Kenwood DP-2050 CD Player Repair - Electronic Repair

Here I show how I fix a faulty Kenwood DP-2050 CD player that does not read the disk properly. First I try cleaning the laser lens with a little alcohol but this was no the problem. The CD player makes a strange squeaking noise as the laser assembly moves. The source is found to be a dry bearing on the top of the drive motor. The application of a little light machine oil cures the squeak and now the CD player works again.

I also had skipping problems on my 32 year old Denon DCD-900 CD player. Just a few drops of electric shaver oil placed onto the spinning screw, and bingo, it was back to working perfectly again. This unit had a spinning screw attached to a motor that is sitting horizontally, rather than have the usual set of gears that are hooked up to a motor that is sitting vertically. This design is intended to be much quieter, but it does take longer to jump from track to track.

@@1nformatica Sometimes it can even be a design flaw. I had one DVD player that did not grab the DVD disc suffice enough. In turn the disc world be slipping as the motor RPM was shifting from the start-up zero to the proper disc read RPM. With this being the case, the player kept trying over and over to read the disc, each time starting again from zero RPM. Anyhow, a small modification was all that was needed to fix the problem.

Exzellent explaniert! I have a DP1050 which looks very similar to your Unit.The laserunit of my DP1050 seems to be defect. How can I exchange the unit?

My advice would be first to clean the laser lens carefully. Maybe also a little light machine oil on the laser guide rails. Often that will fix most problems as if the laser cannot read the disk it will "hunt" back and forward trying to focus. It is also possible that the laser is worn out if it has seen a lot of use. It is an inexpensive older model and not worth spending much time on. Also, I do not see the point really in sticking with what is now an obsolete format! I ripped all my CD's to the "FLAC" format and have them stored on a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device that I can stream wherever I like. Alternatively there are many units similar to yours listed on eBay and such, at that price point there is little to distinguish them. Thanks for watching, have a great day!

I've got a DP7050 that won't play track 1 on a new CD. I've tried the CD in a different player and it worked fine. Funny thiing is that if I jump to track 2 and then rewind (not jump) back to track 1, it will then play track 1, but that's a pain. Any thoughts on what the problem might would be welcome.
@1nformatica

Track one is the innermost track on the CD. Perhaps when loading the lens has to travel from the outside of the disk to the centre but when going from track 2 less distance. Maybe a little light machine oil on the mechanism. Good luck!!

I’ve got a Kenwood DP-r894 and it literally only plays when it wants to for certain CDs. But there are certain CDs it always plays. When it doesn’t want to work there’s a grinding clicking noise coming from laser motor. It does recognize the disc and how much tracks are on it it just very temperamental when it comes to pressing play. Please help.

There's treasure in trash for sure. I bet you use the little round neodymium magnets found in the laser assembly to space short batteries in a charger or to temporarily hold wires on 'em!!

Thanks. Great video! I have a Kenwood dp-950 CD player which takes several goes before the tray would finally stay closed and play the disc. Once starts playing then no problem. Any idea how it can be fixed? Thanks
@1nformatica
@1nformatica 4 года назад
Hi, there is normally a small "reed" switch which gets pressed by the tray when it is fully in. Maybe it is dirty? Can clean with some alcohol. Also the tray slide is driven by a small rubber belt which can get stretched and worn with age. Most times you can find a rubber band or "O" ring that will fit. Good luck!

I Have A Kenwood DP-5020 CD Player, Disk Tray will not stay closed with CD loaded,track will show 01, will not play & door will reopen Any Suggestions Ken Buck

Hi, I guess the laser is not sensing or reading the disk. If you are comfortable take the lid off and watch what happens when you load the disk. The disk should spin up briefly and the laser head move up and down as it tries to focus on the disk. I have fixed many faults like this by simply cleaning the laser lens. Usually you can get to the lens easily but you may need to remove the disk clamp mechanism. I use a little Isopropanol on a cotton bud. Don't be too aggressive! Good luck! Please consider subscribing if you have not done so already!

@@1nformatica I took the cover off and cleaned the lens but noticed that when the cd is loaded it does not spin at all. This unit was rarely used. Is it possible that the motor is shot? The last it was played was around July of this year. We did move but extra care was taken to move my stereo unit, turntable, receiver and cd player. Everything else has been operating fine. Suggestions?
@1nformatica
@1nformatica 3 года назад
@@janetbuck1689 It is rare for the motors to fail but they sometimes get stuck. Here in southern Spain the high temperatures can cause grease to dry out and "glue" the motor shaft. See if the motor spins freely and maybe apply some service spay (not WD40)! Also try to trace the wiring, the motor is started when the closing of the draw is sensed either by a micro switch or optical sensor. Good luck!

@@1nformatica Thanks for the info, cleaned the lens, got it working again. I believe it might have been in the CD loading system also after cleaning the lens, you had to tap the door to get it to close. Made some adjustments & bingo it started working. THANKS SO MUCH KEN & JANET

I have a similar unit with a similar problem. No squeak. But CD barely spins
@1nformatica
@1nformatica 4 года назад
When a disc is loaded it will spin and the laser should come on to detect the disc. If it does not "see"" the disc the CD will stop spinning and you get a message "no disc" or similar. This is usually because the laser lens is dirty or the laser has failed. First gently clean the lens with a cotton bud and some alcohol. You will probably need to remove the disc clamp to do this.

My one keeps skipping while playing... no problem reading disc's... It does get really hot... is it a overheating problem?
@1nformatica

Hi Tommy, these units consume very little power and should not get more than warm. Which part is getting hot? Please unplug from the power if you're going to look inside.

One suggestion: move the intro to the end of the video and instead a short teaser of contents only?
@1nformatica
@1nformatica 7 лет назад
The problem is that people almost never watch to the end of videos. This is also why I do not like the end screens because people won't see them. I know some will find it annoying but it's only 20 seconds and intended for folks that find the channel for the first time. I hope you will subscribe anyway!!
