@Stapleton42; Mitchell and Logan, this is another GREAT interview vlog with another of the great, essential racing car drivers of the previous generations that still developed with, worked, built their race cars, developed through the various racing circuits then into the larger circuits. Kenny mentions three very important major racing circuits, which he and his brothers along with others were involved in too. Only NASCAR remains and continues; USAC, ASA were essential too - declined and absorbed [as CART & NTT became one, and NHRA is geat, somehow IHRA still exists]. perhaps the decline and absorption of ASA & USAC also significantly affected the Lake Hill Speedway and others too and led to their demise and closure ? We can see other raceways-tracks currently closing too ... why ? As for the main principles which Kenny conveys and Mark Martin along with the others You have interviewed, and met, [Darrell Waltrip] including the mechanics and Rockingham Raceway caretaker along with his description of Roger Penske have basic commonalities. Among them are proper treatment of people, individuals, appreciation, 'hard work', growing, development .. all is a process, development, etc. The essence of 'hard work' is within what is famous, though rarely quoted and known, anymore: Calvin Coolidge: "Press On" [the keys are Persistence & Determination] "Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘press on’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” Also, having clear goals. Then develop a path, plan, method, access those with information, knowledge, guidance. There are actually NONE which are 'Self-Made'. It is a common fallacy, falsehood, pretense, misconception, false portrayal, narrative, claims, label and title. All The Best and Much Success in Your Quest, Health and Well Being. Sincerely

@Stapleton42; Mitchell and Logan, These basics were given, taught, educated and guided me by individual which developed into becoming 'Wealthy' - some were actually 'poor' or similar with what Kenny describes [lower, basic, working, middle class], 'multi-millionaires' (from the 1970's-1980's onward, increasing). these ideas, concepts, principles still exist, prevail and are necessary today as they always have been. You can be individually developed, grow, and revived through these basics. There are few that promote, teach and educate them. Kenny, Michael, Russel [Rusty] Wallace, The Petty Family, Allison Family, AJ Foyt, Mears Family, Andretti Family, Roger Penske and his Team, Kenny Schrader, J, Johnson, etc. all are clear examples of these ideas, concepts, principles, though they may not be specifically aware of these basics, though were developed, taught within their lives to live according to them. Also, the slight difference between 'Rusty'Russell, Ken[ney] Schrader and Kenny Wallace are more focused upon the future and not sentimental about the past, comes form other aspects, not just the decade [am born in 1959, am not specifically 'sentimental' though have a wide, broad,view with depth of my entire life too]. Perhaps my view is affected by knowing and living these principles too. Also, another which Kenny conveys knowing that life is 'short' and 'born to die', which means life is limited. Kenny quotes Koby Briant" as saying knowing be aware, daily that We don't have time, proceed with urgency [or a sense of urgency]. Also that which he quotes from Harry Gant to stop and smell the roses. WE can and should 'smell the roses' along the way, each day. WE can and should 'smell the roses' each time, situation, in which we are challenged, which are opportunities. If we assess, evaluate, discern, analyze, etc. daily, at least to improve, grow, develop daily, this also includes seeing, being aware, observing, recognizing, appreciating the good aspects along with those that were not good, bad, need improvement, etc. If an individual has difficulty to see, be aware, observing and appreciating their own good, sometimes doing this with another, as Your partner, other-half, especially and complimenting the other, then also doing the same with Yourself becomes easier. Also, then setting aside time to be aware of, assess, evaluate, discern, analyze the self not only for critique, growth, improvement, also the good, positive, etc. attributes, aspects, abilities, capabilities, selections, choices, actions, etc. Each one needs, requires praise, appreciation, recognition, especially from those which are around and surround us, within Our most inner circle, home and 'other-half'. Just as Your 'other-half' requires Your appreciation, compliments, praise, etc., so too We need to give Our Self the same treatment. These aspects about awareness, recognition, observation, appreciation, praise, complements, positive, etc., also work together, is interrelated, interconnected, intertwined and affect each other, back and forth and spiral too. With each aspect form awareness through active appreciation, praise compliment, the more one does it with another the more one can do it with the self and the more one does it with the self, the more one can do it with another. Please remember and be aware that sincere praise and compliments are not flattery. As Dale Carnegie wrote that Flattery will get You nowhere, but sincere compliments [and praise] will get You everywhere [also one of the simplest forms of compliment is to call a person by their name - as he, Dale (a more famous, significant, important one, expert in interpersonal communications and relations) also wrote 'remember a man's [person's] name, it is the sweetest sound to everyone', each individual - this is clearly interconnected, interrelated, intertwined.] Dale Carnegie, also author of "How To Win Friends and Influence People" The Three C's : Never Criticize, Condemn or Complain [my positive transformation: Compliment, Condone, appreCiate, + reCognize, (+observe, aware, praise -which enable the previous too)] Six ways how to Win Friends Twelve ways How to Influence People [these 6 & 12 are also interrelated, interconnected, intertwined with the Three C's, and also manifestations too.] More precisely, accurately, exactly: Each moment of life is a Gift, Present, opportunity, challenge. There is a real life example which i heard from distinguished gentleman [You would not know] the follow actual occurrence he experienced when he visited a home with elderly residents. On old woman which few would interact with, he noticed, she seem to be speaking, almost mumbling in a low voice - which she repeated, over and over: "Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery Today is a Gift from HashAYM [The name - meaning The Creator, G-d/Almighty, Master of All] that is why it is called the Present." Thus, each day is a gift, and We should use it properly - not waste it. [similar to an advertisement, which was common during the 1970's "...A Mind is a terrible thing to waste" Rather this should be changed to "Every Life, Mind and Moment is precious; Use it properly. Don't Waste it." This can actually be applied to every moment. Thus, more so - Every Moment is precious and a gift. So, You are precious, each of You, and each moment of Your life, as each moment, situation, challenge, problem, are a gift, opportunity, and each individual too. Such, each should be treated accordingly. Thus You, Your 'other-half', and others are worthy for the positive C's. You do not know me [except for some previous lengthy comments, perhaps]. Nothing i have done or have been involved in, with or within has resulted in anything 'famous' or noteworthy, probably, for you, certainly not within Your environment, surroundings, community, neighborhood, life experiences, etc. Our only connection is via this channel. My background and combined 'nature' includes a basically positive view with highly developed self-critical, crticism [there are basis and reasons from home which add, are interrelated, interconnected, intertwined to and with this - which are within my individual, specific, arranged set of everything unique of and for me]. Thus, it was very common, normal and habitual for me to not only be self-critical, also negative, uncomplimentary, [violations of the Three C's], professing, confessing my negative, lacking [with the thinking and justification of 'realistic'], often verbally including harsh statements and verbal abuse, like "You idiot...", "How Stupid...", and others. When i began to be aware and realize how harmful and damaging this 'self-talk' is, it became clear, obvious, since certainly i would never say this to or about my friend. So, how could i do this to myself ? Thus, adjusted my self-view and self-talk, including the inner thoughts without the verbal abuse.Also, there is no need to condemn myself to remain with the aspects, attributes, etc. which are lacking, negative, etc. The more proper and actually realistic thinking, way, manner, method, etc., is to notice that which is lacking, needs improvement through proper assessment, evaluation, discernment, analysis, etc. and leave the negative, valuation out, aside except that which is useful, helpful, beneficial, positive, emphasize ability, capability, desire, willingness etc. to improve, change, etc., and that which raises Your self expectation, thus self-image, self-confidence. The additions of awareness, observance, recognition, to appreciation of Your little success, steps, achievements within the day, especially when confronted with difficulties, problems, challenges [which are opportunities] then self compliment, praise, etc. are aspects of 'smelling the roses along the way'. Also being aware, recognizing, having and improving the positive view, perspective, perception which includes know ing the process of challenge itself is good, beneficial and thus rewarding too.. If You want some excellent basics of proper, positive thinking that are simple my initial suggestions are "The Magic of Thinking Big" by David Schwartz and "The Ten Seeds of Greatness" by Dr. Dennis Waitely ["The Psychology of Winning", "Breakfast is For Champions" and all of his books and audio recordings - a former Blue Angels pilot, PhD Psychology, Scripps Institute, SD, CA, worked with returning POW's, Iran hostages, etc. US Olympic Team athletes, etc.]. My hope is that both of You, Mitchell and Logan will continue in Your efforts, projects, endeavours, etc. Also that what is contained in my [lengthy] comments are clear, helpful, useful beneficial, at least one thing perhaps. With these basics You will continue to grow through Your challenges, projects, situations, problems, opportunities, etc. and also gain more from and through those which You have met, interviewed, have developed connections with, etc. All The Best and Much Success in Your Quest, Health and Well Being. Hi Guys, I lived in the Harmony Hills subdivision just left of where Kenny's home place driveway is. I graduated from Fox High 1967 and and went to Vietnam but I remember seeing Rusty and Mike riding dirt bikes down our street and hearing the Wallace race cars fire up and come and go. I learned to drive on those same roads. I knew Kenny Schrader as a young guy also been to the Valley park welding shop. My Dad raced at lake hill speedway in the beginning of the track in the early 50s. Great to see the old home place and all the many more memories this interview brings back. Kenny is a down to earth guy who never let fame get to his head. He never forgot where he came from. He should be in the NASCAR hall of fame.

@Shawn Caldwell; Perhaps there are several aspects which are within Kenny, as his brothers and the others within their era which still remained from the prior. As Kenny stated explicitly, that they worked 'hard', actually built their race cars [see Mark Martin, Allison brothers-family, Petty family, Ernhart family (Kenny still said Dale, Jr. is slightly different - perhaps others of that generation too (Danica Patrick, etc.) - though their parents still required specific things, development, etc.). They always knew what they had, where they came from, were rooted, what it takes to grow, develop, pursue, and appreciate it and perhaps more importantly other people. Also, though there was much publicity with those of that generation, which developed, therre was not much 'fame and fortune' either. You see, what 'fortune' is there left ? Not wealth. Perhaps enough to live more comfortably than their life as children, and to choose to help others too. Also, Kenny and all of them have a good, proper, work ethic. this is clearly apparent with Mark Martin, Darrell Waltrip, The Pettys, Allisons, AJ Foyt, Mears', Andretti's and many others too. Do You know the 'famous' [perhaps not very well known and rarely mentioned] statements of Calvin Coolidge, especially that which is entitled: "Press On" [Persistence & Determination] What Kenny, Mark express along with the others within their lives, including the mechanics and others which Mitchel interviews, meets, exemplify these characteristics [also the Rockingham Raceway caretaker's description about Roger Penske, and other about Richard Childers, etc.] Sincerely

Kenny Wallace is salt of the Earth. The success he’s had in every division and series is almost impossible to believe. Knowing the roads he travelled to get there and the ways he “made it” is the stuff they write Hollywood screenplays about. What a great video! And by the way, knowing how Kenny helped Dale Earnhardt get that last victory at Talladega SuperSpeedway with that amazing aerodrafting push is almost “the icing on the (career) cake…” Thanks again. Just now watched this and after he said all that I couldn’t agree more with him. Pretty much all the racers that made nascar what it is took the hard road and had to work for what they had and the fans had such a connection to that. Fans were, for the most part, blue collar and nascar drivers at the time had that same upbringing and so fans appreciated that. Now you have a bunch of rich kids that get rides just because parents have money or they are poster boys for companies and so they have sponsorship. No personality at all.

Wow this was deep, I felt his pain as a poor kid who didn’t have shit but that did not stop me from building my own racecars from ground up with little to no money. I only won a few times at different tracks and with junkyard motors with 300000 miles on them. If I had any money left after paying the bills I would buy used parts but most of the time I would work on other peoples cars for used parts to build my cars. I would love to of had new tires there’s no telling how many more races I could have won if I had new tires or at least a rebuilt motor, I bought used tires from the rich drivers. I learned how to setup my cars so I could pass in corners because my engine would lose power and smoking. I enjoyed building all the racecars and winning in them because Other people would want to buy it because it was a winning car. I can’t remember how many racecars I have built for other people and myself probably around 30 cars. I finally hung it up in my late 20s. I am 40 now I have a 21yr son and 16yr son they both want to race but They’re going to have to work for what they want, I not going to make it easy for them but I will help anyway I can.

The one personality of NASCAR I absolutely miss the most. Watching herman on SPEED was the highlight of the speedweeks for sure, for me anyway. Herm has enough stories to fill 3 lifetimes and could definitely listen to him for days. These hometown tours are easily my favorite.

One of the most profound AND TRUE comments Kenny made in this video is @50:31,, "Listen, there's a sense of misery that is required to be successful." Those words ring true for EVERY SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS PERSON,, PERIOD. You have to experience failure, you have to get the sh*t kicked out of you (mostly financially), learn, rebuild and come back. Those tough times are what make you stronger, more driven to achieve the things in life you set out to accomplish. How can a person appreciate what they've achieved unless they have to fight for them? Life Lesson's are not read in a book nor are they learned from watching RU-vid, they're learned by being there, by losing and recovering. The loser lets that loss stop him or her, the WINNER stands up and fights for what they set out to accomplish otherwise it has no value.

What a great feel good story, I drag raced for 40 yrs. until we couldn't afford it any more. The story you made takes me back 70s & 80s when racing was fun and not work. When it became work it wasn't fun any more. Sure I enjoyed it but the racing became a business and turned into work and took most of the fun out of it. First racetrack I ever went to. Lake Hill Speedway, had to be mid 70's. Boy do I have memories of that track! The box of popcorn was the best. Used to sit in turn 3 at the end of the stands. First midget race I ever saw and they were quick!! Later in life, I was fortunate enough to go to NASCAR events with my dad and meet all of them, even went to their parents Russ and Judy's house on Lake Norman. I was there when Russ had a new lawnmower dropped off and I remember to this day the way their dad treated that delivery guy. I believe that's when I learned this, how you treat people in life you don't need tells a lot about a mans character. Thank you Kenny and all involved for this trek down memory lane. Go to youtube and watch the reunion from years ago while the track was sill there, kind of.

I fully understand his time stamps. I grew up in one place until I was 19, then I left home, went into the U.S.AIR FORCE for almost 23 years, then I retired, had property I bought 10 miles from when I left, built my home, and then I knew no one because everything changes, people change. Three different time stamps in my life. Now I’m 78, no one, very few know what I’m talking about. Thank you for this vlog I really appreciate it.

We had a saying growing up that rings just as true today as it did then about guys that had it far too easy and never came up the hard way and had everything handed to them. "No mileage, Not deserving!" Also knowing the value of a dollar between being poor and being wealthy creates a healthy respect for money 💰. Guys like herm have what I call balance or a "well rounded individual " . I could listen to him for hours because so much of what he says rings so true for me at 64. Thanks for getting this video 📹 out to the public. People need to hear these stories to understand the history . The past has huge value to learn from. Thanks again.

Quite the video. Always great to hear back round stories on successful people. Kenny like many of us that grew up in 50's and 60's went without,worked hard, sacrificed. Kenny thinks just like many of us old hardened baby boomers. Thanks you very much for this video.

I can relate. When I was growing up, my family didn't know where our next meal was coming from. Up until December, my paid so little, I had to decide between buying heating oil and fixing my car to pass inspection every winter. This past December, I almost doubled my base salary. I'm a red-blooded, steak-eating American man and I will unabashedly admit I openly wept for the entire second week of my new employment when I got home. Because I kept looking at that first paycheck. I won't get into numbers, but borderline considering selling my house and moving back in with my mother to my paycheck is "suffering" this month and I'm LITERALLY taking home 30% more than my previous baseline. I can't even describe the feeling of relief.

Great video as always man. Kenny's a good guy, met him a couple times and he always has time to talk to anyone. Thanks for taking time to do this. EDIT - He's right about putting things off until later because there's time. I worked 10+ hour days seven days a week for years stacking cash and buying projects. Never had time to spend money or work on my junk. I had big plans of retiring early and doing my thing. I got a warning 12yrs ago when I had a heart attack at 35. I didn't slow down, if anything I worked harder. I was gonna retire at 50. I had a stroke 2yrs ago at 45. Now I have all the time in the world but I'm disabled and can't do shit. I still work on the weekends but other than that I don't do anything anymore. Take time for yourself and don't put things off.

Mine was blood pressure, stress, and a bad diet. I only ate once a day and it was usually fast food. I was super active but everything together conspired to nearly kill me.

Guys this was a terrific video. Thanks for sharing. When I was young I couldn’t wait till Wide World Of Sports would come on TV. If I remember correctly it was on TV around 5PM Saturday and the would show little snippets of the races. I loved watching them. When I was stationed in Albany Georgia when the Daytona 500 weekend would come guys would pack up and head down to the race. Things were simple back then not like today. You wanted something you busted your ass for it. Today’s generation can’t put air in a tire or check the oil. My wife and I were die hard NASCAR fans up until they showed more commercials during the race than the race. They killed a once great sport. I was a big Mark Martin fan and my wife would put on a Matt Kenseth shirt and zone out for the entire race season. Thank to yourself and Logann you bring back the good times. Thank you 🏁🏁🏁🏁 Artie

I grew up at Lake Hill speedway sitting in the stands on Sunday nights. Kenny did a reunion at Lake Hill in Nov. 2007. It was one of greatest days of my life reliving the great days of racin at Lake Hill. The place was packed with people! I will never forget my hero Wib Spaulding sitting on a bench talking to fans. I want to mention this because that reunion would of never happen if not for Kenny Wallace. Thank you for doing this video.

Thanks for this...In the 90's my dad worked for Square D in Peru, Indiana and pushed his plant manager to get Kenny Wallace's car in our local circus parade...We built the float that would haul this Nascar in our garage... Kenny's car and the hauler would be kept in the Square D factory....I will never forget how proud he was as we traveled through the parade that day and they fired up the engine and revved it up for the crowd.... Thanks for that memory Kenny Wallace...!!!!

Another great video. I love how you just let whoever your interviewing tell their story instead of constantly interrupting them with other questions while they’re in the middle of trying to tell a story like some of the other RU-vidrs do. Another one that I think would be very interesting for you to interview would be Kenny Schrader. Especially with being kinda from the same area and his career kinda intertwined with the Wallace family and him and Mark Martin and the Wallace’s all had early ties to right here in Springfield Mo and the late great Larry Phillips. Thanks again for doing what you do and I’m glad you got Kenny to come out of his shell a little bit and not be so quiet and shy 😜

I am betting that Kyle Petty or The King would love to talk. Such huge history there and a huge part of my youth as I grew up watching them race. My father raced local circle track in the 70's and I still have one of his trophies.

I love watching this video, with him being home,he brings back so many memories, he's the same way as he was in highschool, down to earth fun as hell, he treated everyone the same,I sat next to him in art class, kept me smiling all the time he'd bring in pictures of the race,use to love listening to the stories of Rusty's races he went to, what you see is what you get, he used to love to talk and joke and laugh, sure do miss them days

That black Acura TL at timestamp 41:56 is what I traded my Yukon XL for and it's what I traded for my suburban. And I'm glad I got my suburban bevsuse we just got nailed with horrible snow and ice and my wife's sonata ain't going anywhere in this shit we have. And the road crews suck.
