For my 348th review, I talk about Kendrick Lamar's astonishing leap with his biggest - and most intimate - album to date.
Best Songs: 'King Kunta', 'The Blacker The Berry', 'How Much A Dollar Cost' ft. James Fauntleroy & Ronald Isley, 'Mortal Man', 'For Free? (Interlude)', 'You Ain't Gotta Lie (Momma Said)', 'i'
Worst Song: 'u'
9/10

Imo I thought that "U" was a great song, it really brought the narrative together.
@JrSmyth
@JrSmyth 9 лет назад
Exactly, it was a side of Kendrick that I'm was not used to hearing and the beat switch up was dope as hell, I really can't understand why people are hating on this album.

Hopeton Smith I didn't like most of the album found some songs rather boring even though they had a message they're boring. Like complexion where the girl rapper was not that good, Institutionalized intro not that good, the music shift is great but the song is just boring. Then U is a terrible song, I mean that accent and that screaming like WTF?!? This is what eminem would be doing, both songs with the word momma on them were boring

Why is it that "u" is the least favorite song of the album, it really puts things together in my opinion
@Jerome-Boateng

Honestly it's an overrated song. Yeah it's good artistically and in the context of the album the song is good, but if I'm not listening to the full album I'll probably skip "u"
@marcobazan4187
@marcobazan4187 8 лет назад
+Jay Be Da Beast that doesn't mean it's overrated. A lot.of these songs are better when you are listening to the album, not many you can just pick out of no where. That's why I usually just listen to the whole thing, I love it (i understand why others wouldn't tho)

"U" was amazing and it really hit home with me. I feel this album is for everyone and everyone can learn, but it definitely was the narrative of black ppl seeking change in our mentality in America. His reflection of trying to get his message across but not being able to reach the people closest to him hit me hard. How can he get us to understand his message when he couldn't prevent his own sister from teenage pregnancy? Every song that I thought I hated after first listen became some of my favorites. Complexion was a quick "next song" instinct for me, but then I listened to the lyrics of a field slave of darker complexion trying to show his love for the house slave(light skin female) whose mind was being twisted because not only was her Master using her for sexual desires, he was pitting her against the other slaves, especially the darker ones. Best Hiphop album I've heard in my years of listening to hiphop. That may be blasphemous to most, but I really doubt that this essential message to black people could be orchestrated much better than what Kendrick did. It's so hard for most Hiphop artists to utilize their influence without sounding too preachy. I think Kendrick accomplished that feat with this amazing album.

Amazing album I believe this album is the "C" word but only time will tell its been a pleasure listening to this fantastic effort put upon by Kendrick I don't know where he goes from here but wherever he goes at least I know he has a strong foundation of music to stand on and this record showcases that from here all the way to mars. This album I believe will influence the likes of a Joey BadA$$, Rapsody, Big KRIT, J.Cole, and there I say TINK to push themselves as artist and us as individuals to think for ourselves. Thank you spectrum pulse for your reviews as always keep up the good work because I know your a busy dude.

For some reason, I feel Kendrick listened to B4.DA.$$ when he was in the studio. They have themes that intertwine a lot. It's a bunch of little things that could be coincidences, but at the same it could've been inspired. Save The Children, Belly Of The Beast... I don't know. Joey and Kendrick could deff collab on conscious track right now, I think. Joey's subject matter was on point in B4.DA.$$ fit the first half of the project.

tony tapia whoa whoa whoa Joey Steez's lyrics is a bit of a stretch because he sounds nothing like him and all the pro's have been into speaking upon enlightenment just like the rest of the Beastcoast your way off base and as far as Nas lyrics nice try Joey maybe my Favorite MC now but Nas is Nas no one can sound like him its a bit disrespectful to even mentioned him with Joey since he just got started
@seanstroman6087
@seanstroman6087 9 лет назад
tony tapia a sheep really that's where your going with this there's plagiarism involved within the Pro Era camp that would seem inauthentic to the public each one of the Pros have there own distinct sound from one another and as far as the teachings of "Knowledge of self" because that's what that is Issa Gold was the one that put Steez on ( proof is in the comment section "Herb shuttles" video where Issa responds. But the point is why are you dividing Joey and Steez They are were brothers you nor I have any right judge someone authenticity when it comes to rhyming there the artist at the end of the day. Now that I know where u stand imma delete your comments because negativity isn't allowed on my post which wasn't about this matter if your bitter about Steez then I'm sorry but he can't be brought back and he wouldn't want any divide within Fans of his and of Pro Era overall.

Of all the reviews I've watched regarding this album... THIS one...to ME...seems the most POTENT due to the critic's ability, knowledge, humbleness, patience and awareness to take himself out of the confines of comparing this to G.K.M.C. ..and Section 80...out of the confines of RACE being WHITE...to appreciate the MESSAGES, GROWTH, and RISKS this man took to NOT make a G.K.M.C. part two...to NOT go the COMMERCIAL ROUTE...to be vulnerable... HOPEFUL, yet HELPLESS, FEARFUL yet explicitly FEARLESS, PROUDLY BLACK yet accessible enough to communicate a perspective ANYONE who has STRUGGLED, been OPPRESSED, or ROSE ABOVE in a capitalistic dog eat dog society could relate to. And he does this with an understanding and vernacular so cohesively that his presentation of unraveling such an unconventional album that goes all over the place...yet simultaneously sequences itself so distinctly. .it forces you to listen more than ONCE to GET IT...that infuses instrumentation rooted in funk jazz and neo soul that doesn't allow for radio crossover hits like swing pools or poetic justice ...is honestly REFRESHING and shows just how intelligent and aware on many levels this guy is on interpreting not just music...but ART. GREAT REVIEW. KUDOS.

I feel like this album is going to be treated like OutKast's Aquemini. An ambitious album that experimented with the artist's style while still maintaining the integrity and the appeal of the artist. And GKMC is going to be treated like OutKast's ATLiens. An album that maintains what the artist builds and further builds and improves upon it, with long time fans coming in for what they expected from the artist and newcomers not feeling left out. I'm not saying one is better than the other, I'm just saying. I won't be surprised to see in the future, fans are heavily split between two of the best albums the artist had made.
@abel6297
@abel6297 9 лет назад
Daniel Cazcarro That's a bad bad comparison between both Especially since they both have different styles GKMC is more like Illmatic Then TPAB just stands on its own
@waves5249
@waves5249 9 лет назад
Morgan Freeman I was talking about how GKMC is similar to section .80, and TPAB being somewhat similar and vastly different from GKMC. Just like how ATLiens is is similar to southernplayalisticadillacmuzi, and Aquemini being somewhat similar and vastly different from ATLiens. This is just my opinion, though.
@vinay5807
@vinay5807 7 лет назад
Daniel Cazcarro i can see where ur coming from. Because at this point if there's any artist who can relate Kendrick's artistic progression to then its outkast. But the comparison is just baseless. Look at spcm and then listen to ATLiens (personal fav kast record). ATLiens is completely different. Its chilled out abstract mellow spacy and more vibier than spcm which for most of its part had a good chunk of inspiration from ghetto boys and even west coast g funk. On ATLiens they fuckin changed the game. They made something that South could've called theirs. On Aquemini they shifted the sound again more into soul vibes but this time with some really deep hard-hitting beats cause thats how andre progressed in his life. Now when u look at Kendricks disco change from s80 to gkmc is pretty easily understandable but on gkmc he didnt reinvent himself. he just stepped his album making quality more superior than his past record. Now TPAB is a real sound change. Jazz beats old funk vibes n all but again its kendricks poetry that matured so much on this album is what u can take from all of this. ATLiens v Aquemini is a choice because they're completely different than each other as standalone classics of hip hop. Whereas GKMC to TPAB is an change of an artist who left past his old ideologies to shape an album full of content for everyone to seek. im not downplaying gkmc here tho as i say it cause i like it more than tpab for some reasons. but the comparison nah. just not there.

Why do people dislike u so much? I think it's one of the top 5 songs on the album.

lyrics are incredible but the production for some isn't the best. I think it fits it perfectly but it's not exactly something you can just pick out of the album to listen to. thats probably why

TPAB will turn a classic in 14 years, and of course one of the greatest records of the decade. I enjoyed the album from start to finish (10/10) I've rated it my 37th favorite album of all time
@RyanHaile
@RyanHaile 8 лет назад
He literally calls it an instant classic, that exceeded his increadibly high expectations. He does have valid reasons to not quite being able to give it a 10, but he even says that it's an incredibly close to it.

Ryan Haile I know, but I understand it. In 14 years if he/we listen to it, we're finding out it's much better, but it have to grow on people.

I hate how the album is compared to GKMC, the sounds totally different. TPAB is a instrumentation. And in U you seemed to only focus on his voice, care to say anything on the lyrics?

I would assume he loved the lyrics. The worst song on this album to be sure, is a great song.

Can't believe you said u was the worst song, but you loved the story of the album. U is probably the most story-oriented song on the album and represents Kendrick's turning point. I thought it was incredibly deep and sad, and it was such a clever way to show how useless it is to be constantly putting yourself down.

Why does everyone sleep on Hood Politics? It's an absolute banger. The production is super interesting too. I love those spectral sounding keys and those disembodied background vocals. I love the use the Sufjan Stevens sample. It was a better use of that sample than Logic's recent use of it.
