My review of Compton MC Kendrick Lamar's important and politically charged album "To Pimp A Butterfly". Listeners will find that Kendrick takes himself in a new direction lyrically, musically, and really, in every way possible.

Next time you listen to Institutionalized, go into it with the thought that Snoop is just a narrator for the story Kendrick was telling us.. Not just "Snoop Dogg the rapper".. It helped me appreciate it a little more.

In my opinion this album is at it's lowest a 4.5/5. I think u have Run The Jewels 2 a 4.5 and this album (imo) is MUCH better than RTJ2. This is a classic, just an amazing body of work. No album in hip-hop is like this...
@Connorslamevideos
@Connorslamevideos 9 лет назад
But RTJ2 is definitely a great album. But I do agree about how no album in hip-hop is like this and imo the lowest for this album is a 5/5 and highest a 5/5 lol
@nightcobra4653
@nightcobra4653 8 лет назад
***** Its objectively better rtj2 was not innovative. TPAB has better lyricism, production... Obviously you can't see that since your knowledge to music is only limited to hip hop to understand how great the production actually is.

I really liked Snoop Dogg's contribution to Institutionalized. It sounded like he actually cared about music again.

If you're looking for trap beats and banger beats, then this album is not for you. Simple as that. It doesn't make it bad or not a classic. You just simply do not belong in the wide spectrum of people Kendrick was aiming to appeal to, the ones who want to feel the nostalgia in listening to old school beats mixed with soul and jazz.
@artvjon

Andrew Perez Excuse me, what? Are you talking to me? LOL I mentioned loving the instrumentals on this thing multiple times, there's no way you watched this whole review considering it's been live for 8 minutes, 6 at the time of your comment.

ok I know you loved this album, but I think your few critiques will go away once you listen to this a couple more times. I (since I have no life), have repeated this album 9 times now, and I am absolutely aw-struck with this album. and let me tell you, through every listen I enjoyed more. yes, through first listen I was like, "wha?" but that soon changed. please revisit this album a couple times, and tell me (or just say it in you top 10 of 2015) if it has grown on you.

Overall a thorough and enjoyable review. Good job covering the message, and attempting to dissect Kendrick's motivation/inspiration. I will say that, to me at least, none of the tracks seem like they could have been played on the radio in the 50's, especially considering all of the samples on the album come from the mid 70's or later. Overall the album has a heavy 70's sound, which is what I find really intriguing about the instrumentals being that I am a big fan of that era.

What i love about your review is that you enjoy GKMC more but still think TPAB is a fantastic record, most people who like good kid more, instantly trash butterfly, personally i prefer TPAB, but both are near perfect records and you can enjoy them both, Thanks for the review!

Great review! It's really hard to compare this record with GKMC. I personally felt like GKMC was a lot more relatable and the overall story was more intriguing. With that said, I really love this album as much as GKMC. It's so original and complex, The way the poem intertwines the different songs and somehow connects them all in the end is GENIUS.

Good review, I enjoy your discussions and your level of detail. I think your interpretations of a few of the songs are off, however. These Walls is a literal reference to vaginal walls. You Ain't Gotta Lie is about him going back to his old neighborhood after getting rich and famous, and not really feeling like he fits in anymore. Almost as if he had to fake certain mannerisms/mentalities to fit in.

This album has potential to be album of the year, it's that good. And this is coming from a person who isn't much of a hip-hop or jazz fan. Such a complex and well scripted album, it is difficult to review an album like this.

@jtruls

NOPE, he's perception and opinion on the album was totally different to fantano's, especially his view on a song like 'your walls' or 'momma said' it sounds like you're trying to find similarities....
@jeffemerson60

I have to give you prop's for taking time to dissect this one. It's a very tricky album to talk about my feeling's for this thing considering everything that is going on here with the racial topic's, genre-bending, and the best guest spot's I've ever heard on a rap record since 2001. All i'll say is good for Kendrick lamar who has put together this 5-star record, fuck therecordspins for making one of the worst album review's EVER (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QQvL6yliwEo.html), and I'm shocked that almost everyone has come together in agreement that this is a great record. Totally gonna track down a physical copy of this as soon as possible.
@artvjon
@artvjon 9 лет назад
Thanks dude. And honestly, I can't STAND therecordspins. I never liked him. He doesn't have an original style, and yeah, his review of the record was awful. Couldn't even make my way through the whole thing.
