I think one of the most interesting things about Williams is that his whole act is, of course, playing up a stereotype in and of itself. Whats great about him is that he had the brains and ability to flash out from behind it and go off in totally different individual tangents, which is why people loved him and knew there was more to the man. The stereortype itself, and peoples expectations of him, depressed him greatly. But...on some level...I believe he needed to play out that role.

Poor Kenneth, he just seemed so busy trying to peform and have his audience love him, that he never managed to find love himself. There seemed so many conflicting emotions in him. Such an intelligent, talented man - but his own worst enemy.

The reason why Williams had so much religious guilt is because he cant forgive his father as the father was constantly still suppressing Kenneth every step of the way thus he had to be removed so Kenny could perform the theater fully from his heart reaching his fullest potential. His mom only gave him conditional love on the proviso he didn't do mucky things and therefore to gain his mothers approval he desperately needed to equalize the contempt for his father he became celibate as a sacrifice.

I've known about Joe Orton since I was a kid in the 80s because of Adam Ant. Seeing that enacted is horrific for me.

adrian andrew hayes Cheers. I've seen photos from the film somewhere. Alfred Molina is in it, I think. Yeah Prick Up Your Ears is a lyric from Adam and the Ants' The Magnificent Five.

you can watch it free on youtube. it is one of the best british films of the 1980's. it is similar to "sid and nancy" in theme and quality.also starring gary oldman.

I don't really think Williams would have approved of ANY representation of himself to be fair... Since writing that statement I would amend it slightly in that I don't think the directors view of Williams and the way the stories framed help that much either. I get the impression Sheen was told to do a lot more 'Williams mugging' to underscore the supposed 'tragedy' of his life than was necessary. I also realise I called Michael Sheen Martin Sheen! How embarrassing luvvie! Not bona at all!

I really don't know about Martin Sheen's performance as Williams...I had to watch up to this point before I could really make a judgement...he's good at doing the campy outrageous stuff but I really don't think he knows how to pull off the serious side of Williams. Even during the poignant praying scene its all undercut with flared nostrils and camp. Williams could do camp but it wasn't his only setting...he could be very serious sometimes and sound serious...traditionally well spoken even.

The only one's trolling here it's you! It was an observation. Kenneth Williams didn't strike as a happy man. He's quite lonely. complex and fucked up, despite his obvious...talents.
