Kenmore Progressive series canister vacuum. When the Wand Release button breaks, it's difficult to separate the wand from the handle. I give some tips on how I got the pieces apart and replaced the broken Wand Release button.

Thank you for making / posting this video! You really helped resolve an ongoing problem with this piece by just a tap!

Thanks for the comment and hopefully you'll get around to affecting the repair. No guarantees the pin may not jam in there, making it very difficult to get apart. Cheers.

You just saved me from $150 in replacement parts by literally hitting the back of my vacuum. Thank you!!

You saved my job today! Honestly I didn’t watch all the way through. The turn over and tap did it! I had it in the vice and was prying!! Nothing. Thanks

Thanks for the comment. I'm not sure how long the tap trick will work. If it jams you're back in the bind so you probably want to fix it sooner than later. Thanks again.

We too only had to watch the first portion of the video. Thank you so much! Have been struggling with this for ages. Weirdly enough if we turn it upside down like you suggested, it comes apart easily every time. If right side up it won't come apart at all.

Just a quick note to thank you for this video as it is exactly the issue I encountered today. In my case, the big assist was flipping the button to the bottom and tapping on the handle which allowed the wand release to retract and the wand could then be removed. Mine retracts normally when inverted (strange but true), so I won't yet do the replacement route as I don't have a good vacuum reapir parts supply locally. Thanks again for making this spot-on aid with all good observations...I am sure I will use it again in the future.

Much thanks for all this. Nowadays, with all our "disposable" appliances, these sort of things are our only hope. In fact, even devices I've dealt with where I had actual service documents don't often go into detail about the specific order things need to be done in, or warn you about problem areas. Speaking of which, sorry your handle had to be the sacrificial unit on those pry tabs, but if it's any consolation, you saved me and probably many others from breaking theirs while getting it apart. With as much consumer electronic crap as I've dealt with lately, I'm really starting to hate all this screwless "stretch the plastic apart without breaking it" disassembly. I feel like every time I need to go inside something I'm that much closer to the day where the tabs crack or whatever. On a positive note, my sister had been vacuum shopping and I was pushing her to get one like mine (HEPA 700 model). I ran into the newer 800 version with the crossover brush and all on Craigslist for a mere fifty dollars. I was expecting it to be in need of repair, but it looks like it was barely used, and the only problem I could find was that someone had cracked the wand release button, so I bought a 2-pack for ten dollars and followed your instructions. I hope all that junk stays available for a while, though cast metal or reinforced "upgraded" ones would be even better. I'm expecting to be on my own when anything breaks. I called Kenmore while mine was only a few months old, to inquire about the "check bag" indicator which has never lit, and was bounced around through a loop of phone numbers, each of which told me I'd need to call the next one until it rolled back to the first number (literally 2hrs and 15mins total). I finally gave up, which I guess was what they were shooting for. -Thanks Again!

Thanks for the comment. I do believe we have engineered obsolescence today which seems like a shame for appliances. I mean your new phone or TV will likely have features you'll appreciate, so getting a new one once in a while has an upside. However, I think many of us would be fine with a 20 year old dishwasher, vacuum, washing machine, etc, so you would think durability, longevity and serviceability would be appreciated. What the heck does a vacuum have to do other than suck up dirt and capture it in a bag? Thanks again.

Thanks for the video. Very Helpful. However, I had trouble lining up the vacuum slider control with the red piece handle control. There's a forgiving margin of error on the on/off switch but no margin for error on the slide control. I ended up snapping/breaking the vacuum slider control in half and now I need a new circuit board. Be careful out there!

Thanks for the heads up and warning others. I don't recall what happened on mine so I have to conclude it cooperated for me.

@@jazbuilding After buying a handle control circuit board and breaking the second slider control just as I did the first time, I bought a second one (56+shipping each -ouch). Not having any confidence that the third time is the charm, I gave up on being able to control the suction. I moved the slider control on the board to max suction (not all the way but close), and taped with painters tape the slider control on the handle back to minimum suction. That way the cradle (at a loss for a better term) for the suction control knob on the control circuit board would be out of the way and not touch the suction control board or the sliding knob when I replaced the handle piece. [Note-- if you feel ANY resistance when you start to snap the handle back in place - don't! The cradle is probably not lined up right.] I have working vacuum again at max suction but with no suction control. Hardly an elegant solution but then I'm the guy who couldn't line up the handle controls properly in the first place. Maybe there's a way to know that you have lined up the controls correctly but I didn't figure it out. Anyway, again, thanks for the video.

This is a great explanation by the way. But I can't seem to get the "crevice tool" off of the handle once it's stored there. Any idea?

Thanks for the comment. Mine just pulls off. It's not a great fastening system and we have to give it a reasonable yank. We've never had a problem with it being particularly sticky. Good luck.

Thanks for the video.One question on the tabs you broke under the Red Top Assembly. Did you break then using the method you described lifting from the back or did you pry on the sides breaking the tabs? 🙂
@jazbuilding
@jazbuilding Год назад
Thanks for the question. I don't really remember but believe I probably tried to pry the parts from the sided using my red spatula like tools. My guess is if you pry it up from the heel it may pop free without incident, but the red piece is pretty flexible, so it may be more tricky than it looks. The good news is that you don't need all four clips. Mine is fine with just 2, and luckily they're on opposite corners. But the tongue in front and screw in the back seem to be more than adequate.

@@jazbuilding It worked. The worst part I have was getting that power slider to line up. Took 3 tries. I'm surprised I didn't break anything. Thanks again for the video it helped.

One more thing The schematic part list shows a number for the button itself and another one for the spring. Did you reuse the old spring , replace both, or did your part include the spring
@jazbuilding
@jazbuilding Год назад
I re-used my original spring. It just pulls off and slips on the new piece. I did take mine apart before hand to be sure there weren't any issues. The supplier asked me if I needed the new spring which made me check in advance. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out. I gave this information a while back and here's what I said back then. I'm not sure how well it may apply today (but it should): My model is 116.21714111. I searched for the parts diagrams for this vacuum and found it on a couple sites (searspartsdirect.com and others). There are a few parts diagrams for this machine, and this part is on the Hose page. Mine is part number #KC13DDKNZMUH. I'd recommend you do the same search to be sure. I was fortunate a local vacuum repair shop had it in stock cheaper than what I found on the web and I was able to pick it up the same day. I hope this helps and good luck.

Finally!!! Someone has made and shared a video that shows the rest of us how to R&R this release button. I have been wrestling with trying to separate the wand from the handle portion,all while trying to figure out how to get inside to that little thing. I've already had the part number and waiting for this....Thank you very much. God bless you

Somehow, I accidentally shortened the wand and can not figure out how to extend it again.
@jazbuilding

Thanks for the comment. On mine, there's a gray button on the underside that needs to be pressed in order to extend or shorten the wand. Mine is spring loaded, and not very smooth but works well enough. Hope this helps.
