I think the production is too jazzy, funky, and laid back for some folks. Blacker the Berry is the only "Banger", and I think musically some people just can't get with the production. Crazy thing about it; Section#80 was very jazzy too, and when I first heard it, I had to get used to it. Glad I didn't give up quick. Because its now one of my favorite albums.....period. We will see if TPAB has the same effect...

Catherine Nealon Yep he always has. White racists will take songs like "blacker the berry" to say how hypocritical blacks are. Black racists will take songs like "for free" to do the same to white people. Kendrick is one of the few nuanced artists who will preach a message which does not belong to some collectivist movement, rather it's his well thought out opinion.

No one seems to mention WHY Kendrick chose Pac to appear on the album in the first place. 2Pac was the last major black artist to implement and push social awareness and change in an extraordinary way. Kendrick mentioned he had a dream when he was younger that Pac came to him and said, "DON'T LET MY MUSIC DIE." Kendrick wouldn't be writing music if it wasn't for the inspiration. Also TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY seems to be inspired by Pac's poem THE ROSE THAT GREW FROM CONCRETE.

this album has a special place in my heart. it almost reads like a confessional, as if he was making good on his statement of righting his wrongs by writing them for real from poetic justice. this album is a mirror that starts pointed at kendrick allowing you a look into his life on a deeply personal level that he slowly turns in your direction forcing you to reflect on your current situation. it is unrelenting, unapologetic and highly ambitious. I didn't love it the first time I listened to it, I couldn't get into the sound, it was really hard to approach and a bit cluttered. I was really down one day and decided to play it on a whim and it crushed me. it also saved me, I have used it as a tool to reevaluate a lot of things, kendrick has done the world a service with this album.

I agreed with Fee about the first time listening to the album. When I heard Wesley's Theory, I was about to cry. I hated it so much. Keep in mind, I have no knowledge about what this whole album was about, I didn't know what TPAB meant, I was just hoping for an album just as good as GKMC. Shit didn't really click for me until "u" played and I started the entire album from the beginning again. Kendrick is a genius and I'm so glad I understood and ended up enjoying the whole concept.

+M U V A H M A Y A I felt the same way as you. I'm a guy from a 3rd world country who doesn't know shit about hiphop. The only thing that reaches our country are pop music. So we don't really hear conscious albums like this. At first what I liked was "i" and "king kunta", cause it's probably the most banger TPAB has. But after a few listens, the other songs started to grow on me, and my focus would jump from one song to another. I started loving "wesley's theory", "u", "you ain't gotta lie", "blacker the berry" and so on. TPAB is not really "mainstream" material. What I appreciate about it is how Kendrick still did it even if he still isn't that big. Most rappers/artists would continue releasing "pop" music until they get really big, and then when they get so big, that's when they start to have the artistic freedom to do what they want(even though most of them still don't get out of the comfort of the bubble that is "pop" music).

This album is the best hip hop album I've ever heard. Period. I love the way that Kendrick tells the poem that the album is really based on at the end of the album, allowing you to realize that the album is about his struggles, experiences, and feelings as he transitions from a young man in Compton who is finally being heard by many people (the caterpillar in the poem) to a multi million dollar hip hop artist (the butterfly in the poem). This album is so well thought out and is truly an artistic masterpiece. Well done Kendrick.

Kendrick is one of the greatest story tellers in hip hop history. When u listen to GKMC you can picture what's happening. When you hear songs like How Much A Dollar Cost, you see the story unfold in your head. When you hear DUCKWORTH you can see the situation unfolding. He's up there with Big and Nas and 3k with that story telling ability and he has yet to put out a wack project. Maybe TPAB didn't appeal to you, but you can't deny it's poetic creativity. Kendrick will go down as one of the greatest artists ever in music if he keeps on his streak of amazing art. And there really is no argument unless you're a troll or close minded person. He's the only current artist in any genre I can say this about.

He talks about love, equality, God, and temptations. "I mix black soul with the trap music, black soul with some rock and roll-" Kendrick Lamar, Black Friday and he straight up said what his whole career is and who he is. Kendrick Lamar is one of the GOATS.

Please Read: FAN-BOYING IS MAKING IT HARD TO ENJOY THE MUSIC OF OTHER ARTISTS To J.Cole fans: Kendrick and J.Cole are bros, they are trying to push the genre forward, it's ok to think one is better but to slander the other is unnecessary. Joey Bada$$ fans: Joey and Kendrick both respect each other and again are trying to move hip hop forward. You have to realize that K Dot was once a 20 year MC who was really dope, but there were more popular rappers that he was better than. He and his fans didn't bitch about it, he just kept making better mixtapes until he got noticed. Joey has all time great potential. Logic fans: Read above paragraph. Lupe fans: Lupe dropped a dope project, but you have to remember the spotlight isn't on him as much as it used to be and he's acknowledged this. He deserves At LEAST a Grammy Nomination. Drake Fans: Kendrick will never be able to sing like Drake. Kendrick will never have as many hits as Drake. Drake has not shown the ability to make concept albums like Kendrick, K Dot is the better lyricist, and would murder Drake in a rap battle. What is the debate about? It's clearly just preference.

However, the album has many many other qualities that are applied to others regardless of race. if you are poor you can relate to this album more than most. and the list goes on its not just race. To add on, true art is open to many interpretations. you could take each song so many different ways i wont even get into examples. bottem line, this album is needed in this day and age, i think it should be required for every american to listen, simply dope

Great review. I feel bad that you guys get so much hate for taking time to actually listen to an album. Do people realize that this is their FREE TIME!!!! These guys don't get paid to review albums! Anyway, I'm with Myke on this one. I really wasn't sonically feeling the same songs he mentioned. The message within the whole album is great though. I loved "How Much A Dollar Cost" Keep it up guys. Can't wait for the next review.

I'm disappointed with this review, not because myke didn't like it, that is his opinion to each's own. But to me it's Cuz of the energy. No one had any energy for this review. They all seemed kinda out of it and almost like they ain't even wanna be there. Like compare this to their RTJ2 or even GKMC review they were so hyped. Eh I was expecting more no one was excited to talk about it TPAB.

Well think about it they knew they were going to review it and they keep telling the people they would. At the point of the recording the "fans" had been constantly annoying them with questions of when they would as well as insulting them for not putting out the review immediately. And the "fans" have been doing this for awhile so it is only natural that they not be so enthusiastic because they were annoyed constantly prior to the recording.

GeorgetheGreat1231 The Kendrick stans annoyed the fuck out of them prior to the review, which killed their enthusiasm for the review. It's pretty obvious to tell, especially when you see the very beginning of the video.

for me, this is the best album ever made. I personally enjoy other albums more, but on an artistic level nothing comes close in my opinion.
@featherycoffee1401
@featherycoffee1401 2 года назад
Honest question, If you enjoy other albums more, how come it still is your favourite? Can you even rank them on this "objective" scale that doesn't actually exist because art can never be truly objective Okay, so let's Hypothetically make an example, E MO TION, pretty basic pop album, not ambitious at all, lyrics are pretty generic, but if I enjoy it more than this grand influential concept album that makes a massive artistic statement, let's randomly pick OK Computer, Hugely influential, lauded by critics like nothing else and considered the best album ever made by many. But, if I enjoy E MO TION more than OK COMPUTER, shouldn't I have E MO TION as my favourite album of all time? Since everything is subjective, shouldn't enjoyability be the ultimate deciding factor and not this artistic merit that others don't even see? (For example, Scaruffi gave TPAB a 6.5, and that's less than 100 gecs and XXtentacion)

@@featherycoffee1401 No, its not my FAVORITE album of all time-- I consider it from an artistic standpoint the BEST album. You're entirely correct that my favorite album should be the one I enjoy the most. An example of what i mean in another medium is TV. I consider Avatar: The Last Airbender the BEST show I have ever seen, in terms of writing and depth and style, but there are other shows that I ENJOY more on a much more subjective level. My FAVORITE show is Red vs Blue, which is a deeply stupid show about halo characters, but as much as I enjoy it, it's nowhere close to ATLA or a hundred other shows in terms of art value.

@@featherycoffee1401exactly. That’s what I don’t understand. Ppl try to use this “objective” scale in music, when it’s purely subjective. It’s like when ppl say “I like GKMC more than TPAB, but TPAB is the better album”. Like dude, stop being so scared to have your own opinion

I’m with Myke..there’s all this pressure to like this album as though if you say you don’t that mean you didn’t get it. The concept is incredible and came together beautifully. But if you don’t like how certain songs vibe with you that’s just that. I also enjoyed Good Kid more than I vibe to this, as brilliant a piece of art it is.

I may be looking too deep into Kendrick's music but after Mortal Man went off my iPhone went into GKMC with the Sherane song & it trasnsitioned so perfectly. What if… TPAB was a prequel to GKMC & TPAB was was a backdrop to the events of GKMC. Musically and sonically I think it fits but any thoughts?

I listened to this album for the very first time about a month ago, I was totally blown away. It was nothing similar to anything I had ever listened to before. The jazz influences, the changing beats, the production on the whole was totally unique and, to me, unorthodox, yet amazing. And the superb skill shown by Kendrick is second to none, the versatility of his flows, his different tones of voice and his personal insights, all accompanied by a lyrically remarkable technique, showed and proved to me that all the hype was fully deserved. And by the end of the record I got the picture of the album being like a description of a black man, but still holding Kendrick's personal thoughts and insights towards himself and his community. And I caught all of this while being an outsider, as I live in Argentina and have never experienced anything remotely close to what Kendrick, and black people in general, have. A true masterpiece.

i just had a thought. when kendick is talking to pac at the end about the caterpiller morphing into a butter fly, hes metaphoricy describing pac. its like, at that moment, pac has just trasformed into a butterfly. thats why at the end, hes not there because he flew away.

Damn Myke I don't get why you were not over the moon with this album. You love the message but you're not a fan with some of it sonically, ok I get it. Maybe you're more of a music guy than an art guy because art is about the message. And that's why I'm over the moon with this album, that's why it's one of the best albums I've heard in my lifetime. Because it's one of the most powerful albums I've ever heard in my lifetime. Isn't that what this is all about, real change, making this world a better place for everyone. And Kendrick is out there doing it on this high, high level. This world is fucked up, our world is in desperate need for some love. And this album is a message of love wrapped up with so much style, with beautiful lyricism, with soul, with amazing energy, with depth etc. For me it's a 10/10

chrispbacon I feel you, bro. But art is not only about the message. It's also about the presentation. I can appreciate the message but not enjoy the presentation. Piss Christ is a prime example.

Myke C-Town Yeah you're absolutely right and I also get your perspective. It could be even more powerful, I agree. But a guy with his platform to be making music like this makes me so happy. This album gives me a feeling of hope, maybe that's why I'm in love with it.

Kendrick's album is a gift to the youth. It isn't for the rappers , but for the people out there who need artists like Tupac that inspired others. Every single time I hear a song on the radio they all claim to be the best . None of them are taking the time to create content. I feel like right now rappers are so worried about quantity rather than quality. I will much rather listen to a rapper that has a great message that I can relate and that my grand children can relate to, rather than the B.S being delivered by the great majority of rappers today. Why is that Tupac- Changes , is speaking on obesity , being in struggle, and us maybe not " being ready for a black president"... all these things that he spit almost 17 years ago still relates to my generation and those to come. Rappers are so focus on staying on top so they let record companies marginalized them, rather than doing something to create good content. I think is time for people to wake up from these deep sleep that songs like " I'm in love with the coco" has then in. It isn't always about party music, that only blinds people from what the lies ahead.

These Walls man... the whole song had so many meanings shown in just a few verses. The walls of a pained woman, the walls in his mind, the walls of the symbolic cocoon, and the walls of a prison. All at the same time.
