A great arrangement of Brazil done by Tom Garling and Chip McNeill for Maynard Ferguson. What I like to do is make a few changes to feature my musicians. One of the great piano players I know Richard Drexler, is starting the chart by himself. My lead trumpet player David Howe is doing the melody line on this chart.The soloist in order are Tom Ellison on tenor sax,Joe Longardner on alto sax,Tom Parmerter on trumpet and Richard Drexler on piano. I`m always looking for new arrangements for my Big Band to play.This one has a great feel to it,plus the fact my band was into this style of playing.I always like to try differnt things with my Big Band. Thanks for your comment.

On this song,I didn`t have a drum chart. I just used the 1st trumpet chart as a way of knowing where the kicks are and this helped me out with playing this song. But the most important part is to have a feel for playing this type of music. I know of drummers who can read a drum chart,but they have no feel for the music they are playing.So I would first make sure you can play in this latin feel,before trying to read a chart. @armandolevano Thanks for your comment about my Big Band. I agree with you about the soloist. I always try to add more soloist in these wonderful charts to showcase the musicians in my band. Playing in a Big Band,you need musicians who can read these difficult charts, plus be able to solo in your own style that makes the chart exciting to hear. I`m doing my best to keep the artform of Big Band Jazz alive .

I agree with you 100%. I always like to do a few things different when I play a chart like this. So I told Richard to play an intro for this arrangement and do whatever comes to mind. This was the perfect intro for this chart and Richard Drexler again gave me what I wanted.

As you know Kirk,all the big name Big Bands are no longer with us except for a few ghost bands playing today. It`s so hard to book a full Big Band since first it`s hard to find a place that wants a full Big Band, and then they may not have the budget for one. But I keep on trying to have a Big Band in this day and age and want to keep this great American music alive today.I just did a concert with my full Big Band for the Sarasota Jazz Festival so I will be posting that soon. Only these jazz festivals show an interest in the music I want to play,so I know the days of booking a lot of concerts for my size Big Band will be very limited. But I will do my best to keep the sound of a modern Big Band alive today so for the few people who love this sound, I hope to do more concerts.

The pattern I`m playing on the bell of the cymbal is call a Cascara latin beat.This is a afro-cuban rhythm which was used by the timbale player who used the shell of the drum to beat out this cascara beat. I learned these and so many other latin rhythms from this book"Afro-Cuban Rhythms For Drumset" by Frank Malabe. He writes out all the patterns you need to know to play real latin beats with a drumset. So I use this book for many of my latin parts that I play.

Thanks for that comment! What is the pattern that you play on the ride cymbal? Thats the part which I can never figure out in this piece.

I still don't get the twin16 floor tom setup. I put a 14 tom on a snare stand to my right and it feels and sounds better than a less responsive floortom.

For me John,I like the big open warm sound out of these Slingerland 16 x16 inch maple floor toms. Both top heads of the floor toms are tension medium tight,but the bottom head of the first floor tom is tension at a medium level.the 2nd floor tom the bottom head is tension very loose to get that lower pitch. But both floor toms are very responsive and I get a good bonce on the top head since it has a medium tension to them.Nothing wrong with your set-up since it works great for your type of playing.

KenLoomer Great, I love what you have done with that BigBand. I hope to jam with my local big band someday a 16 piece Black Magic Orchestra in Galway,Ireland. Sadly I will never get to see Joe Morello or Buddy live but I would love to catch you playing. I think floortoms would tune and hold tune better if they had 10 tuning rods on heads but changing head would be a pita! Best regards.

Wonderful John you have a Big Band in Galway ,Ireland that you can play with. As one of the rare drummers today wiling to do the work of having a modern Big Band today, this is only possible because I have musicians who believe in what I`m trying to do and want to play the charts that I have in my Big Band. Living here in the America I got to see Buddy Rich,Louie Bellson,Joe Morello,Elvin Jones,and so many other great drummers live. I have learned from all of them. My dream has come true for me to have my own Big Band and playing the music I love. All my best to you John in your playing.

Hey there Ken, i love your band!!! Its amazing! I just wanted to know if I could by any chance get the drum sheet for what you played on the drums in this video. I have tried to play this song for a long time but Latin Jazz isnt one of my greatest genres. Thanks alot! I appreciate it!!! P.S. Keep up the good work!
