The song is a revenge song. In Kendricks Song "sing about me" his friend is killed. In this song he gets revenge by having sex with the killers girl. The first two verses are about having sex with her, and how she uses the sex to get over the pain of her lover being in prison for life. Kendrick uses his influence as a famous rapper to lay with her. In the 3rd verve he talks about prison walls. And it's revealed the woman is the baby daddy of the killer. And how much she misses him in prison. Until Kendrick comes back around to comfort her.

Ive been listening to this album for about a year and a half. today when i was listening to this song on spotify i learned that the song is actually about him sleeping with a woman, who is an ex lover to a man who killed his best friend years ago. The man is serving life in prison. The first verse is about him sleeping with the ex lover, then the verse where he gets so engulfed, is him expressing how he was fucking the chick out of revenge. In the last verse theres a part where he is saying that he hopes the guy that killed his friend listens to this song and the song "sing about me" from GKMD. (which the first verse in "sing about me", is about his friend that was killed, told from the deceased older brothers perspective.) i love this song even more after learning this.

i used to not like kendrick cause i never found interest in him but after listening to TPAB a couple times, it finally hit me why everyone praises him. He's gradually grown to be one of my fav rappers, he's an absolute genuis

As a kid I only liked Kendrick for his songs like “Swimming pools” for the beat and feel good vibes but now that I’m an adult I appreciate how this man can combine such literacy and culture into real world problems that you can listen to in almost any mood. Truly deserved the Pulitzer what a Legend
I'm an older white dude. My favorite band, Bent Knee, told me that they loved To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick. It's become my favorite album. It's so transcendent to me.

So far, Kendrick is the only rapper (maybe even artist) that can make a live version of his songs sound just as good as, if not better than, those songs on his albums. Idk I caught this back during GKMC era when he did Poetic Justice on SNL, shit was a beautiful performance. Then he performed "i", he really put heart into that, especially with the Momma verse. And he's showing that heart again in this performance. Ain't no one on this man's level of artistry today.
To Pimp A Butterfly, is honestly, one of, if not thee greatest album of all time, not just rap, not just jazz, this is simply just one of the greatest compositions you'll ever hear. Got me crying and shi.

UbahGames Might I ask how? because you don't have to deal with complexion issues, you aren't being treated like you're worthless based on your skin, you aren't being called racial slurs on a regular basis, you don't have to deal with police brutality, you don't have to deal with racial profiling, you probably have a father and you probably don't know that many incarcerated people. Plus i doubt your dealing with the problems that come fame. I'm sure theres many other things you took from the album but i can't imagine it being as good without the relatablity aspect, the subject matter might even be uncomfortable.
I remembered when To Pimp A Butterfly came out, I went and downloaded it. To this day, I still listen to the album and think of what he is really saying. Respect him as an artist and another positive influence in today's society. Shoot, even state of Cali says he's positive.
