down from heaven (paraphrase). Fun fact, they told her after she agreed to the Dolly tribute what the song would be and Kelly said she was like, "sorry nope." I am glad she did it, I was there, and live was just so intense and magical. It's my favorite cover ever of this song (Dolly originates, Whitney claimed it).

I wish that Linda Ronstadt's rendition of this song would not be skipped over or left out. She was the first I heard sing it and didnt know anyone else had ever sung it at that time. I held others to her high standard until I realised that so many other people have sung this song. I now havent heard a version I didnt like. Yes Kelly is amazing!

It's very clear that you know what you're talking about. When there was that tiny crack in her voice, it made the performance sound so much more real than if it had been completely perfect. She's singing about heartbreak, so of course that made it so much more realistic.

At this point what can you say? As usual she makes me proud to have voted for her when she was on American Idol, a win that was extremely deserved. It was probably the only vote I ever cast where I got what I wanted out of it! 😂 Between her longevity and how she just keeps getting better and better, I couldn’t have really asked for more. She herself has always said that being emotional at times in a song is more important than being perfect. I can cut her some slack in that department, just as you did. She was actually scared to do this song. She had the task of singing it like Dolly since it was her song that she wrote and her tribute night, then incorporating Whitney AND try to make it her own. I think it was a good combination of the three options. Great reaction, hope you’re feeling better! 🤍🕊🤍

Kelly said they asked her to do the tribute so she says “yes I love Dolly Parton!”, they say “ok cool, it’s I Will Always Love You” and she said “I’m sorry?! Um .. no!”. She decided to do it anyway but after it was over she said she slept really well lmao. Kelly doesn’t usually get nervous singing unless it’s something really important.. like singing for the Pope, singing at a Presidential Inauguration, national anthem at the Super Bowl, singing “I Will Always Love You” for a Dolly tribute lol. She tries not to make it super obvious. You called it right though!

Dolly wrote an incredible song. I will have to look up if she wrote both the music and lyrics. It is one of the best songs ever.

I think she composed most of her melodies too ☺️ And if I remember correctly, she wrote this one and Jolene on the same day. Both turned classics. She’s really an amazing songwriter.

She did amazing. But she actually did the Whitney Houston cover. Everyone knows dolly parton sang and wrote the song but alot of people think this song belongs to Whitney and Kelly here was doing the Whitney cover.

She did, and that is the part where she destroys it. Destroy can be used in a positive sense, like «slayed» or «killed», which is the case for this title.

Whitney Houston's version want based on Dolly Parton's but in Linda Ronstadt's cover of 1975. She was the first to cover it after Dolly refused to sell the song to Elvis Presley since she knew it was a great song. I honestly have never liked any other cover besides therm two.

Whitney Houston's version is a cover of Dolly Parton's original song, so it's definitely "based on" it, regardless of whether Whitney additionally got inspired by someone else's cover or not :)

I was about to get “upset” because of the title. Such clickbait. Haha. I loved this cover. I liked she stayed close to Dolly’s and only adding a little of Whitney’s because it was a Dolly tribute not a Whitney one. It was great.

Glad I didn’t upset you after all :) I’d say it’s an ambiguous title rather than clickbait as «destroy» can be used as a positive, which it definitely is in Kelly’s case. I knew my subscribers would know what it meant. And I agree it was a great way to pay tribute to Dolly while also hinting at Whitney’s version.

No, it’s not written by Willie Nelson if that’s what you’re saying. It’s written by Dolly Parton. You might be thinking of «always on my mind» - Willie Nelson’s most famous song.

I think the lyrics are written in such a smart way that it doesn't have to be about Dolly saying goodbye to her boss/business partner, but is allowing it to be interpreted as a goodbye-song or breakup song for both non-romantic and romantic relationships.
