A Kentucky man got the surprise of his life while digging in his field earlier this year: a cache of over 700 coins from the American Civil War era.
The “Great Kentucky Hoard” includes hundreds of U.S. gold pieces dating to between 1840 and 1863, in addition to a handful of silver coins. In a short video, the man who discovered the hoard - whose identity and specific location have not been revealed to the public - says, “This is the most insane thing ever: Those are all $1 gold coins, $20 gold coins, $10 gold coins,” as he aims his camera at the artifacts tumbling out of the dirt.

You can only pray that you find the value in life one day where money means nothing. I attended a funeral today. Not a thing was said about how much money the person made over their lifetime. They were remembered by the memories they left behind, which has more value than any piece of gold on earth. It was a slow, painful death. But she had her family by her side, and she died with a smile. It wasnt because of the money she had or the posessions in her home. It was because she had her faith, and her family by her side. If I could could chose between all the gold in the world, or my family by my side, It wouldnt take that long to make the choice.

@@davealmighty9638 _that argument is irrelevant to this find or the the comment you replied to. Anyone can be just as happy if they keep their mouth shut about a find on their property, or if they do not. Conversely, they can be miserable either way depending on the circumstances.

I agree with what you say.but as a stacker i would say that the point of saving that amout of gold and silver is not for the person saving it nor is the person that would receive after my death would even know it existed. And of course i would put in the will who and when they would get it in the first place. So they wouldnt even know they had riches coming to them in the first place :) they would only know the love i give them in life, then later they would se the care in which i had in mind for them financially later. A lot of the time these hoards were ment to be that but things happen and they get lost.

As an amateur treasure hunter for over 40 years I can tell you nothing is reported anymore. The word is out that the government can no longer be trusted. The archaeologist community has been brainwashed into thinking they own everything even on private property. Made the mistake once 30 years ago of happy reporting what we found to the archaeologist in Gainesville Florida. Trust me when I tell you we or anyone we know have not made that mistake again. I have two good friends that own large site prep companies. They both made that mistake and learned the hard way. The rule no is say nothing, tell no one and smash it into the ground and cover it up. Better that than be shut down for a year and go out of business. That's common practice now. Sad but true.

"Keep his mouth shut to commit tax evasion". You should not post on a public platform to encourage fraud. Why does everyone think its OK to openly post ways to con our society to a life style not earned. Our "government" is you and I. We drive on government roads. The "government" is us. I personally want well funded government roads to drive on. I personally want tax evading criminals arrested. 😇

Wound not the "government" Includes you and I. This is abusing our currency. This is equal to a check with someone's name on it. Lost money must be returned to the owner. If no owner can be found. It goes to all of us. You and I don't owe this person a pampering. We respect our currency. I don't want to be a slave to some noble who was born into money. This is not finding gold. This finding our currency. Equal to finding a check with someone's name on it. If a person has an expensive car in their driveway, they must be a doctor or lawyer or someone productive. A trade, and our currency is used for this trade. I think the story would be completely different if he found gold. But this is our currency, and our currency must have respect.

@@billd7453but "government" means the roads I drive on. So. We should love our selves. You have definition of words completely backwards. If our schools suck. Increase funding,. Increase taxes. Taxes are not a bad thing. Museum pieces like this are for public museums. Only a narcissist is a collector. You ever heard the saying, "one man's trash is another man's treasure". One man doesn't have narcissism and the other does. There is everything wrong and dackwards here. Because of the mental disorder of narcissism.

Good find, after doing research on gold found this, United States didn't have gold production until after 1848, and silver till 1858, so this means the gold and silver in the coins was supplied by the British Empire, to the 13 penal colonies, and one penal colony in Australia, the Convict Colony of Australia which dug (The Mine) or after 1882 known as Mount Morgan Gold mine which supplied and built the British Empire

That's completely untrue. "The Coinage Act of 1834 The official U.S. government price of gold remained consistent at $19.75 per troy ounce from 1792 until it was raised to $20.67 in 1834. In 1934, the price was raised to $35. In 1972, the price was increased to $38 and in 1973 it went up to $42.22. Congress reconciled the new value of gold with the passage of the Coinage Act of 1834 under the presidency of Andrew Jackson. A new regulation of weight and value of gold was adopted to bring the value of gold in sync with the marketplace and its relative value to silver. The act revised the ratio of gold to the dollar to the equivalent of $20.67 per ounce of gold, increasing the value of gold and increasing the ratio of silver-to-gold to about 16:1."

I wouldn’t have told a soul and the first thing I would have bought was a smelter. I’d rather ruin an artifact that’s potentially worth more than its weight in gold than have the government take it from me after finding it on my own damn property. F that!

I find it interesting the majority of these coins are one dollar coins. One dollar in 1850 had the same buying power as roughly $40 today. Much more useful for day-to-day transactions at the local general store than the $20 gold coin.
